McDonald's Corp. plans to raise menu prices to blunt higher costs, including what would be its first such increase in the U.S. in more than a year—a time when the burger chain's sales have thrived amid lower prices.
The company expects to increase prices in the U.S. and Europe amid projections that commodity costs will rise between 2% and 3% in 2011, Chief Financial Officer Peter Bensen said Thursday during a conference call after McDonald's reported a 10% increase in third-quarter earnings and added that October sales appear strong.

ATHENS (Reuters) - Greek anarchists stormed a supermarket on Thursday and handed out food for free in the latest of a wave of raids provoked by soaring consumer prices.
About 20 unarmed people, mostly wearing black hoods, carried out the midday robbery in the northern city of Thesaaloniki, police said.
Local media have labeled the raiders "Robin Hoods" following previous raids.
They take only packets of pasta, rice and cartons of milk which they drop in the middle of the street for people to collect, a police official said.
"They have never stolen money or hurt anyone. They ask people to remain calm but use ambush tactics, jumping over cash desks," he said.
"When they attack without hoods, people are surprised to see that they are mostly women."

The Asian Development Bank (ADB) has announced emergency funding to help poor countries struggling with rising food costs. The bank said at its annual meeting in Madrid, the Spanish capital, today that food prices could keep rising and stifle economic growth in the region. Haruhiko Kuroda, the bank’s president, said: "The cheap food era may be over." The ADB said new aid will come in the form of soft loans for the governments of countries hardest hit by the global food crisis, such as Bangladesh.
In Asia rice prices have almost tripled this year alone. Financial speculators, rising populations, floods, droughts, increased demand from developing countries, and removing crops from the food chain to produce biofuels have been cited as factors.
