Documentary filmmaker Mark Becker's film about mariachi musician Carmelo Sánchez recently aired on the Sundance Channel. This intimate glimpse into Sánchez' life begins in San Francisco -- streets frayed with the gritty patina of a Kerouac "Subterraneans" nocturne. Together with close friend Arturo the two men eke it out as a mariachi trio -- although they are only a duo -- performing in bars and restaurants around San Francisco, earning as much as $100 between them on weekends. Although both Arturo and Carmelo, who have crossed the border from Mexico and have established their new life in California, troubles back home in Salvatierra beckon. Sánchez leaves on a commercial flight back to Mexico to take care of his mother suffering from full-blown diabetes, and to return to see his young teen-age daughters, one of whom hopes to have her quinceañera party for her birthday. Sánchez returns to the routine of domestic life, but remains conflicted with his career, personal aspirations and family obligations. Check out this moving portrait again on the Sundance Channel, Thursday April 24 at 10AM and Wednesday April 30 at 7:30AM.
