Update | 5:03 p.m. The National Iranian American Council’s blog reports that “a trusted source who attended today’s silent rally at Baharestan Square” wrote to to them with an account of today’s events more like the one we heard from a reader of The Lede this morning — and quite unlike the account of the anonymous woman who spoke with CNN:
I was there from 5:15 to 7:30. It was very tense. Being out in Baharstan was an act of defiance. No one said anything, there were only a few chants coming from outside the square. Although the police were a lot nicer, the Basij continued to be brutal. No one was allowed to stand in one place, we had to keep on moving. The moment we stood in one place, they would break us up. I saw many people get blindfolded and arrested, however it wasn’t a massacre. I heard that someone was killed, however I didn’t see it.
NIAC’s blog also notes that an Iranian newspaper close to the country’s leadership has reported that the U.S. Congress has voted to take action against Iran. NIAC notes “Yesterday, the House Appropriations Committee voted to prohibit US Export-Import loans from helping companies involved in Iran’s petroleum industry.” According to NIAC, the Iranian newspaper Kayhan reported the news this way:
Representatives of the US congress, in support of Mir Hussein Mousavi and the hooligans, asked for sanctions on oil importations t

With orders now having been given to the Islamic Republic's security forces to use maximum force the demonstrators will have no choice but to get armed in order to defend themselves and their compatriots who are fighting for their basic rights - their human rights - which this terrorist and anti-Iranian regime has denied them since its inception 30 years ago.
Despite the bloodshed and violence the demonstrations keep growing larger as people find the courage to fight back against the people who are suppressing them and killing their compatriots.
Two of the notable slogans heard on the streets of Iran today are:
DEATH TO THE DICTATOR!
I WILL KILL WHOEVER KILLED MY BROTHER!

Are the Iranian Election Protests Another US Orchestrated 'Color Revolution'?
By Paul Craig Roberts
The claim is made that Ahmadinejad stole the election, because the outcome was declared too soon after the polls closed for all the votes to have been counted. However, Mousavi declared his victory several hours before the polls closed. This is classic CIA destabilization designed to discredit a contrary outcome.

Mir Hossein!" 6.40pm: Just after 10 pm in Iran, Saeed writes that the people are again shouting "Ya Hossein! Mir Hossein!" and "Allah-o-Akbar!" In the event that the divisive Ahmadinejad were to be dropped and Mousavi became president, his 25-year-long battle with Khamenei can be expected to resume in earnest. That is a strong reason for Khamenei to fight hard to keep him out. But while the warring cousins differ sharply on social issues, there may be more room for an accommodation than many suspect.Iran protests: live

I often hear that you care about Iranians; yet your apparent apathy towards Iran’s rich heritage expressed by your silence, one of the hardest arguments to refute, is incomprehensible. Surely the fate of Iran’s historical and cultural heritage, the Persepolis Artifacts which are in the balance and may be awarded to Jenny Rubin and other plaintiffs for damages attributed to Hamas bombs in Jerusalem, in defiance of all international laws, should boil your royal blood?
I write to you in the hope that in the absence of a blatant disregard for international law by your friends, you may use your connections to help salvage what rightfully belongs to Iran and Iranians. Many of the people you know are highly influential in Israel as well as in the United States, in particular some who attended a conference with you in June 2007 in Prague -“Democracy and Security” -- with organizers such as the Adelson Institute for Strategic Studies at the Likudist Shalem Center in Jerusalem.

A hand-made bomb exploded after evening prayers Saturday at a mosque in the southern Iranian city of Shiraz, and Iran's state-run television reported nine dead and 105 wounded.
The blast and subsequent fire happened about 6 p.m. in the men's section of the mosque while a cleric was addressing the worshippers, according to the Fars news agency.
The sermon denounced Bahai and Wahabi faiths, both of which are considered heresies by some Shiites.
The explosion blew out windows in several nearby houses, the official Islamic Republic News Agency reported. Buildings shook more than half a mile away, The Associated Press reported, citing local media accounts.A hand-made bomb exploded after evening prayers Saturday at a mosque in the southern... more
