Regime sees naval and air drills as sign of hostility as US urges Asian nations to enforce UN sanctions against North Korea

North Korea today threatened a “physical response” to planned military exercises by the US and South Korea this weekend, as tensions on the Korean peninsula dominated a regional security forum in Hanoi.
The regime did not specify what that response might be, but said it interpreted the launch on Sunday of four days of naval and air drills in the Sea of Japan as another sign of US “hostility”.

As it does every year, autumn has come to Hanoi, bringing with it a slightly cold climate and fading sunlight covering the capital city.
It’s the time when leaves fall on the street and milk flowers blossom in sweet aromas, both typical features in Hanoi.
There are hundreds of songs and poems written about Hanoi in autumn, which talk about the beauty of Hanoi and I agree with these poets. Between September and November is the best time to discover Vietnam, especially Hanoi.
Walking along the streets and lakes and you can enjoy breathing in the beautiful sweet flavor of Hoa Sua flower(Hoa Sua means Milk Flower in English) and the willow trees hanging low. Autumn turns Hanoi into a really romantic place. It affects the people, too. Lots of young couples walk together or sit down alongside the lakes to exchange their kisses.
The weather in Hanoi during autumn is cool, a little bit sunny with a nice breeze that makes everyone much more active after the long hot summer. Floods triggered by torrential rains in northern and central Vietnam have killed about 49 people, state media said on Sunday, 18 of them in the capital Hanoi hit by the worst flooding in more than two decades.
More flash floods were expected in the northern and central provinces later on Sunday and Monday, weather forecasters said.
"The flood situation remains very complicated," the national meteorology centre said in a flood report late on Sunday.
Floods on Hoang Long, Buoi and Ca rivers in northern Vietnam remained on "very high level," the government's storm and flood control committee said in the report.
State media said at least 18 people were killed by the floods in Hanoi, believed to be the heaviest to hit the capital since 1984. Among the dead were three children on their way to school.
National channel Vietnam Television quoted flood control officials as saying about 49 people had been killed and several remained missing in floods in the country's northern and central regions in the past week. Two students who dressed up as the TV character Borat are at the centre of a row in Vietnam.
The pair performed a dance act at a company party dressed as the spoof Kazakh journalist in his notoriously skimpy "mankini" swimming costume. They have now found themselves suspended from college for 12 months.
The incident, dubbed the "nude dance of FPT Arena students", has stirred up a storm on internet forums and also in the domestic media. The leading technology firm FPT owns the college where the two performers were studying design. In a statement, FPT Arena said the organisers of the party did not know about the act in advance, adding that two of the firm's executives had been sacked over the incident. Hanoi Cultural Inspectorate on Tuesday fined the college 4m dong ($240; £135) for a number of offences including "use of improper clothing".
A video clip posted on the internet showed the two youths dancing and wrestling each other to the tune of a famous revolutionary song. Both were dressed as the Borat character created by British comedian Sacha Baron Cohen. In the background, members of a choir were struggling to stifle their giggles.
The clip has since been taken off the internet, but images remain widely available on private blogs.
Newspapers deemed the display "obscene", saying it was against Vietnam's morality and tradition. Angry readers wrote in to call for punishment. "I cannot understand how they could do such an anti-cultural thing," said Nguyen Dinh Van from Hanoi, adding: "I cannot accept it." Yet some found the performance hilarious.
A Hanoi student, who wanted to stay anonymous, said: "They did the same act Halloween last year at their school and the audience liked it.
