Pope Francis yesterday ordered Bishop Gerhard Ludwig Mueller, head of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, which is the office that shapes and enforces policy for the Roman Catholic Church, to take "act decisively" in sex abuse cases.
Francis said the Roman Catholic Church "credibility was on the line." It was an extraordinary public statement, however, not everyone was impressed. One group essentially said "it's easy to talk the talk, the church has to walk the walk."
"Big deal. Actions speak louder than words. And one of the first actions Pope Francis took was to visit perhaps the most high-profile corrupt prelate on the planet, Cardinal Bernard Law, who remains a powerful church official despite having been drummed out of Boston for hiding and enabling crimes by hundreds of child molesting clerics," said Barbara Dorris, an official of SNAP, the Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests,
James Post, a professor at Boston University's School of Management who teaches corporate governance, accountability and ethic and who is also a founder of, and serves as an advisor to, Voice of the Faithful, a nationwide lay organization in the United States pushing for church reform, described the mandate to Mueller as "strongly symbolic" but one which should "be translated into forceful enforcement" of the policy.
This "may be a first step toward action and a test of whether the curia, the Vatican's notorious bureaucracy, will blunt the new pontiff's instruction," Post said. Some of those involved in protecting perpetrators "are almost certainly members of the curia," and it may well boil down to whether Francis has the skill and drive "to weed them out," Post said in a separate statement.

In Shiner, Texas, there’s little doubt among residents that a 23-year-old man who reportedly killed a man he found molesting his 5-year-old daughter in a horse barn should be hailed as a hero, not denounced as a criminal.
Yet some legal experts question why the father hasn’t yet been arrested and charged with murder, saying vigilante justice, no matter how the circumstances come about, can’t be tolerated in a civil society.
A Texas grand jury will have to deal with those questions next week as it takes a deeper look at the circumstances of the killing, and whether the father was justified in hitting the man so hard with his fists that he died.
In most jurisdictions, according to “Criminal Law,” a widely used textbook, the use of fists in defense if there are no other weapons present is automatically an example of reasonable force. But in this case, were emotions an extenuating circumstance that caused the angry dad to go too far? More broadly, when is a person in a defensive fight required to stop?
“Assuming it’s true that this guy was molesting the daughter … he would then have the right to defend her and hit him enough to have him stop,” James Harrington, director of the Texas Civil Rights Project, told Foxnews.com. “But you cannot summarily execute him, even though I can understand the anger he would have.”
He added: “The question is: When does it move beyond self-defense?”
And there’s another quirk to the case, suggests radio talk show host Geraldo Rivera, a lawyer.
“If he had a weapon and he used it to stop a sexual assault, he would not be indicted, but, ironically, the fact that he didn’t have a weapon leaves him more legally vulnerable than otherwise he would be,” Mr. Rivera told Bill O’Reilly Friday on Fox News. “In this case, you grab him off, now you’ve stopped the sexual assault, but now what are you doing? At what point does prevention of the sex assault become revenge, the implementation of vigilante justice?”
So far, the court of public opinion has stood steadfastly behind the father.
“Any father would have done that," Michael James Veit, a neighbor, told CNN on Thursday. "Everybody is saying the father is justified."
The killing happened last Saturday, according to Lacava County Sheriff Micah Harmon, after the man’s daughter had gone to a barn to feed the family’s chickens, and then began screaming.
When the father ran to investigate, he found a man described as a family acquaintance, a horse groomer, sexually abusing the girl. Police have not released any names, in part to protect the girl’s identity, and, in the case of the man who was killed, because they have not yet located his relatives in Mexico.
According to the county coroner, the man died of blunt force trauma to the head and neck. Eyewitnesses arrived to see the alleged molester already on the ground, not moving. The girl was taken to a hospital, where she was treated and released for minor injuries.
While police continue to investigate, they have so far found no reason to disbelieve the man’s story. The dad “had remorse,” says Sheriff Harmon. “It wasn’t his intent [to kill anybody]. He was protecting his daughter and doing what he thought he had to do to protect his daughter.”
Despite the dad’s potential legal liability, Rivera said, most American jurors – given the facts as known at the moment – would agree with Harmon.

Director Andrew Jarecki originally set out to create a documentary profiling children's entertainers in New York, but his focus changed he researched David Friedman, a clown who performed at kid's birthday parties. After Jarecki learned that David's father and brother had been convicted of child sexual abuse, his documentary gradually became a portrait of David's family, now known as "Capturing the Friedmans" (2003). Combining interviews from the family and children involved with family footage shot by David Friedman during the investigation, Jarecki crafted a balanced look at a compelling and complicated case. "Vanguard" correspondent Christof Putzel and screenwriter Diablo Cody explain why "Capturing the Friedmans" is so effective and deserves to be No. 20 on the "50 Documentaries to See Before You Die" countdown.
Renowned documentarian Morgan Spurlock hosts "50 Documentaries To See Before You Die," a celebration of the most remarkable and moving documentaries released in the past 25 years. It examines how the documentary feature has evolved into an increasingly popular genre, becoming a major box office draw and impacting contemporary American culture in ways never seen before.
"50 Documentaries To See Before You Die" airs Tuesdays at 9/8c throughout August on Current TV.

Personal experience and documentary of child molestation by radio broadcaster, DJ Mona-Lisa. Child molestation is a worldwide dilemma that often goes unnoticed by most parents and guardians. Sadly parents are often guilty of molesting their own children; close relatives unfortunately are also untrustworthy. If you or someone you know is a victim of child molestation report it to the rightful authorities. Child molestation is a worldwide criminal offense that is punishable by imprisonment. Despite the above emphasis, laws have failed to protect society from sex offenders who has a history of sexually assaulting children then receive court ordered treatment while serving time in prison. Upon release, child offenders may be listed in community directories yet "strike" again. Many crimes goes unpunished as children are often "silenced" and threatened by their sex offenders. Child molesters are often people in respectable positions such as teachers, pastors, priest, and doctors; they are also people that are truly trusted by parent and children including neighbors, baby sitters, and rather close relatives. Victims of child molestation are affected for a lifetime as they struggle to find themselves: Watch (DJ Mona-Lisa (Why Did You Touch Me There) http://youtu.be/iAFcmlbImx8Personal experience and documentary of child molestation by radio broadcaster, DJ... more

SACRAMENTO (KABC) -- Certain child molesters in California would be sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole under a bill lawmakers have sent to Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger.
The bill passed unanimously Monday in the state Assembly.
It was named after 17-year-old Chelsea King, who was murdered in a San Diego County park this year. A convicted child molester pleaded guilty to raping and killing King and 14-year-old Amber Dubois.
Republican Assemblyman Nathan Fletcher of San Diego, the bill's author, says the legislation is an attempt to remove some evil from the streets of California.

Five men from the same family are in custody in a stunning child sex crimes case in Missouri — and cadaver dogs are now being used in a hunt for possible bodies of victims, a local news reports.
Police are searching a patch of land on a farm property Wednesday near Bates City, Mo., a day after the men were charged with committing sex crimes against children, according to a local news channel.
Charged with multiple counts of child rape are 77-year-old Burrell Edward Mohler Sr. and his son Burrell Edward Mohler Jr., 53, both of Independence, Mo., along with 48-year-old Jared Leroy Mohler of Columbia, Mo.
David A. Mohler, 52, of Lamoni, Iowa, was charged with one count of child rape, and Roland Neil Mohler, 47, of Bates City, Mo., is accused of using a child in a sexual performance — a felony. The relationships of Jared, David and Roland Mohler to Burrell Mohler Sr. and Burrell Mohler Jr. weren't immediately known.
The crimes allegedly were committed from the late 1980s until the mid-1990s.
The elder Burrell Mohler is accused of drugging and forcibly raping a child under 12 and using a child in a sexual performance. His son is charged with sexual assault of a child under 14 and using a child in a sexual performance.
It wasn't clear how many young victims there allegedly were. All five men are being held behind bars without bond.
A press conference will be held Wednesday to discuss more details of the case.Five men from the same family are in custody in a stunning child sex crimes case in... more

The Vermont House and Senate voted to override the gubernatorial veto on same-sex marriage. Vermont is officially the first state in the country to legalize same-sex marriage through the legislative process and the fourth state in the country to recognize same-sex marriage. Massachusetts, Connecticut, Iowa, and Vermont legalized same-sex marriage. New York recognizes marriages from these states, Canada, and the 18,000 California same-marriages that were licensed before Prop 8 passed.
***UPDATE: HRC’s David Smith, vice president of programs, just sent out this congratulatory statement to the HRC family:
Just moments ago, Vermont representatives joined their colleagues in the State Senate in voting to override the governor’s veto and make Vermont the first state in the Union to enact marriage equality through the legislative process. Lesbian and gay couples can begin marrying in the Green Mountain State on September 1.
As with most legislative victories, this one did not happen overnight. In fact, today’s votes are the result of years of work. At the Human Rights Campaign, we sent several action alerts and phoned our members in Vermont more than once over the past weeks and months. And we’ve been having strategic conversations with leaders at the Vermont Freedom to Marry Task Force since last year. Perhaps most significantly, our national field director Marty Rouse has travelled to Vermont several times this year and has been on the ground since yesterday calling in every chit he has from his many years helping elect Democrats to the State Senate and House. We are inspired by the many courageous lawmakers who stood their ground today and stood for equality, and we are proud that our own Marty Rouse helped elect so many of those lawmakers during their first campaigns for office. It is certainly no exaggeration to say that today’s result would not have been possible without Marty’s efforts.
We will soon go to the roof (twice in one week!) to hang the flag of another state that recognizes that all loving and committed couples should be treated equally. The Vermont House and Senate voted to override the gubernatorial veto on same-sex... more
