I had the honor of speaking with Mr. Rosenfeld once. A great intelligent man that can also legally Smoke a joint inside a police station.-- Great informative article.

____________________________________________________________________________________
(Fortune Magazine) -- When Irvin Rosenfeld, 56, picks me up at the Fort Lauderdale airport, his SUV reeks of marijuana. The vice president for sales at a local brokerage firm, Rosenfeld has been smoking 10 to 12 marijuana cigarettes a day for 38 years, he says.
That's probably unusual in itself, but what makes Rosenfeld exceptional is that for the past 27 years, he has been copping his weed directly from the United States government.
Every 25 days Rosenfeld goes to a pharmacy and picks up a tin of 300 federally grown and rolled cigarettes that have been sent there for him by the National Institute of Drug Abuse (NIDA), acting with approval from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.
Rosenfeld smokes the marijuana to relieve chronic pain and muscle spasms caused by a rare bone disease. When he was 10, doctors discovered that his skeleton was riddled with more than 200 tumors, due to a condition known as multiple congenital cartilaginous exostosis. Despite seven operations, he still lives with scores of tumors in his bones.
Rosenfeld is one of four people in the United States whom the federal government supplies with medical marijuana. Each is a living anomaly because, officially, the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration, NIDA, and the FDA all take the position that marijuana has "no currently accepted medical use."
That's the only way federal law can continue to classify marijuana, like heroin, as a "Schedule I controlled substance," forbidden from being prescribed by doctors. (Numerous dangerous, psychoactive, and addictive opium derivatives, by contrast, are more leniently classified as Schedule II drugs, allowing prescription use.)
Over the years the government's position has become progressively more embattled, if not untenable.

From a Norml Facebook Update:
#NORML BREAKING NEWS @JackHerer taken from backstage at Portland Hempstalk by ambulance to hospital, suffered collapse, cause unknown.
Jack Herer (born June 18, 1939) is an American political activist and the author of The Emperor Wears No Clothes (ISBN 0-9524560-0-1) (1985), a book which has been used in efforts to decriminalize cannabis and is considered by many to be the Bible for marijuana and hemp enthusiast which he offers online for FREE at his website Jackherer.com.
A former Goldwater Republican, Herer is now a pro-marijuana and hemp activist. He has written two books, the aforementioned The Emperor Wears No Clothes and Grass. There has also been a documentary made about his life called, The Emperor of Hemp. He believes that the hemp plant should be decriminalized because it has been shown to be a renewable source of fuel, food, and medicine, and can be grown in virtually any part of the world, and that the U.S. government deliberately hides the proof of this. He has devoted his life to the support of cannabis, hemp and marijuana.
Jack Herer also gave his name to a specific strain of cannabis (which StrainReview noted for its great medicinal properties.)
Herer ran for United States President twice, in 1988 (1,949 votes) and 1992 (3,875 votes) as the Grassroots Party candidate.
In July 2000, Herer suffered a minor heart attack and a major stroke, resulting in difficulties speaking and moving the right side of his body.[2] Herer mostly recovered, and claimed in May 2004 that treatment with the psychoactive mushroom amanita muscaria was the secret.[3] (from Wikipedia)
Jack Herer is also a major source of information on Current and an inspiration for myself and others through his selfless activism. I can think of few people that have done more for the cause of marijuana legalization then Jack Herer. I speak for all marijuana law reformers when I say this, "Jack, we hope you recover and we appreciate your efforts."From a Norml Facebook Update:

This kinda stuff upsets me.
"The term medical marijuana took on dramatic new meaning in February, 2000 when researchers in Madrid announced they had destroyed incurable brain tumors in rats by injecting them with THC, the active ingredient in cannabis.
The Madrid study marks only the second time that THC has been administered to tumor-bearing animals; the first was a Virginia investigation 26 years ago. In both studies, the THC shrank or destroyed tumors in a majority of the test subjects.
Most Americans don't know anything about the Madrid discovery. Virtually no major U.S. newspapers carried the story, which ran only once on the AP and UPI news wires, on Feb. 29, 2000.
The ominous part is that this isn't the first time scientists have discovered that THC shrinks tumors. In 1974 researchers at the Medical College of Virginia, who had been funded by the National Institute of Health to find evidence that marijuana damages the immune system, found instead that THC slowed the growth of three kinds of cancer in mice - lung and breast cancer, and a virus-induced leukemia."

The tide of public opinion is slowly moving towards decriminalization. As polling expert Nate Silver recently pointed out, only 10% supported legalization in 1969, while at least 40% do so today. The younger you are, the more likely you are to have tried marijuana, and to support its legalization. NORML doesn’t have to persuade anyone to win; if they just wait for the anti-pot geezers to die, most Americans will favor legalization within a decade. The tide of public opinion is slowly moving towards decriminalization. The SETH Group brings together scientists dedicated to pursuing the most hopeful treatments for cancer. We are open-minded skeptics who believe that carefully controlled experiments can reveal if there is truth in novel therapies that might be integrated with conventional medical treatments.
Background:
The major active component of the medicinal plant cannabis, Δ9-THC, has been shown in experiments with rats to have therapeutic potential against brain tumors. SETH Group scientists Garret Yount, Ph.D. and Sean McAllister, Ph.D. designed experiments in a time-lapse microscope to test whether Δ9-THC can stop the growth of human glioblastoma multiforma (GBM) brain cancer cells. Using the same tests that are used to judge new chemotherapies, the team discovered that the herbal compound kills human GBM cells at a concentration that is nontoxic to normal brain cells. Click here to see Featured Experiment.
Implications:
No chemotherapy can match this nontoxic anti-cancer action. The implication is that this plant compound could be a safe medicine against brain tumors, without the side effects of chemotherapy. These exciting results may be just the tip of the iceberg, however, because Δ9-THC is only one of many active compounds in medicinal cannabis. Other active constituents of the Cannabis plant (called cannabinoids) are also likely to have a nontoxic anti-cancer action. The SETH Group brings together scientists dedicated to pursuing the most hopeful... more

There are plans for a Million Marijuana March on DC for July 4th 2009.
I've been talking with the organizer who had some interesting things to say about support he has gotten. This could be a pretty big deal if he pulls it off!
Here's what he said about the initial plans and who's involved:
"Ask Larry Lippert of American Cannabis, or Richard Rawlings from Norml, Or Casper from Time for Hemp, all people I have associated with and are collaborating with me on this.
... I am willing to give up my freedom, even my life, so that others can be free, that I was able to confidently coin myself in the phrase and context of a civil rights leader... Fear cannot drive freedom. Only spur on tyranny. So be not afraid brother. There is no greater an action in a man's life then to be a martyr of freedom, and many have sacrificed to do so, I am not afraid to sacrifice.
Also me and my counter-parts in NORML, American Cannabis, The Marijuana Policy Project, and artists like the Individuals and DJ Slim are currently contacting Willie Nelson, Cheech and Chong, Cypress Hill, ZZ Top and Woody Harrelson personally, to help us promote the march. The Million Man March only had Snoop Dog as they're main artist helping them promote, and they acquired nearly 750 THOUSAND marchers. Imagine what we can do with the artists we are acquiring.
There is nothing to fear but fear itself. Be brave my brother, the world needs you too."
-Tom D. (TRM3)
We need more freedom fighters like Tom. The media won't cover it unless it's impossible to ignore it. A million people in DC would certainly draw some attention. Especially with headliners like DJ Slim, Willie Nelson, Cheech and Chong, Cypress Hill, ZZ Top and Woody Harrelson!
Here's the TRM3 mission statement:
WHAT IS TRM3 THE REAL MILLION MARIJUANA MARCH: TRM3 The Real Million Marijuana March is a grass-roots organization based out of Salt Lake City Utah, who's aim is to gather one Million protesters in D.C. July 4th of 2009 for the worlds largest sit-in and protest of marijuana being illegal!!! Being as it is the worlds largest sit-in, it is a great act of civil-disobedience, and though we may get permits for our routes there and to arrive there, there is no permit issued by the U.S. government for a sit-in with no end date. We want a million activists to gather and STAY in D.C. until the United States government legalizes marijuana. This massive act of civil disobedience will cause the United States government to react in one of three ways: They will ignore us (which is highly doubtful) or; They will remove us (probably by force which will most likely end in rioting and martyr our cause further like the civil rights riots of African Americans in the past) or; Legalize it. These are the only options we give our government if we can accomplish one million people in D.C. next year. So help spread the news, help spread the word, and those that believe in personal freedom and the right for everyone to choose for themselves, I ask for a dedication to be there and protest with us in non-violence. Thank you! -Tom D. (TRM3)

Jack Herer has for years now been touting this $100,000 challenge from the back of his famous book, "The Emperor Wears No Clothes", yet no one has apparently risen to the task? Or have they tried and they just simply failed?? If they failed, then why aren't we using hemp to it's fullest potential?? Instead we have banned this completely amazing resource that could potentially become America's new multi-billion dollar crop, giving our economy a much needed boost!
THE CHALLENGE: PROVE THEM WRONG!
If all fossil fuels and their derivatives, as well as trees for paper and construction, were banned in order to save the planet, reverse the Greenhouse Effect and stop deforestation; then there is only one known annually renewable natural resource that is capable of providing the overall majority of the world's paper and textiles; meet all of the world's transportation, industrial and home energy needs, while simultaneously reducing pollution, rebuilding the soil and cleaning the atmosphere all at the same time... and that substance is the same one that has done it before . . . CANNABIS HEMP!
[ read the rest of the facts listed in the challenge statement or feel free to wander around his site, there's lots of good information there! ]
##### The Number One Roadblock - The DEA's Controlled Substances Act #####
We need our leaders to force the DEA to comply with law stating that any substance should be rescheduled immediately upon change of status of said substance. Cannabis should have been rescheduled from a Schedule 1 to a Schedule 2 substance back in 1996 when California passed it's first medicinal marijuana law. Now more than 12 years later there are 13 states with such laws, yet the DEA continues to refuse the rescheduling of cannabis to reflect the reality of accepted medicinal value. In such refusal they are actually breaking the law!
Schedule 1 is reserved for dangerous substances with no accepted medical use. This gives any such substances top priority in law enforcement. This catagory includes, heroine, LSD, peyote, magic mushrooms, GHB, and THC (cannabis), - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Schedule_I_drugs
Schedule 2 is for substances that may be dangerous yet have accepted medicinal uses. This category includes cocaine, methamphetamine, opium, and morphine. - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Schedule_II_drugs
Interestingly enough, all prescription drugs, alcohol and tobacco are not included in any of the schedules...
Do you think cannabis is more dangerous than cocaine, crystal meth and morphine???
I would actually argue that cannabis should be no more than Schedule 3 or 4 to accurately reflect reality.

Arnold Schwarzenegger admits to smoking pot with Tommy Chong. How many Americans have gone to jail in America for mere possession? Too many! We have been in a War on American soil. Billions of our tax dollars have used to fight a war against ordinary Americans who choose to smoke cannabis, while our politicians openly admit, they did it too.
When will Americans stand up and stop wasting money on a war of choice on our own soil. Families have been destroyed. Property has been seized all for a weed? Its an "Assault on Reason".
Our economy is falling apart, due to glutney run amuck. Its time we stop the spinners who are looting our economy. The same spinners who have spun us into a war of choice, using fixed facts. The facts are contrary to what Americans are told daily. Americans have been misled by the same people who are profitting from the War on US.
Cannabis/Hemp is a green market which would compete with many products supported by Wall Street. Wall Street is corrupt! They mislead, cheat and lie. Trust is earned. Wall Street has not earned our trust. Why trust them further. Facts matter!
Jack Herer wrote a book, "The Emperor Wears No Clothes". In his book he states facts and backs up his facts with real documents. In his book he offers a challenge:

Why is marijuana illegal? Once upon a time, there were several "facts" that made it seem obvious why it should be, but many of those "facts" are simply myths, and ridiculous ones at that.
Myth 1: Marijuana can cause dangerous, psychotic behavior.
Perhaps the most ridiculous of the myths; it is possibly the main reason for its prohibition. Marijuana was demonized and portrayed as a dangerous substance that would make you lose your mind. In fact, marijuana has some medicinal benefits and is less harmful than most of the side effects caused by prescription drugs.
Myth 2: "The War on Drugs" has been incredibly successful in putting away those terrible marijuana users.
Really? If you see successful as spending billions in tax dollars to incarcerate 37 million non-violent drug offenders, then sure. But, Jeffrey Miron, professor of economics at Harvard, says the legalization of marijuana would generate a tax revenue of $6.2 billion annually if taxed similar to alcohol and tobacco. We would also save $7.7 billion in government expenditure.
Some drug offenders serve more time than child molesters, and it costs between $20,000 and $30,000 per person per year to keep them in prison. I believe our tax dollars and our law enforcement would serve better purposes elsewhere and considering the state of our economy, that tax revenue might be a much-needed boost.
Myth 3: If legalized, there would be an increase in marijuana use, especially among youth. Use of most substances, including alcohol, is more prevalent among teenagers and 20-somethings. These are the people that are prone to experimentation, legal or not. Getting in trouble for underage use of legalized marijuana would be much less detrimental to teenagers' futures than sticking them with a misdemeanor or felony offense for the rest of their life.
Also, advertising would undoubtedly be restricted just as it is for cigarettes and alcohol, so no marketing for kids.
No Joe Camel, no Mary Jane.
In the Netherlands, the sale of marijuana is tolerated. The number of users did increase after more shops started selling it, but according to a recent World Health Organization survey, after that increase, Americans continue to use more marijuana than the Dutch.
Myth 4: Increase in use would mean more health problems. Marijuana smoke does contain carcinogens like cigarettes, but it tends to be used much less to achieve the desired result. The National Institute of Health's statistics show that 400,000 people die a year in cigarette-smoking related deaths. Yet, it also shows that there is no record of any marijuana related death in known history. These are some of the facts, and they are why I support the legalization of marijuana.
I'm not even a user, but I think people should educate themselves on the facts of this, or any issue, before drawing conclusions based on hearsay. In my opinion, the pros outweigh the cons in this case. Why is marijuana illegal? Once upon a time, there were several "facts" that... more
