It’s a pretty safe bet what you’re going to get with a feature starring Vince Vaughn and Kevin James as a pair of best friends and business partners. An intro will establish their undying bromance. Then there will be an incident or secret that will tear them asunder.
Finally, they will find their way back to one another, most likely conveyed via a joyous, slow motion, leaping chest bump or perhaps a 360 degree pan of an awesome bear hug. No need to post a spoiler alert, you’ve seen this progression countless times before.

Given the political climate, it’s a wonder that “Creation” was greenlit. It is after all the story of how Charles Darwin came to write “On The Origin of the Species,” which, alongside Einstein’s Theory of Relativity, marks one of mankinds’ greatest leaps forward in understanding who we are and where we came from.
Sadly, there are still a sizable number of often loud people who believe the earth was created in seven days, that humans walked with dinosaurs, and the fact that we descended from apes is just poppycock. There is at least one state where creationism -- that’s you Kansas -- must be taught as a legitimate theory along side evolution.
(Presumably, even fundamentalists now concede that Galileo was correct: the earth revolves around the sun; not vice versa.)
But beyond that it received a go-ahead, it is surprising that a film so imaginatively produced, so well written, so excellently acted, didn’t do better. Or perhaps these two situations are related. Can you do well even if you don’t play in Kansas?Given the political climate, it’s a wonder that “Creation” was... more

With advocates of Creationism a formidable force to this day, consider the plight of Charles Darwin, whose “On the Origin of Species” in 1859 established him -- according to one character in the film “Creation” -- as the man who killed God. While his landmark book on the theories of evolution and natural selection are now taken as gospel -- so to speak -- Darwin’s personal affairs and private dilemmas are less widely known.
Director Jon Amiel’s feature is a handsome and finely nuanced examination of the British scientist’s struggle to formulate his greatest work, while still honoring his deeply devout wife and confronting his grief over the death of his beloved eldest daughter. With advocates of Creationism a formidable force to this day, consider the plight of... more

Just in case you thought writing On the Origin of Species was a walk in the park for Charles Darwin, think again. According to the new movie Creation, it turns out that the renowned naturalist encountered more than a few stumbling blocks in the course of drafting the book that would establish the concept of evolution. Not only was he wracked with chronic illness, he was also concerned with how his work would fly in the face of religious doctrine and consumed with guilt over the death of his daughter Anne.
Imagine now if, on top of all of that, Darwin had regularly ducked into a movie theater and gotten a gander at the collection of hitherto-unknown life forms featured in movies. The ones that seem to defy several, if not all, the aspects of his theories. At best, their revelations would've thrown a monkey wrench into the writing process. At worst, they might've compelled the man to forsake his work in favor of a lifetime collecting decorative thimbles.
Fortunately for all our sakes, Darwin remained blissfully unaware of these rarefied beasts. But that doesn't mean we can't take a good look at 'em and see what havoc they might have wreaked in established science in "10 Creatures that Would Have Stumped Darwin:"

So… more li’l doll people. Been a good year for that kinda thing — CORALINE, $9.99. And now there’s 9, in which a group of burlapy, goggle-eyed humanoids struggle for survival in a post-apocalyptic waste heap. Would it surprise you that Tim Burton and Timur Bekmambetov were co-producers on this project? Would it further surprise you that the CG animated film — directed by newcomer Shane Acker, based on his deservedly highly-praised short film (do a YouTube search on “9 Shane Acker”; it’s worth tracking down) — has tons of grotty atmosphere and an overall dark attitude?
And monsters. Really weird, disturbing monsters (if the giant, soul-sucking spider robot doesn’t freak you out, the hypno-snake will). Which is a good thing, because the story itself isn’t really anything to speak of. Shame that a voice cast that includes Christopher Plummer, Jennifer Connelly, Elijah Wood, and Martin Landau doesn’t have better lines to deliver, but when you’ve got little burlap people defending themselves against a robot pterodactyl, snappy patter can sort of take a back seat.
