Jack Herer, author of “The Emperor Wears No Clothes,” the seminal resource for marijuana and hemp information, explains that after the Spanish-American War in 1898, Hearst had developed a personal dislike and prejudice toward Mexicans, prompted by the “seizure of 800,000 acres of his prime Mexican timberland by the ‘marihuana’-smoking army of Pancho Villa.” Hearst papers, the chief purveyors of “yellow journalism” at the time, slapped terrifying headlines across their front pages: “Marihuana Makes Fiends of Boys in 30 Days” and “Hotel Clerk Identifies Marijuana Smoker as ‘Wild Gunman’ Arrested for Shootings,” screamed the bold type, stoking a new hysteria. Before long, the public was well aware of this new and threatening drug menace. Hearst’s prejudices weren’t restricted to Mexicans, as Herer tells it:
Hearst’s stories portray[ed] “negroes” and Mexicans as frenzied beasts who, under the influence of marijuana would play anti-white “voodoo-satanic” music (jazz) and heap disrespect and “viciousness” upon the predominantly white readership. Other such offenses resulting from this drug-induced “crime wave” included: stepping on white men’s shadows, looking white people directly in the eye for three seconds or more, looking at a white woman twice, laughing at a white person ... For such “crimes,” hundreds of thousands of Mexicans and blacks spent, in aggregate, millions of years in jails, prisons and on chain gangs, under brutal segregation laws that remained in effect throughout the U.S. until the 1950s and ’60s.
But that’s not the conspiracy.
....................................................................
As Anslinger continued his lecture about the upcoming marijuana legislation, interrupted occasionally by outbursts from Hearst, Lammot DuPont reached into a leather satchel he’d placed in front of him and pulled out a sheaf of papers. “I have managed to secure the information we spoke about earlier,” he said in a low whisper, spreading the papers across the table for all to see. Before them was the draft of an article being compiled by the editors at Popular Mechanics Magazine about hemp — industrial marijuana. One headline in particular stood out because of words that even this group of the wealthiest Americans rarely came across, and perhaps had never seen in print: “Billion-Dollar Crop.”

Jack Herer, much beloved Emperor of Hemp and marijuana hero. is dead at age 70. Herer was a tireless advocate in the battle to end marijuana prohibition. He was perhaps the world's most famous activist for the decriminalization of marijuana and the utilization of hemp.
Jack Herer was born June 18, 1939. A former Goldwater Republican, Herer became a political activist and the author of The Emperor Wears No Clothes, a book which is now a classic polemic in the effort to decriminalize marijuana.

Famous marijuana activist and author Jack Herer, "The Emperor of Hemp," died Thursday morning at 11:07 Pacific time.
"Jack deserves kudos for having publicized the benefits of cannabis hemp in his classic book, The Emperor Wears No Clothes," said Dale Gieringer of California NORML.
"He also labored long and hard on innumerable initiatives to re-legalize hemp in California," Gieringer said.
Last September, Herer suffered a serious heart attack at the Portland Hempstalk Festival, just two minutes after giving his last, impassioned speech. He was taken from the site by ambulance and hospitalized, and had struggled with health problems since that time.
"No one has ever educated more people about hemp and cannabis than Jack Herer," said Paul Stanford, organizer of Hempstalk. "Jack's legacy will live on for generations to come."
"I've known and been friends with Jack since 1982, and he wrote the first edition of his book in my home in 1985," Stanford said. "I am going to miss you, Jack."
Herer had already suffered a minor heart attack and a major stroke in July 2000, resulting in difficulties speaking and moving the right side of his body. He mostly recovered, and said in May 2004 that treatment with the psychoactive mushroom amanita muscaria was the secret.
When Herer's seminal work The Emperor Wears No Clothes (which Jack later generously made available in its entirety online) was published in 1985, the book reframed the debate about cannabis/hemp in the U.S. and worldwide. The Current community received some pretty awful news this weekend, Jack Herer (notable advocate for the legalization of marijuana, author of 'The Emperor Wears No Clothes,' curator of the H.E.M.P. group on Current.com, and all around great guy) was reported to be in critical condition after suffering a heart attack shortly following an appearance on-stage at "Hempstalk" in Portland.
Updates have been scarce, filtering out via Facebook and Twitter. Hopefully community members of Jack's H.E.M.P. group will keep the rest of the community updated.

Many of the news reports are incorrect with their reporting of the details of this raid. No plants were seized during this raid although there have been several conflicting news reports that over 70 plants were seized from Rick Simpson's home; and this is simply untrue.
Amherst PD denied that they incited this action when reached for comment, and deferred inquiry for detail to the RCMP. - http://www.salem-news.com/articles/de...
The Amherst RCMP would not own up to raiding Rick Simpson's house, in fact no departments will take direct responsibility for the latest in a string of cowardly acts they committed against Rick Simpson and his "patients" on November 25, 2009. This is the third police raid since 2005 on the man who cures cancer (and controls many other illnesses) with hemp oil.. the very one who healed thousands!
Police were aware of the cameras in the house due to posted window and door signs (the door which they broke open causing damage when they knew no one was home). Not to mention the fact that they stole the cameras too.
We are asking for the public's assistance to bring this issue to the world. Copy and distribute this video NOW! Jack Herer is alert and communicating with family and friends. Here, he is recovering from oral thrush, and his mouth is dry and irritated.

(EUGENE, Ore.) - For over 30 years, Jack Herer has been the inexhaustible guru of the hemp movement. Many people have expressed their deep concern for Jack's well-being since his heart attack in mid-September, at an Oregon hemp festival.
Sunday night, Jack Herer was taken by ambulance to the hospital in Eugene from the rehabilitation center where he has been receiving care. His breathing became more distressed throughout the afternoon, and finally he was rushed to the Emergency Room.
He was diagnosed with bronchitis, and given antibiotics to overcome the illness. Such prevention may not have been possible just a few days ago, when a "Do Not Transport" order was in effect. Because of a recent change in Jack's care, they were able to get him appropriate treatment, which could literally have saved his life.
More good news, Jack has been responding well to Speech, Physical and Occupational therapy treatments administered at the care center where he's residing in Eugene, Oregon. He is coherent. His speech is beginning to come back. He has no IV's, no breathing tube, and though he has a feeding tube, they expect to remove it as soon as this week.
The bad news, is the breakdown within the ranks of Jack's supporters. While Jack works to heal and rehabiitate, the world outside his room is swirling with controversy.Bonnie King Salem-News.com

Jack Herer is recovering from a heart attack, but his mission to bring hemp into the spotlight as an answer for multiple problems, continues.
(SALEM, Ore.) - Jack Herer is a very resilient fellow. 40 years ago he was a Goldwater Republican. Nine years ago he suffered a minor heart attack, and a major stroke.
All these calamaties and more, he survived.
But his fight continues. For the last four weeks, Jack has been in a Portland Oregon hospital, slowly recovering from a heart attack. On Monday, he was discharged from Legacy Emanuel Hospital, and his family moved him to a nursing facility in Eugene, according to Oregonlive.com.
Exactly one month ago, Jack was stricken by a heart attack. So, each day, the challenge is no less than the day before. The challenge to bring Jack back.
He was in a medically induced coma for several days, on the critical list in ICU for nearly three weeks. Over time, he showed some improvements. His EEG (brain scan) showed more activity, and he would open his eyes. He stretched his arms and legs, yawned, turned his head from side to side. They removed the respirator.
Last week he was taken off the Critical list, moved out of ICU, and remains in stable condition. Stable enough, it seems, to be moved to another facility.
Still though, there has been no word from Jack. "He is waking up and gazing appropriately when someone's talking," Paul Stanford (THCF) said, "but he's not really communicating in any way."
We've been told that Jack responds to touch, has squeezed the hands of close friends and family, and that he even sat up in bed one day when his daughter came into the room. None of this means he's okay. It just means he's still with us, and working on recovery.

One month after suffering a heart attack and subsequently reported to have died, Jack Herer is alive and convalescing at a nursing home in Eugene, Oregon. "He is waking up and gazing appropriately when someone's talking," THCF's Paul Stanford says, "but he's not really communicating in any way."
Herer was stricken on Sept. 12 at the Portland Hempstalk. He went without oxygen for 20 minutes while awaiting emergency treatment and, as a result, now has little brain activity.
However, following experimental hemp oil treatments administered by his wife Jeannie, Herer was removed from intensive care and since transferred from the Legacy Emmanuel Medical Center in Portland to a facility in Eugene.

Jack is a devoted man. He has devoted his life to the cause to decriminalize hemp and cannabis. He stands strong on the belief that the cannabis sativa (hemp/marijuana) plant should be decriminalized, having been proven to be a renewable source of fuel, food and medicine, and he's been telling the story without fail, for over 30 years.
He also contends that the U.S. government deliberately hides the proof of hemp's benefits. He tried to take his message all the way to the top, twice running for President of the United States (1988 and 1992) as the Grassroots Party candidate.
Born on June 18, 1939, in NY, NY, Jack is well known as one of the first American Cannabis activists. His book, The Emperor Wears No Clothes, has been a catalyst in the advocacy to decriminalize cannabis since the first edition was published in 1985.
Over 600,000 books have been sold, and an online version is available on his site, for easy access to a treasure trove of educational research. By selling his books, tapes, CDs and movies, Jack has helped support the hemp movement for the last 20+ years.
Many know Jack Herer's name for something even more notorious, a specific strain of cannabis named after him with sativa dominant characteristics. This is a genre he understands, and has contributed to greatly.
Jack won the seventh High Times Cannabis Cup, the "Academy Awards of Marijuana", the festival held annually in Amsterdam, The Netherlands, probably the most famous cannabis event among tourists, consumers and cannabis-oriented businesses worldwide.
Yes, Jack's made quite a name for himself.
Jack Herer was the first to "put your money where your mouth is". He offered a reward of $100,000 to anyone that could prove marijuana had killed a user. For over a dozen years, no one has tried to collect.
"It is the safest, smartest, best medicine on the planet," Jack said at HempStalk. "You'd have to be stupid not to use it!"
In his book, Jack reiterates it's low risk use, "A smoker would theoretically have to consume nearly 1,500 pounds of marijuana within about fifteen minutes to induce a lethal response." This is true, yet the public is still under another impression.
It didn't start out that way though.

In addition, celebstoner has retracted their announcement of Herer's death. In light of these facts it is with pleasure the Portland Progressive Examiner retracts an earlier report of Herer's death.
