Zimbabwe needs an estimated US$438 million to restore normalcy in the education system for the next six months, Education Minister David Coltart told an international donors’ conference in Harare on Monday. Could we make more for this pour children that over the education problem must fight whit the huge nightmare of hunger? Since August, Zimbabwe, facing among the worst cholera epidemics in recent African history and with millions of people dependent on food aid from international organisations.
Coltart met various international donors and presented an ambitious programme to save the country’s education system which has been in terminal decline in tandem with a failing economy. “The ideal amount of money we need is US$438million, and that is just for the first six months. Now in the current economic climate and in the context of a world recession, that is a completely unattainable figure. So we have to cut it. So we are hoping to raise US$80million,” Coltart said after meeting representatives of the UN International Children’s Emergency Fund (UNICEF). A top United Nations delegation, including representatives from the World Health Organisation (WHO), World Food Programme (WFP) and the UN Children's Fund UNICEF, has been in Harare since Saturday. According to Zimbabwe government sources, the UN delegates discussed a strategy to address “humanitarian issues” with Tsvangirai and President Robert Mugabe.Zimbabwe needs an estimated US$438 million to restore normalcy in the education system... more
