Urban Outfitters is in the midst of receiving heaps of backlash from angry consumers shortly after releasing (*imported*) knit "wine koozies" on their website. These koozies are a blatant rip-off of Freaker USA's American-made and patented product, the Freaker.
See (and join in on) the outrage here:

Apparently, this isn't the first time Urban Outfitters has ripped off independent designers:

(great xmas presents!)
From Freaker USA's website bio:
Manufactured in Troy, North Carolina, Freakers are nationally recognized as the one-size-fits-all knit koozie that functionally makes your beverage feel special. Presented in myriad of prismatic designs; the Freaker is a strong, tight knit that keeps your liquids insulated in style!
Freaker USA Inc. started with one man and two knitting needles. Now the company consists of a small group of young & inspired entrepreneurs using the ingenuity of their generation to create a unique and interactive business model. The FreakerTeam is a crew of quirky creatives; designers, internet-gurus and filmmakers. In a time that presents little financial opportunity for the contemporary youth, the Freaker team is creating their own job market through the social media they were bred on. They weave the Freaker so artfully and seamlessly in and out of everything they do, that it’s hard to see the lines between the product, the life and the profile of Freaker-culture.
Rather than seek out angel investors or venture capitalists for their project, the company once again is turning to the social media they know so well: crowdfunding via Kickstarter. Kickstarter is a dynamic platform where the general public can financially support creative projects through small donations. In order for this funding to succeed, each project launches a video in order to pitch the idea to potential backers which is ideally the entire online community.

Historically it's been the goal of every writer to be published. In blog-o-landia people can be published instantly. In about ten minutes, this rough draft will be out into the world, and millions of people will see it. (If by some slim chance it gets picked up by a mega-blog.) In this era of instant publication a new standard for cred has been established: the elusive book offer.
You mean someone will pay me to do what I've already been doing for free?
The successes of such blogs-to-books as Stuff White People Like, has spawned imitators looking for dat cash.
This is Why You're Fat, the ultracaloric picture blog, has recently gotten a deal to show pictures like this in their book:
(I ate something like that yesterday)
This blog appeals to internet food fetishists, and publishers hope these pictures translate to people buying gifts at Urban Outfitters. It's exciting to see the internet getting physically published to papyrus. But for every signed blog-to-book deal, there are hundreds that don't work out.
People assume this is how to get a blogdeal:
Aggregate thematic pictures.
Compile these thematic pictures, with mildly clever headings.
Get widespread recognition for idea.
Have your blog get noticed by a junior assistant at a publishing company. Wanting to impress his bosses, he suggests your blog be nominated for a book deal.
Publisher offers book deal.
Become hella rich.
But even if steps 1 - 5 happen, you have an important steps before you "become hella rich." You actually have to turn that book offer, into a book DEAL
I would guess that lots of book offers don't turn into deals because of the inherent flaw in blogginess. The wonders of the Digital Millenium Copyright Act, make it super easy to put whatever we want on our blogs, without licensing them. If a copyright holder doesn't like it, they can tell you to take it down, no lawsuits on the horizon! But the print medium is more formal. You need to secure rights to publish those funny pictures you found.
My advice for young bloggers looking for dat ca$h, is to secure the rights to the pictures on your blog. Either by taking the pictures yourself or by acquiring them through legal mumbo jumbo when fans submit their own pictures.
But you should probably work on your content first.Historically it's been the goal of every writer to be published. In blog-o-landia... more

The chairman of high street retailer Urban Outfitters has donated thousands of dollars to a homophobic US Senator.
Speaking in 2003, company chairman Richard Hayne told The Philadelphia Weekly: “As a company, we don’t contribute to any cause except non-controversial things like a breast cancer walk. I don’t know anyone who is for breast cancer.”
the biggest contribution has been towards Rick Santorum and affiliated projects.
Hayne has contributed a total of $13,150 to Santorum, who was recently voted out of office – largely due to his extremist right-wing views.
In the past, Santorum has made strong anti-gay comments, including equating homosexuality with incest, bestiality and paedophilia.

We've had a hole in our hearts ever since the original Polaroid company stopped manufacturing instant film, filed for Chapter 11, and sold off its brand name, but it looks like those crazy kids at The Impossible Project are making some small moves to turn things around after picking up the pieces last year: they'll be selling the remaining stock of cameras and film at Urban Outfitters starting tomorrow.
Sadly, that's not much, as there are only 700 hand-numbered kits containing a deadstock Polaroid ONE600 Classic camera and a pack of Type 779 film available, but at least there's more film to go around if you already have a camera -- additional 779 packs will also be on sale until stock runs out. We're not sure if this plan will raise enough cash to start the factory up again -- or if anyone else even cares about Polaroid anymore -- but you know where we'll standing in line tomorrow morning. We've had a hole in our hearts ever since the original Polaroid company stopped... more

When you shop at Urban Outfitters, Free People, or Anthropologie, do you know where your money is really going?
Richard Haynes, President/Founder of Urban Outfitters, owner of Anthropologie and Free People contributed over $13,000 to Santorum’s campaign and Political Action Committee over the years.
i admit, as much as I long for some of Anthropologie's cute dresses, I haven't been able to make myself pay the ridiculous prices, and this blog makes me really glad I haven't. I'd rather my dollars support companies that aren't anti-gay rights. But what do you think? Will this make a difference when you decide to go shopping? When you shop at Urban Outfitters, Free People, or Anthropologie, do you know where... more

Shopkeeper Steven Alan's low-key, rumpled looks are longtime faves among actors and musicians of the independent variety. While suits at his stores in New York and LA start at $700, a new collaboration with Urban Outfitters offers Alan style at more wallet-friendly prices.
Lark & Wolff by Steven Alan continues his subversive take on schoolboy and schoolgirl classics such as micro-checked shirts ($58), pocket T's ($28), plaid jumpers ($88) and high-waisted shorts ($68).
And unlike other class-for-mass collaborations, this hybrid isn't limited edition. There are plenty of options for both independent and mainstream thinkers. Shopkeeper Steven Alan's low-key, rumpled looks are longtime faves among actors... more

Urban Outfitters' is jumping on Target's "guest-designed lines" wagon. (I think Payless, and Express have jumped on too). Urban Outfitters' will feature a capsule collection by Geren Lockhart (designed by Geren Ford).
The line, Hawks by Geren Ford, will hit stores in May and retail for $48 to $128. Ford's contemporary label is sold at Barney's and Saks and retails for $98 to $547 (ouch).
According to the article Urban is taking on a new look thanks to the collection:
"Urban Outfitters is trying to infuse its merchandise with an Upper East Side jet-setting sensibility. The label for the Hawks line reads, 'Start in Texas. Skip to California. Head to New York. Jump Overseas. And Repeat.' It's so hipster, yet so not, which makes us think this could be a huge hit. If pencil skirts start proliferating off the Bedford L stop, at least we'll know why."
Cheaper yet fashionable clothes, always a plus. Urban Outfitters' is jumping on Target's "guest-designed lines"... more
