This morning I read an article on the world’s youngest grandmother, who had her first child at twelve and her first grandbaby at twenty-three:
“Mum-of-two Rifca Stanescu was 12 when she had her first child Maria.
She urged the girl not to follow her example – but Maria gave birth to son Ion while only 11.”
We have to consider the source – this was reported by British tabloid The Sun – but to be frank, I’m not very concerned about Ms. Stanescu, her children, or her grandchildren. Romanian women typically marry quite young, with a mean age of twenty-three. I’m more concerned about the people commenting on this news, all over the web...

French President Nicolas Sarkozy has said he and other EU heads of state were "shocked" by comparisons between France's removal of Roma (Gypsies) and the plight of Gypsies during WWII.
EU Justice Commissioner Viviane Reding had previously appeared to compare France's actions to persecutions in Nazi-occupied France.

France has begun dismantling illegal Roma (Gypsy) camps following a presidential order for hundreds of such camps to be removed.
On Friday, about 100 people were moved on after police emptied a camp in the central city of Saint-Etienne.
The Roma had been living there in makeshift shelters and tents since May.
It was the first such move since President Nicolas Sarkozy announced a week ago plans to shut 300 illegal camps within the next three months.
Mr Sarkozy also said members of the Roma community who had committed public order offences would be deported immediately.

Racism can become part of a nation in a very short time, as seen clearly in the Italy of those days. It happens simply with the rapid spread of intolerance through the political world and the media. Few years of massive propaganda against immigrants were enough to make racism commonplace and normal . It's the case then to remember the huge differences between reality and prejudices which have become common knowledge.

Anyone who studied history has asked himself how it was possible that Germany and its allies during the Second World War committed an abomination as the Holocaust. Millions of people killed because they were considered "different": Jews, Gypsies, homosexuals, communists, opponents. To understand that just look at what is happening today in Italy. While an occasional newspaper article rhetorically asks whether Italians are racists in our country now there are people who quietly incite to genocide.

Art. 27 of the Italian Constitution, already unheeded in the part saying that penalties should recover detainees and cannot consist in treatments contrary to human dignity, is largely ignored in our country also in the first paragraph that says "Criminal responsibility is personal". Indeed, the concept applies only if the suspect of a crime is a "normal" Italian, while does not apply if it's an immigrant, let alone if it's a Romani.

BUCHAREST, Romania - At first, fans politely applauded the Roma performers sharing a stage with Madonna. Then the pop star condemned widespread discrimination against Roma, or Gypsies — and the cheers gave way to jeers.
The sharp mood change that swept the crowd of 60,000, who had packed a park for Wednesday night's concert, underscores how prejudice against Gypsies remains deeply entrenched across Eastern Europe.
Despite long-standing efforts to stamp out rampant bias, human rights advocates say Roma probably suffer more humiliation and endure more discrimination than any other people group on the continent.
Sometimes, it can be deadly: In neighboring Hungary, six Roma have been killed and several wounded in a recent series of apparently racially motivated attacks targeting small countryside villages predominantly settled by Gypsies.
"There is generally widespread resentment against Gypsies in Eastern Europe. They have historically been the underdog," Radu Motoc, an official with the Soros Foundation Romania, said Thursday.
Roma, or Gypsies, are a nomadic ethnic group believed to have their roots in the Indian subcontinent. They live mostly in southern and eastern Europe, but hundreds of thousands have migrated west over the past few decades in search of jobs and better living conditions.
Romania has the largest number of Roma in the region. Some say the population could be as high as 2 million, although official data put it at 500,000.
Until the 19th century, Romanian Gypsies were slaves, and they've gotten a mixed response ever since: While discrimination is widespread, many East Europeans are enthusiastic about Gypsy music and dance, which they embrace as part of the region's cultural heritage.
That explains why the Roma musicians and a dancer who had briefly joined Madonna onstage got enthusiastic applause. And it also may explain why some in the crowd turned on Madonna when she paused during the two-hour show — a stop on her worldwide "Sticky and Sweet" tour — to touch on their plight.
"It has been brought to my attention ... that there is a lot of discrimination against Romanies and Gypsies in general in Eastern Europe," she said. "It made me feel very sad."
Thousands booed and jeered her.
A few cheered when she added: "We don't believe in discrimination ... we believe in freedom and equal rights for everyone." But she got more boos when she mentioned discrimination against homosexuals and others.
"I jeered her because it seemed false what she was telling us. What business does she have telling us these things?" said Ionut Dinu, 23.

What business does she have? The same freakin' business the entire world felt it had to tell America who to vote for during the election.
God...Europeans can be such hypocrites. Let alone the fact they are repeating history just a little to close to actual events...all this talk about how great it is America is moving forward with a BLACK President and Europe is moving backwards with how they treat people....proving, yet again, that they can't do as they claim is right.BUCHAREST, Romania - At first, fans politely applauded the Roma performers sharing a... more

This is how Gypsies have spontaneous celebrations, with family and friends all joining in. Here we even see an Arab musician and a Jewish musician joining in the fun. I have often been in such occasions, both in caravans and in houses, in restaurants, outside by a camp-fire, or even on the street. That's how I best love to celebrate!
I have to edit some of the video footage I have made of one or two such occasions in which some of my many Gypsy friends were playing, make a few of pods, and upload them to Current.
I post this in celebration of Obama's victory.
Enjoy!

"Thousands of Roma Gypsy children and adults will be fingerprinted from Sunday in the Italian capital, Rome, despite strong criticism from European and religious organisations.
The fingerprinting and identification process will be coordinated with the Red Cross and 'cultural mediators' and the Roma will receive a sanitary card, allowing them access to Italy's social and health services.
Gypsy children, whose parents keep them out of school and send them to beg on the streets would lose custody of their children, under the plan announced by Maroni.
Of the 150,000 Roma Gypsies who live in Italy, about 70,000 have Italian citizenship. Many Roma Gypsies come from Romania."

Silvio Berlusconi's new rightwing cabinet, at its first meeting in Naples yesterday, endorsed a package of tough measures aimed at Gypsies and clandestine immigrants. In a move that appeared certain to cause controversy, the interior minister, Roberto Maroni, said local authorities would be empowered to check on the living conditions of citizens from other EU nations before granting them right of residence.
The measure appeared to be aimed at Roma living in encampments, and particularly at the estimated 50,000 Romanian Gypsies who have entered Italy in recent years and who are being blamed for much of the recent rise in crime rates.
The cabinet also decided to make unauthorised entry into Italy a crime.
The measures will make it easier to expel foreigners, including EU citizens, who are convicted of offences, a move that could bring the Berlusconi government into conflict with Brussels if it is judged to breach European law on freedom of movement within the EU.Silvio Berlusconi's new rightwing cabinet, at its first meeting in Naples... more

The Gypsies of Rome are being pushed out of the shadows - out of their homes - and into a spotlight they have never wanted. With immigration from Romania soaring in Italy in the last few years, concerns for security have increased in the Eternal City. Local government is reacting to crime bulldozing shantytowns than in the last few months have attacked the spine of the city, the river Tiber. We followed the destiny of different Roma at a very uncertain time for their community. The Gypsies of Rome are being pushed out of the shadows - out of their homes - and... more
