Mayor Richard Daley says he will not run for re-election in 2011, saying “It’s time for me, it’s time for Chicago to move on.” At a City Hall news conference that stunned the city, the mayor continued: “I have always known that people want you to work hard for them. Clearly, they won’t always agree with you. Obviously, they don’t like it when you make a mistake. But at all times, they expect you to lead, to make difficult decisions, rooted in what’s right for them. For 21 years, that’s what I’ve tried to do. But today, I am announcing that I will not seek a 7th term as mayor of the city of Chicago. Simply put, it’s time.”
Daley’s decision sets off a major power scramble, following more than 20 years of stifled political ambitions in city politics. Daley was first elected mayor in 1989 after his failed bid in 1983. The mayor won re-election every four years since then, always with little to no opposition. However, the mayor’s administration has been hit by an outbreak of summer violence, a weak economy and a high-profile failure to land the 2016 Olympics. Dissatisfaction abounds over Daley’s handling of the crime problem, his efforts to rein in government corruption and his backing of a controversial long-term parking meter system lease.
This piece includes a number of high-resolution color photographs, a slide show of the Daley political dynasty and the video of his announcement.

Roughly 250 people gathered outside City Hall in downtown Chicago this evening to protest the city's bid for the 2016 Olympic games. Protesters criticized Obama for traveling to Copenhagen to back the Chicago bid, and cited Mayor Daley's recent follies - like selling the city's parking meters to a privately-owned company - as evidence of the city's inability to host the games. Partially coordinated by the non-profit organization www.nogameschicago.org , the demonstration comes just days before the IOC announces its decision as to which candidate city wins the bid.
Although the Olympics will increase tourism, revenue, and job offerings in Chicago, protestors believe the games will not benefit the average Chicago citizen - stating they will uproot low-income families from their homes to make room for stadiums, pave over public parks, and ultimately add to the city's $300 million deficit.Roughly 250 people gathered outside City Hall in downtown Chicago this evening to... more

Welcome to Illinois politics, home of Lincoln, Stevenson, Dirksen, Daley, Obama…as well as a crapload of other, lesser figures who are often professional and cagey, but also often…uh...just crappy.
Sure, we may well be providing the US with its next President, but we also are to blame for the recent one-term Senatorial blips of Peter Fitzgerald and Carol Moseley Braun. And, there’s also worse – much worse...For example, of our state’s last eight Governors, three of them – Otto Kerner, Dan Walker, and George Ryan – have served time in prison. (And, quite frankly, the current Gov. Rod Blagojevich, seems more than a bit nervous about the various investigations and rumors swirling around his administration.)
So…to provide a current overview of the kings and queens, the wild-cards, and the flat-out jokers in Illinois politics, here’s the first of a two-part report – this posting focusing on the more internal-facing IL state politicians while part two looks at the external influencing political leaders from this state:
(Important Note: Keep in mind that WHEN Barack Obama is elected President, these are the men and women who will likely be selecting his Senatorial successor...in fact, I’d call it a solid 95% bet that one of the people listed in these two posts WILL BE chosen as the next US Senator from Illinois…)

Democratic nominee Senator Barack Obama was the keynote speaker at the luncheon for the US Conference of Mayors June 21st in Miami, FL. While the Mayors' issues and Obama's address were the issues and highlight of the day, there was a special group in attendance by invitation for whom the Senator's messages truly hit home. In the back of the luncheon hall was a gathering of high school students from Miami's Young Women's Preparatory Academy, the first single sex public school in the County.
While the Mayors listened intently to Obama's proposals to help their cities and towns with problems ranging from high energy costs brought on by Washington catering to Big Oil, to the effects of unchecked immigration, this attentive and polite group of young women focused on his comments related to issues they felt had a direct impact on them. Specifically, they were impressed with his dedication to education and commitment to expanding wireless access for all.
Isis Gottlieb-Guidance Counselor to the girls encouraged them to speak about what Obama's proposals meant to them. The girls said that his plans for helping schools and teachers suffering from budget shortfalls would have a direct impact on them. When schools are forced to reduce the number of textbooks to keep their buses on the road, education suffers. They also were most impressed with the Senator's focus on the Internet and wireless access. Many politicians today aren't of the "Tech Generation" and perhaps don't realize the potential of opportunities for learning and growth when wireless is more accessible. Senator Obama said that "surely the country that invented the Internet should be able to make access more widely available." He envisioned a time when all cities and towns would be able to offer wireless access to all schools and libraries as well as their communities.
Some highlights of Barack's speech included observations on how Washington has failed cities and towns when it comes to disaster relief, immigration problems, the effects of high energy costs on services and education and said that "neglect is not a policy. Communities should not be succeeding despite Washington but with a helping hand from Washington."
Obama added that while he respected and admired his opponent's service to his country, he would not be the partner to communities that is necessary going forward. He said McCain has different priorities than the average American. For example, he said, "McCain wants to give $2-trillion in tax breaks to big corporations and wealthy individuals at the same time that he opposes expanding funding to the COPS program and community development programs. That's just more of the same in Washington," he said.

After putting up with years of ongoing abuse from the city, Chicago's transit riders finally revolted against Mayor Daley and his decayed subway system. Packed trains were stranded under Chicago's Loop during rush hour for more than an hour on Tuesday. People were getting sick and throwing up from the lack of circulating fresh air. Finally, riders revolted en mass, ignoring transit workers' confused directions and pleas, abandoning the stalled trains and making a long and dangerous trudge through dark and dirty underground tunnels to the light of freedom. Some of them still remain hospitalized.
Photographs and videos are included. After putting up with years of ongoing abuse from the city, Chicago's transit... more
