The weather and climate have a profound influence on our lives everywhere. Lives and livelihoods are disrupted in the path of storms and rising sea levels, retreating glaciers, intensifying droughts and floods, and food and water scarcity.
The Health and Climate Foundation has put together a contemporary art project that explores that relationship between climate and society.
Coinciding with the World Climate Conference 3 in Geneva, which runs from 31 August—4 September 2009, the exhibition is intended to provoke us to think about how we are affected by the environment, how it transforms us, and how we live with it.The weather and climate have a profound influence on our lives everywhere. "U.S. artists are preparing for the first big group exhibition of American art in Cuba since the 1980s in what they hope is a harbinger of better relations between the two countries.
The work of more than 30 artists representing New York City's Chelsea district will be displayed March 28 through May 17 at Havana's Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes in an exhibit called "Chelsea Visits Havana."
U.S. curator Alberto Magnan said on Tuesday the exposition's purpose was to give Cubans a chance to see American art, little of which has made its way to the Communist-run island during the past 50 years of hostilities between the United States and Cuba.
"Art has always been a bridge to culture, and if this is any sign of things to come, it's a great first step," said Magnan, a Cuban-American and Chelsea art gallery owner."

Few artists can say they created a painting while free falling from an airplane. For 25-year-old action artist Matt Cheney, it’s all in a day’s work. Though it may seem unconventional, action sports are as much a form of artistic expression as they are competitive sports. And Cheney has further explored the idea of action sports as art by integrating activities like snowboarding, skateboarding and skydiving with oil painting. Here’s how…
Cheney’s action art is inspired by abstract painters like Jackson Pollock and Saburo Murakami who defined action painting during the abstract expressionist movement of the Post WWII era. Intrigued by the performative nature of action painting, Cheney uses various action sports (which he loves) to create the movement behind his work. Working with a crew of several people, Cheney uses video cameras and still photography to document the visual experience of his paintings. “The whole process for how it’s done, from the oil paints to mixing the pigments and thinking about the composition, is free spirited and spontaneous. I love the idea of preserving a moment in time.” For his senior project at the Art Institute of Boston, Cheney built a halfpipe in a studio and created paintings like Pink on Black while skating up and down the halfpipe.

So many of us move to San Francisco as adults and move away again to start families. Still, San Francisco has thousands of children growing up here. As teenagers, they have a unique perspective that needs to be heard.
Todd Berman, artist-in-residence and acting librarian, will be displaying a series of collaborative paintings of the city. Berman has been creating art collaboratively with San Francisco residents for years now. His process is simple – he asks people at an event or on the street to express themselves on a small piece of paper, then he collages those papers into a larger painting.
