President Bush and VP Cheney are put on notice to leave their shredders unplugged
WASHINGTON – Senate Democrats on the Intelligence and Judiciary Committees last week told the White House to preserve all records produced by the Bush administration and expressed "particular concerns" whether Vice President Dick Cheney's office will comply with the law.
"We believe it is vital the presidential and vice presidential documents belonging to the American people be preserved, including those related to key national security decisions in which the (office of the vice president) played an important role," the senators wrote in the Nov. 7 letter to White House lawyer Fred Fielding. The letter was obtained by The Associated Press.
"We have particular concerns ... regarding documents in the possession of the Office of the Vice President," the letter said. Citing ongoing litigation over the preservation of Cheney's records, the senators wrote: "the declarations filed in that case by the Office of the Vice President raise serious concerns about its interpretations of the (Presidential Records Act)."President Bush and VP Cheney are put on notice to leave their shredders unplugged... more

A Texas grand jury has charged US Vice-President Dick Cheney for "organised criminal activity" related to alleged abuse of private prison inmates.
The indictment says Mr Cheney - who has invested $85m (£56m) in a company that holds shares in for-profit prisons - conspired to block an investigation.
The indictment has not been seen by a judge, who could dismiss it.
Mr Cheney's spokeswoman declined to comment, saying his office had not yet received a copy of the charges.
The indictment was overseen by county District Attorney Juan Guerra, an outgoing prosecutor at the end of his term of office.
He cites the case of Gregorio De La Rosa, who died on 26 April, 2001 inside a private prison in Willacy County, Texas.
The grand jury in Willacy County, near the US-Mexico border, accuses Mr Cheney of committing "at least misdemeanour assaults" of inmates by allowing other inmates to assault them.
It said there was a "direct conflict of interest" because Mr Cheney had influence over federal contracts awarded to prison companies.
The three-page indictment also alleges that former US Attorney General Alberto Gonzales "used his position...to stop the investigations as to the wrong doings."
The grand jury wrote that it made its decision "with great sadness," but said they had no other choice but to indict Mr Cheney and Mr Gonzales "because we love our country."A Texas grand jury has charged US Vice-President Dick Cheney for "organised criminal... more

A Texas judge has set a Friday arraignment for Vice President Dick Cheney, former U.S. Attorney General Alberto Gonzales and others named in indictments accusing them of responsibility for prisoner abuse in a federal detention center.
Cheney, Gonzales and the others will not be arrested, and do not need to appear in person at the arraignment, Presiding Judge Manuel Banales said.
One indictment charges Cheney and Gonzales with engaging in organized criminal activity. It alleges that the men neglected federal prisoners and are responsible for assaults in the facilities.
The grand jury accused Cheney of a conflict of interest because of his influence over the county's federal immigrant detention center and his substantial holdings in the Vanguard Group, which invests in private prison companies.

Jeff Dunham is an American ventriloquist and stand-up comedian, Walter (Dunham’s main character) is a retired and grumpy old man with arms always crossed in discontent. Married 48 years, he has a brash, negative, and often sarcastic view on today’s world. He is a Vietnam War veteran and a former welder, and “doesn’t give a damn” about anyone; especially his own wife and certain audience members…. The “scientific consensus” that Al Gore and his fellow global warming alarmists rely upon to force radical changes in how Americans live and work is being unraveled by Mother Nature. In addition to the recent freak snowstorms in Malibu, New Orleans and Las Vegas, Arctic ice is expanding this year - not shrinking - and there were 115 record-low temperatures reported in the U.S. in October, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. Despite rising carbon dioxide levels, the Earth has actually been cooling – not warming – since 1998, when the warming trend peaked in conjunction with heightened sunspot activity. It appears that 2008, the National Climatic Data Center now says, will go down as the coldest year in a decade.
“For how many years must the planet cool before we begin to understand that the planet is not warming?” asked Dr. David Gee, chairman of the 2008 International Geological Congress’ science committee. That’s an excellent question for President-elect Barack Obama, who promised mandatory caps on carbon emissions and a new international global warming treaty. After meeting with Gore recently, Obama proclaimed: “The time for delay is over; the time for denial is over. We all believe what the scientist have been telling us for years.”
Which scientists? Does Obama believe more than 650 current and former members of the U.N. Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) who are now publicly questioning the non-scientist Gore’s major premise? Or Norwegian Nobel physicist Ivar Giaever, who declared himself a global warming skeptic, as did Dr. Joanne Simpson, the first woman in the world to receive a Ph.D. in meteorology? Or the scientists who point out that “100 percent” of the 20th century global warming signal comes from man-made “adjustments” made to a computer model at NASA’s Goddard Institute? The “scientific consensus” that Al Gore and his fellow global warming alarmists... more

In a recent press function, President Elect Barack Obama issued a stern warning to reporters in attendance about the possibilities of shoes being thrown at him. Tension were high among the press corps, as Secret Service Agents inspected all shoes being worn on the feet of the reporters in attendance.
These inspection were met with mild hostility, with one reporter from the Tupelo Mississippi Herald claiming, “Do they think we are in Iraq?”
The press conference concluded without incident, with Barack Obama taking questions. Strangely no questions about the conflict between Hamas and Israel being asked. In a recent press function, President Elect Barack Obama issued a stern warning to... more

Prosecute Cheney or Legalize Marijuana? Decide Today.
On December 15, Vice President Cheney admitted on national TV that he authorized torture, including waterboarding. That shocking confession makes Cheney a war criminal . But apart from Keith Olbermann and Rachel Maddow , the Corporate Media barely noticed.
Under the Geneva Conventions, the United States must prosecute Dick Cheney for war crimes. So we submitted this question to President-elect Obama at Change.gov:
"Will you appoint a Special Prosecutor - ideally Patrick Fitzgerald - to independently investigate the gravest crimes of the Bush Administration, including torture and warrantless wiretapping?"
-Bob Fertik, New York City
At the end of the first round on December 15, our Special Prosecutor question was #6 but Obama's team only answered the first five , including one on the legalization of marijuana.
The second round began on 12/30 and ends at midnight on 12/31. Once again, marijuana legalization is #1. We need your help to make our Special Prosecutor question #1!
1. Sign in at http://change.gov/openforquestions
2. Search for " Fitzgerald "
3. This will display several similar questions, so look carefully for "Bob Fertik"
4. Look right for the checkbox, mouseover it so it goes from white to dark, then click to cast your vote
As Ari Melber writes in The Nation,
With so few journalists directly asking the President-Elect about [torture and war crimes prosecution], it is up to the rest of us to put accountability and the rule of law on the agenda. Change.gov is a fine place to start.

Urge Eric Holder to Appoint a Special Prosecutor for Bush War Crimes
Last week three important Democrats - Rep. Jerrold Nadler , Sen. Carl Levin , and VP-elect Joe Biden - independently urged the Attorney General to investigate Dick Cheney's torture confession . A growing chorus of newspapers ( NY Times ) and legal scholars ( John Dean , Glenn Greenwald ) agrees.
Prosecution of those responsible for torture is not optional - it is required by our obligations under the Geneva Conventions .
So we've joined forces with buhdydharma and the Docudharma community to petition Obama's AG nominee, Eric Holder, to appoint a Special Prosecutor.
Holder replied after receiving a few hundred emails: " Enough folks. I hear you ." That's a start, but we've asked for a formal statement. And we're collecting additional signatures to deliver when Holder goes before the Senate for confirmation hearings in January.
Please sign and spread the word!

The above may seem like a bold statement, but I believe it’s true. The United States of America is operated and kept alive by the American people, not the politicians that rape, pillage, and spend our money and our most precious resource, America’s brave soldiers that fight these illegal wars. Many of our “volunteer military” are not in the fight because of patriotism - but to support their families and seek GI benefits that will allow them to attend college when they leave the armed services.
Our economy is already in ruins, food and gas are becoming luxuries to the poorest families in America, and the middle-class is disappearing faster than Bush’s approval ratings. Millions of us are facing foreclosure, while the oil companies post profits that are obscene - and still receive huge government subsidies. The average American is now becoming aware that Bush and Cheney are war criminals, yet Congress refuses to impeach them, even though there is a mountain of evidence that supports their immediate impeachment, indictment, and incarceration for breaking our own and international laws. Congress is worthless, and as bad as Bush’s ratings are, Congress rates worse, symptoms that the public has lost respect and hope that any of them will find the courage to do what’s right! The only thing left to stop the destruction of our country and another war is the people themselves - but first, they have to know what to do. As we stated over a year ago, its time that America’s premier alternative news sites, Blogs, and every individual on the Internet get busy and come together in solidarity to take back our country.
