Could Viagra make you, ahem, hard of hearing? Researchers are uncovering evidence that it and other anti-impotence drugs may do just that. The FDA has been warning about possible hearing complications associated with anti-impotence medicine since 2007, but two new reports are raising concerns. UK researchers who surveyed drug watchdogs around the world uncovered 47 cases of sudden hearing loss linked to Viagra and related drugs. Another 223 possible reports from the United States had to be excluded because of lack of details, reports the Daily Mail.
Meanwhile, Reuters reports that a new US study finds that taking Viagra could double one's chance of experiencing hearing loss. It found that one in three men over 40 who took the drug had hearing loss; of those not taking it, only one in six did. Scientists say they are not sure how anti-impotence medicine could affect hearing, but suspect a chain of chemical reactions caused by the drugs could be harming the inner ear. A spokesman for Britain's drug regulator says Viagra-related hearing loss complaints are rare, and notes that causality hasn't been proven.Could Viagra make you, ahem, hard of hearing? About Prescription4Love.com:
Ricky Durham’s brother Keith was the inspiration for Prescription4Love. Keith battled Crohn’s Disease (under IBD) and at times weighed between 75-125 lbs. His normal weight was around 150 lbs. It was difficult for him to disclose his disease to anyone, especially the reality of using a colostomy bag. Wanting to help his brother connect with others, especially others with the same illness, Ricky Durham created Prescription4Love. Although Keith passed away July 15, 2004, he was pleased with the work his brother had begun. Now 6 years later, Prescription4Love has helped over 8,000 people find love and friendship.
Prescription4Love and Ricky Durham are featured in Daryn Kagan’s (from CNN) new book “What’s Possible: 50 True Stories of People Who Dared to Dream They Could Make a Difference”.

A woman in her 20s has been diagnosed with a broken ear drum apparently kissing her boyfriend, reports Shanghaiist. Doctors have suggested that as the inner ear is linked to the mouth, a strong kiss may have caused an imbalance in air pressure between the two inner ears and lead to a broken ear drum.

Millions of youngsters across Europe could suffer permanent hearing loss after five years if they listen to MP3 players at too high a volume for more than five hours a week, EU scientists warned Monday.
The scientists' study, requested by the European Commission, attacked the concept of "leisure noise," saying children and teenagers should be protected from increasingly high sound levels, with loud mobile phones also coming in for criticism.
"There has been increasing concern about exposure from the new generation of personal music players which can reproduce sounds at very high volumes without loss of quality," the Commission, the EU's executive arm, said in a statement.
"Risk for hearing damage depends on sound level and exposure time," it said. More and more young people were exposed to the significant threat that leisure noise posed to hearing, it said.
Commission experts estimate that between 50 and 100 million people listen to portable music players on a daily basis.

Now this probably won't come as a shock to you, but loud music at festivals damages your hearing!
The Royal National Institute for Deaf People (RNID) has conducted a survey of over 2000 festival-goers from Leeds, Reading, Glastonbury, Latitude and Rise festivals, asking them if they believed listening to loud music at festivals had affected their hearing.
Over 50% of festival revellers admitted that the music had damaged their hearing, with the majority (84%) saying they had 'experienced dullness of hearing or ringing' in their ears as well. 50% also admitted that they had experienced pain in their ears whilst listening to loud music but only just over 15% of them had gone about trying to protect their hearing.
The RNID has warned that if party-goers continue to listen to music at such volume, then they risk damaging their hearing permanently.
The RNID's campaign, Don't Lose the Music, aims to raise awareness of the dangers of listening to loud music. Now this probably won't come as a shock to you, but loud music at festivals... more

As if heart failure isn't enough, according to research, there is a link between how much, and the duration somebody smokes for, and their chances of suffering deafness.
The cross-European study which focussed on a total of 4,083 men and women (aged between 53 and 67) also discovered a link between people with a higher BMI and those more susceptible to suffering hearing loss.

If you're a little hard of hearing and a little self-conscious about looking good, some Chinese designers might have just made your day.
Kwang-seok Jeong, Min-hee Kim and Hyun-joong Kim have conceptualized a pair of rings, ingeniously tilled the 'Vibering' that "would be fitted with sound detection sensors that would alert the wearer about honking cars, their distance and position from the wearer through vibration."
