Deadline is reporting that filming on the third film in the franchise that began with Harold & Kumar Go to White Castle will begin filming by summer, with New Line about to hire a director and considering making the movie 3-D. And since the duo has already gotten high with W. in Harold & Kumar Escape from Guantanamo Bay, it’s a pretty solid bet that Santa and the boys will be toking up in the third movie, which will be a “holiday” flick for release in 2011 or 2012.

Fresh off of hosting the Tonys last night, Neil Patrick Harris has lined-up roles in two new feature film projects. One of them is the starring role in the indie film The Best and the Brightest and the other is a supporting role in CBS Films' horror drama Beastly. Harris was last seen on the big screen in Harold & Kumar Escape from Guantanamo Bay last year and also appeared in Joss Whedon's "Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog." NPH will shoot both while on his summer hiatus from "How I Met Your Mother" with The Best and the Brightest coming first. In my old neighborhood of Central Square in Cambridge, MA, there's a falafel joint that used to be a White Castle. While some might wring their hands at the notion of a bastion of the oldest burger chain in the US being supplanted by cuisine from the Middle East, I embrace this as a manifestation of the Great American Melting Pot that made America... uhmmm... Great. And Melty.
It's in this same spirit of a White Castle location being the site of transformation and enrichment through the American immigrant experience that I embrace and rejoice in the recent assignment of actor Kal Penn --
Kumar himself from Harold & Kumar Go to White Castle and Harold & Kumar Escape from Guantanamo Bay -- to the Obama administration's Office of Public Liaison. As associate director there, according to The LA Times, he'll be doing "outreach to young people, arts professionals and the Asian American community."
