The writers of The West Wing had no idea how this year's election was going to play out. Coincidence is really what played out for the finally two seasons of the show. Characters like the Democratic President Elect Matthew Santos at the end of the show with his love for Bob Dylan and being of a minority are one of the many things draw similarities to this years election. Now that he’s finally fired up on the soup-line economy, Barack Obama knows he can’t fade out again. He was eager to talk privately to a Democratic ex-president who could offer more fatherly wisdom — not to mention a surreptitious smoke — and less fraternal rivalry. I called the “West Wing” creator Aaron Sorkin (yes, truly) to get a read-out of the meeting. This is what he wrote:Now that he’s finally fired up on the soup-line economy, Barack Obama knows he... more

West Wing writer Aaron Sorkin is planning a movie about the creation and rise of Facebook.
Sorkin opened an account on Facebook on Wednesday and admitted to being a little in the dark about the site's workings:
!I understand there are a few other people using Facebook pages under my name - which I find more flattering than creepy - but this is me," he wrote. "I don't know how I can prove that but feel free to test me.
"I figured a good first step in my preparation would be finding out what Facebook is, so I've started this page. (Actually it was started by my researcher, Ian Reichbach, because my grandmother has more internet savvy than I do and she's been dead for 33 years.)"
Sorkin wants Facebook members to send him interesting stories they might have about the site though curiously it doesn't seem possible to add him as a friend right now.

It seems similarities between Barack Obama and Matt Santos (the character played by Jimmy Smitts on The West Wing) are not coincidental. The writers say the character was based on Obama, then a relatively unknown senatorial candidate, but it now seems to be Obama who is following in the footsteps of the fictional presidential candidate. Like Obama, Santos was a young charismatic politician from an ethnic minority aiming to rise above race, up against a not-so-conservative Republican. Only time will tell how reality measures up to Aaron Sorkin’s utopian vision of America. It seems similarities between Barack Obama and Matt Santos (the character played by... more

After Hillary's win in Pennsylvania last night, its not hard to see how this work of fiction could become a reality. A very entertaining read!
The Democratic Party is closer than it’s ever been to a political nightmare—a deadlocked convention. Though the odds of its actually happening are still remote, the idea is so rich with dramatic possibility that we asked Lawrence O’Donnell Jr., former West Wing writer-producer, to play out a scenario in movie-treatment form. The premise is that Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton arrive in Denver, neither having sufficient delegates to gain the nomination nor a decisive majority in the popular vote. And so it’s on…
