Newt Gingrich Makes An Islamic Extremist Recruitment Video

In a straight-to-DVD movie that will premiere tomorrow night in D.C., Newt Gingrich and Citizens United warn Americans of the impending threat of radical Islam. As one of their talking heads says in the trailer, "This is the end of times. This is the final struggle."

The movie, called "America At Risk," paints the world as a dangerous place filled with radicalized Muslims who want to -- and, importantly, can -- destroy America.

"The war on terror, and the ideology behind it, have only just begun," Gingrich's wife, Callista Gingrich, intones while she and Gingrich stand in front of a green-screened New York skyline.

If it looks familiar, that's because it's extremely similar to movies by the Clarion Fund, the nonprofit which produced "The Third Jihad" and "Obsession." The latter, sent to 30 million homes during the 2008 election(http://tpmmuckraker.talkingpointsmemo.com/2010/08/_obsession_and_the_cordoba_house.php), helped plant the seeds of the current spate of anti-mosque protests and anti-Muslim rhetoric.

It has the same themes (immediate threat of death by Islam), the same shots of terrorist attacks and scary "death to America" rallies, and many of the same people, like M. Zuhdi Jasser, a Muslim doctor from Arizona, and Bernard Lewis, a Princeton professor and sounce of the aforementioned "final struggle" line.

"America At Risk" goes on the attack against the Obama administration much more than the Clarion movies, however, calling it "crazy" that the administration doesn't say "Islam" enough when discussing the war on terror. Former White House Chief of Staff and current presidential candidacy hinter-at John Bolton, notably, appears.

"Washington refuses to tell the truth about the war we are fighting," reads one press release.

In the lead-up to his movie's release (now available for $19.95 on pre-order), Gingrich has been one of the most outspoken opponents of the Park51 Islamic center in downtown Manhattan. He has demanded the government step in and stop the "mosque" from being built. He has called its backers "radical Islamists" and likened them to Nazis. Even in the Year 1076 Muslims Couldn't Get Along with Their Neighbors

The First Crusade played a very important part in Medieval England. The First Crusade was an attempt to re-capture Jerusalem. After the capture of Jerusalem by the Muslims in 1076, any Christian who wanted to pay a pilgrimage to the city faced a very hard time. Muslim soldiers made life very difficult for the Christians and trying to get to Jerusalem was filled with danger for a Christian. This greatly angered all Christians.

One Christian - called Alexius I of Constantinople - feared that his country might also fall to the Muslims as it was very close to the territory captured by the Muslims. Constantinople is in modern day Turkey. Alexius called on the pope - Urban II - to give him help.

In 1095, Urban spoke to a great crown at Clermont in France. He called for a war against the Muslims so that Jerusalem was regained for the Christian faith. In his speech he said:
"Christians, hasten to help your brothers in the East, for they are being attacked. Arm for the rescue of Jerusalem under your captain Christ. Wear his cross as your badge. If you are killed your sins will be pardoned."

Those who volunteered to go to fight the Muslims cut out red crosses and sewed them on their tunics. The French word "croix" means cross and the word changed to "croisades" or crusades. The fight against the Muslims became a Holy War.

Many people did volunteer to fight on the First Crusade.
There were true Christians who wanted to reclaim Jerusalem for their belief and get the Muslims out of the city. There were those who knew they had committed sin and that by going on the Crusade they might be forgiven by God. They had also been told by the pope that if they were killed, they would automatically go to heaven as they were fighting for God. There were those who thought that they might get rich by taking the wealth that they thought existed in Jerusalem. Reflections on a Crusade Gone Wrong: Bush's Iraq War 2003-2010

The United States decries the forces of Islamic radicalism. Conservative Christians in this country rail against “Islamofascism” and “Sharia Law” and claim that Islam is an enemy of everything America stands for. But American crusading spirit is far from spent. Activities of church groups and more shockingly, of the US Military, give jihadist all the fodder they need to rally their own base to the threat.

Because of how Bush packaged what was and very much remains “his” war.

It’s a serious problem: The Military Religious Freedom Foundation (MRFF) on August 11, 2010 called on Defense Secretary Gates to end “unconstitutional proselytizing” in the US Military. Bruce Wilson of Alternet reported(http://www.alternet.org/world/147803/mass_baptism_of_marines_exploited_by_jihadist_website_as_proof_of_%22christian_crusade%22_in_afghanistan) on August 10 that “the Jihadists are observing unrestricted, unlawful Christian activity within the military and interpreting it as irrefutable proof of a Christian Crusade that justifies jihad.” And it does. One can’t wage a crusade, after all, and expect the other side not to crusade right back. The Jihadists are dancing to a tune we called.

Are we our own worst enemy in the war on terror?

The L.A. Times Blog(http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/lanow/2010/08/marines-headed-for-afghanistan-undergo-christian-baptism-in-ocean-off-camp-pendletonwaterare-.html) reported a few days before Wilson wrote for Alternet of “a mass baptism of marines from Lt. Col. Lawrence Kaifesh’s 3rd Battalion unit as “part of Operation Sword of the Spirit, a program meant to prepare the battalion for duty in the Taliban stronghold of Helmand province.””

Operation Sword of the Spirit.

Does an operational plan with a title like that belong in the US Military? Sword of the Spirit? How is this different from, say, the “Sword of Allah”?

This is not a war between Christianity and Islam. We cannot allow it to be packaged as such, and we cannot allow such a lie to be perpetrated and sustained.

President Bush set the tone when on September 16, 2001 he called for a global “crusade” against terrorism. With a call like that, it’s no wonder his later assurances that the US was not at war with Islam fell flat, or went unheard. And after all, he told French President Chirac that “This confrontation is willed by God, who wants to use this conflict to erase his people’s enemies before a New Age begins.”The United States decries the forces of Islamic radicalism.
