A helicopter has crashed in central Auckland while installing the Telecom Christmas tree. The seven-storey-high tree was being put up near the Te Wero Island bridge connecting the Viaduct and Wynyard Quarter on the waterfront.
The crew and pilot are OK, Telecom says. A St John ambulance spokesman said it was taking one person to Auckland City Hospital with minor to moderate injuries.
The accident around 10.30am was seen live on the TVNZ website as it was streaming the event.
Witness Steve Hall said the helicopter appeared to be trying to lift a tower near the drawbridge.
It then hovered below the tip of the tower where the blades clipped the connecting wire, threw the wire into the air and sent the helicopter into a spin before it crashed into the ground, with the cockpit pointing up into the airA helicopter has crashed in central Auckland while installing the Telecom Christmas... more

Waiheke Island's
Okahuiti/Ostend Residents & Ratepayers Association
hosts a workshop on Community Planning, with guest speakers Tess Lieu, Max Thompson, Joel, Marjike Ransom.
March 2011
What happens when centralised Council continually imposes top-down mentality & inappropriate business led plans on small communities?
Waiheke Island, New Zealand, is well known for its population's forthright opinions, historically dictated neither by profit led plans nor necessity for conformity.
Here representatives of the island & greater Auckland Community groups discuss how to go about working with existing structures & having a positive impact on the spanking new Auckland City governance outlines.
Auckland Council has recently gone against express will of the majority of its voters & conglomerated formally independent electorates into its 'Super City' Structure. This is in keeping with the National Governments theology of a centralised power base. This increases concern that these growing international trends tend to reduce power of unique cultural and environmental heritage, overriding the will of its people and undermining individual and community growth in favour of a predatory and dominating business model.
Anyway - as this film was commissioned & not my own project, I report as shown on the day (give or take initial minimal artistic licence). However I remain sceptical of these CLD plans, as a donkey may remain sceptical of the dangling carrot - to placate or not placate, that is the question.....Waiheke Island's

“Giddy Up” is an amusingly cheeky music video by New Zealand’s Tahuna Breaks, directed and illustrated by Leah Morgan. The video is a sexy parody of the Pointer Sisters’ 1970s Sesame Street classic, “Pinball Number Count.” Now you’ll never look at those pinball machines in the same way ever again!
This piece includes colorful pictures and the very sexy, humorous music video.

WELLINGTON, New Zealand (AP) — New Zealand students protesting the Iraq war offered a reward to anyone who carries out a citizen's arrest of Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice during her visit to the country Friday.
The Auckland University Students' Association is seeking Rice's arrest for her role in "overseeing the illegal invasion and continued occupation" of Iraq, Association President David Do said. The group is offering a $3,700 reward.
Rice is making her first trip to New Zealand after attending a Southeast Asian security forum in Singapore. She is scheduled to arrive from Australia late Friday and fly out early Sunday.
U.S. officials traveling with her said that they were aware of the threat but that it won't affect Rice's plans.
But police in Auckland, New Zealand's biggest city, warned that "anyone who attempts to penetrate the police lines of security around the secretary will not be allowed to follow through with their plan."
District Commander Superintendent Brett England said "the consequences of such a security threat could be very serious indeed."
On Saturday, Rice will hold talks with Prime Minister Helen Clark and Foreign Minister Winston Peters, meet with business leaders and attend an official dinner.
Rice is due to fly to Samoa early Sunday for meetings with South Pacific foreign ministers, seen by observers as an important event for the South Pacific region — an area where the U.S. has pledged to strengthen its level of engagement.
