Excerpt from this Arizona paper:
"all guns, all the time
GOP candidates are outdoing themselves trying to woo the gun lobby these days, particularly over in Congressional District 8. Republican hopefuls Andy Goss and Brian Miller have raffled off weapons to raise money. Jonathan Paton is boasting the support of Tucson attorney and gun-rights activist Sandy Froman. District 26 House candidate Terri Proud posed with a group of women holding firearms.
Jesse Kelly, meanwhile, doesn't seem to be bothered in the least by the Sarah Palin controversy earlier this year, when she released a list of targeted races in crosshairs, urging followers to "reload" and "aim" for Democrats. Critics said she was inciting violence.
He seems to be embracing his fellow tea partier's idea. Kelly's campaign event website has a stern-looking photo of the former Marine in military garb holding his weapon. It includes the headline: "Get on Target for Victory in November. Help remove Gabrielle Giffords from office. Shoot a fully automatic M16 with Jesse Kelly."
The event costs $50."

"Reload" and "aim" at Democrats? How the hell do you think some people who live in a gun culture are going to take such words?
Matters not your politics, this type of inciting is not indicative of what American politics should be about. And whether the shooter or shooters involved in the tragedy in Arizona yesterday in which a Federal judge and a child, repeat, A CHILD were murdered along with others as well as the attempted assasination of a US Congresswoman were part of any such organization or not, to say such inciting cannot send someone over the top to actually turning those words into action is naive at best. I am ashamed as an American to see where the political debates in this country have gone.Excerpt from this Arizona paper:

Major Nidal Hasan, accused of killing 13 people at Fort Hood Army base, has been described by former colleagues as "psychotic." As more details emerge about Hasan's troubled state, gun safety advocates are launching fresh attacks on a Senate bill they say would make it easier for mentally unstable veterans to buy firearms.
Sen. Richard Burr (R-N.C.) says his "Veterans 2nd Amendment Protection Act" will protect veterans' gun rights. But the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence calls it a "dangerous" proposal that could allow "over 100,000 mentally incapacitated or incompetent persons" to buy guns—people who would previously have been barred from doing so by the Veterans Administration (VA).

They say music is the universal language. If so, perhaps music is the one way to get across the urgency of what this planet and the species that inhabit it face if we do not pull together to take urgent action on climate change and pollution now.
Just a side comment: i really wish Current would work out the kinks here that keep pictures from showing on posts. They say music is the universal language. If so, perhaps music is the one way to get... more

The New York Times has an article that tells the unfortunate tale of Diane McLeod and her love affair with debt. She started out "debt free" when she got married, but after a divorce she'd managed to accrue $25,000 in credit card debt. Despite not having a down payment or any assets, Diane was given a $135,000 mortgage. Over the next few years, illness, underemployment, and shockingly irresponsible spending combined disastrously with the bank's willingness to refinance her loan as her home appreciated (for a fee, of course). 5 years later, Diane owes $237,000 on her mortgage. She's in foreclosure now, and a recent sheriff's auction of the home did not draw a single bidder. A similar house down the street recently sold for $84,000 less than she owes on her home.
Why are Americans so willing to do this to themselves? The article explains that as few as 40 years ago, we were a thrifty nation full of "savers," and that banks were focused on whether or not you could repay your loan and not the "fees" they could get from loans before they were sold to investors. We know that there were changes to the financial system. What happened to our values? The New York Times has an article that tells the unfortunate tale of Diane McLeod and... more

"Whole Body Imaging" machines are being added to additional airports after their initial testing in Phoenix, AZ. The machines are controversial because TSA agents will be able to see people without their clothes essentially. They are the x-ray glasses horny teens always hoped for. The TSA claims privacy advocates having nothing to worry about though, "At JFK, passengers sent to secondary screening will be given the option of a pat-down or a trip through the body imager. To protect the traveler's privacy, the screener who reviews the image is in a booth, unable to see the traveler, according to the TSA. The traveler's face is pixilated and the image is not stored, the TSA said."
