Mere hours after Hurricane Gustav came ashore, the two women expressed sympathy and support for Louisianans bracing themselves for Gustav.
"America stands with you during this trying time," Cindy McCain, wife of the presumptive Republican presidential nominee Sen. John McCain, said.
John McCain Sunday asked Republican party officials to curtail the activities at the convention in St. Paul, Minnesota, out of concern for the victims of the storms and asked delegates to "put aside our political hats and put on our American hats" and help those hurt by the storm.
McCain's campaign manager Rick Davis emphasized Monday that all political activity will be suspended for the time being.

In an interview with George Stephanopoulos Cindy McCain states " You know, the experience that she comes from is what she’s done in government, and remember, Alaska is the closest part of our continent to Russia. It’s not as if she doesn’t understand what’s at stake here."
It doesn’t appear that Palin has ever even traveled to Russia, despite her state’s proximity. In fact, she didn’t even have a passport until 2007, when she visited troops stationed in Kuwait and Germany. She has also visited Ireland.

"It was in the late 1980s, after a series of miscarriages and giving birth to three children, that Cindy developed spinal problems and was prescribed painkillers after surgery. Her husband and family had no idea she was secretly taking pills stolen from a charity she had created called the American Voluntary Medical Team, which sent mobile surgical units to war zones. When federal agents began to investigate gaps in the charity’s records, Cindy telephoned her husband, a senator in Washington, and confessed.
She admitted at the time that the 1994 episode had “nearly destroyed both of us”. But she underwent treatment and attended meetings of Narcotics Anonymous as part of a deal with prosecutors who dropped charges.
Cindy recently admitted that she keeps a “grudge list”.
Cindy McCain, now 53, claims she has no interest in policy making - “I am not the legislator in this family. He is” - and that she intends to keep busy running her charities and her family’s company. As first lady, it is clear that she would play a key role. Acknowledging that McCain had made many enemies in Republican ranks, she added: “The only person my husband can trust is me.”

Michelle Obama gets the fashion nod from Project Runway judge Tim Gunn. “No contest, Michelle.”
He thinks Mrs. McCain needs a makeover, while Mrs. Obama shows class and American style. Gunn says he loves her approachable look.
On the other hand, he says Cindy McCain has a button-down look that makes her look duct taped. He then weighs in with this pithy observation that “Fashion is a metaphor for personality.”

Cindy McCain's half sister is planning on voting for Barack Obama, she tells Usmagazine.com.
"I'm not voting for McCain," Kathleen Hensley Portalski tells Us. "I have a different political standpoint.
"I'm voting for Obama," the Phoenix resident says. "I think his proposals to improve the country are more positive and I'm not a big war believer."
Portalski, 65, and the potential first lady, 54, have the same father: Jim Hensley, the founder of the beer distributor Hensley and Co. that Cindy McCain now chairs.
In an interview with NPR News' All Things Considered last week, Portalski said she felt "like a non-person" after Cindy McCain described herself as an "only child."

Last week, John McCain stepped into a pile of political pain when he couldn't remember how many homes his family owns. Part of what made this seemingly easy question so difficult for the Arizona senator is that, technically, he doesn't own any houses. All the McCain's properties -- between four and eight depending on how you count -- belong to his wealthy heiress second wife, from whom he keeps separate finances.
The Obama camp immediately attacked the McCain's spendthrift ways as out of touch with the typical American.
But it turns out Obama also has a family member whose financial situation would be difficult for the typical American to imagine. Barack's half-brother, 26-year old George Obama, lives in a Kenyan slum on less than a dollar a month. While John McCain has yet to comment on George Obama, the Texas GOP has been running a harsh ad which asks the question, "How can Barack Obama care for your family if he doesn't care for his own?"Last week, John McCain stepped into a pile of political pain when he couldn't... more

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Cindy McCain and Michelle Obama star in a new television ad that highlights successes in helping the world's poor and encourages people to do more this election year.
But don't expect to see the presidential candidates' wives. Instead, their words - and those of others - flow through the mouth of actor Matt Damon.
"Thanks to everyday Americans who chose to make a difference, millions of lives have been saved in the world's poorest countries," Damon says, opening the spot, titled "Voices," by the bipartisan, anti-poverty group ONE and its Vote '08 project.
His is the only face seen, and he mouths words spoken by New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg, an independent; Michelle Obama, wife of Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama; and Cindy McCain, wife of Republican nominee-in-waiting John McCain.
Damon continues in different voices, focusing on the number of children who can now attend school, people with AIDS who are getting medication and those saved from preventable diseases.WASHINGTON (AP) -- Cindy McCain and Michelle Obama star in a new television ad that... more

The rigors of campaigning got too much for Cindy McCain on Wednesday. She suffered a minor wrist sprain when a supporter shook her hand at a fundraiser.
Apparently, the handshake aggravated an old carpal tunnel condition for which the candidate's wife had wrist surgery several years ago.
"During the rope line, an enthusiastic supporter shook Mrs. McCain's hand and exacerbated an existing condition," a statement from the campaign said. "Out of an abundance of caution, she decided to leave the event and visit the local hospital for X-rays, where she was treated for a minor sprain. We appreciate everyone's concern, and she is back on the campaign trail now."
Later in the afternoon, she stood beside her husband, presidential hopeful John McCain, wearing a soft cast on her right arm supported by a black fabric sling that sported a sparkly brooch.
"I'm absolutely fine," she said. John McCain joked that his wife now would "not have to shake so many hands".The rigors of campaigning got too much for Cindy McCain on Wednesday. She suffered a... more

Republican presidential nominee John McCain may have been married to his first wife when he obtained a marriage licence to wed Cindy McCain.
According to the Los Angeles Times, court documents show that the Arizona senator received a licence to marry his second wife about a month before a judge granted his divorce from Carol McCain in April 1980.
The report contradicts McCain's account from his 2002 memoir Worth Fighting For, in which he said he divorced Carol McCain in February 1980.
McCain has acknowledged he was legally married to Carol when he began seeing Cindy; he has said the two were separated. McCain's divorce petition stated he and Carol lived together until January 7, 1980, the Los Angeles Times reported.
A McCain campaign spokesman declined to comment on McCain's split from his first wife.
"The senator has always taken responsibility for it," said the spokesman, Tucker Bounds.
In the late 1970s, McCain was a US navy captain when his marriage to Carol, a former model who was nearly crippled in an auto accident during his captivity in Vietnam, began to fall apart. He later told his biographer, Robert Timberg, that he had engaged in a series of extra-marital "dalliances".
In 1979, McCain met Cindy Lou Hensley, the scion of an Arizona beer distributing family, at a Honolulu reception. They wed the following year. McCain retired from the navy in 1981 and, aided by his new wife's fortune from her family's beer distribution business, launched his political career with a successful run for the US House the following year. He was elected to the US Senate in 1986.
McCain's swift remarriage alienated him from Ronald and Nancy Reagan, who in winter and spring 1980 were campaigning for the White House. The Reagans were close to Carol McCain, according to the Los Angeles Times.
John and Cindy McCain have four children together. He and Carol had one daughter.
This is not the first time during the 2008 campaign that rumours of infidelity have plagued McCain.
In February, the New York Times published an article suggesting McCain had had an inappropriate affair with a telecommunications lobbyist. McCain and the lobbyist denied they had a romantic relationship.

The wife of presidential candidate John McCain has given the senator an ultimatum: Either he wins the election in November, or she’s seeking a divorce.
“I’m an attractive, younger woman, with plenty of ‘hot years’ left in her,” said Cindy McCain. “A woman like me doesn’t commit herself to a shlumpy, pile of skin like John because of his sex appeal.”
The senator’s wife is holding him to an alleged promise he made when he proposed to her, that one day he would be President of the United States. “That’s a binding contract,” she said, “and one in which I intend to enforce.”
“I know I’m not a lot to look at,” said Senator McCain, “but the years of abuse I spent in a Vietnam prison prepared me to be a devoted husband. Commander-in-Chief or not, I don’t know where else she will find that type of experience.”
“I'm not Michelle Obama,” Ms. McCain told an unidentified associate. “I am not in this for the long haul; I want to live in the White House. If old Iron Balls wants to continue getting fellated on a daily basis, he’d better beat the Democrats in the general election.”
Senator McCain brushed off his wife’s ranting as “campaign rhetoric.”
“Call it what he wants,” said Ms. McCain. “If he wants me to keep my oral agreement, then I expect him to keep his.”
Calls to Senator McCain's office have gone unreturned.
An attorney for Bill Clinton, however, is reviewing the McCain agreement to see if it’s enforceable by anyone living in the White House.
