In an unprecedented proliferation of public spying, government is casting its watchful eye on millions of ordinary Americans through largely unregulated surveillance cameras trained on public spaces throughout the nation.
A Long Island town is using a new tool to find you without ever setting foot on your property.
Using Google Earth images Riverhead’s Chief Building Inspector Leroy Barnes Jr. eyeballed properties on the Internet and identified those with pools, then compared the list to records of homes with pool permits.
Barnes said he targeted pools – after discussions with town leaders – because of safety concerns. Without permits and the required inspections, pools can be hazards, he said, because there’s no way to tell whether fencing, electric and plumbing work for such pools meets code and state safety regulations.
“Pool safety has always been my concern,” said Barnes, who acknowledged that “a lot of people don’t like the idea of an eye in the sky.”
This has raised concerns with privacy advocates as it may be the first use of Google Earth for such a purpose. A Google representative told Newsday she didn’t know of any specific example of Google Earth being used elsewhere as it has been in Riverhead, and did not respond specifically to whether the company had any concerns about how the town used the service.

This is the only route left for the news media. Just wonder how it will affect sites like Current.
NEW YORK, Feb 26 (Reuters) - Cablevision Systems Corp (CVC.N) plans to charge online readers of its Newsday newspaper, a move that would make it one of the first large U.S. papers to reverse a trend toward free Web readership.
Newsday, which covers the New York suburb of Long Island, was bought by Cablevision in a $650 million deal last May that was widely criticized on Wall Street as a puzzling move into a troubled newspaper market.
Cablevision had to write down Newsday's value by $402 million on Thursday, pushing its fourth-quarter results to a loss, as U.S. print advertising sales and circulation have dropped with more readers seeking free news on the Web.
But Cablevision Chief Operating officer Tom Rutledge said the cable TV company was aware of the difficulties faced by the traditional newspaper business.
"Our goal was and is to use our electronic network assets and subscriber relationships to transform the way news is distributed," he said on a conference call with analysts. This is the only route left for the news media. Just wonder how it will affect sites... more

News Corp., the media conglomerate controlled by Rupert Murdoch, has withdrawn its bid to purchase the Long Island paper Newsday, a News Corp. spokeswoman said Saturday.
The decision to revoke the offer came just days after Murdoch confidently predicted he would clinch a deal to buy the newspaper within a week.
News Corp. had offered about $580 million for the daily newspaper, one of the country's biggest, but it was competing against rival bids from Cablevision Systems Corp. and New York Daily News owner Mortimer Zuckerman. Cablevision had reportedly made an offer of $650 million for the paper, now owned by the Tribune Co.
News Corp. spokeswoman Teri Everett didn't immediately elaborate on why the company revoked its earlier offer, but she hinted at the potentially higher price tag, saying, "It became uneconomical for us to continue." Murdoch had indicated earlier that he wouldn't raise his bid.
A deal would have made News Corp. an even bigger giant in New York media. The company already owns The Wall Street Journal and the New York Post, plus two area television stations.News Corp., the media conglomerate controlled by Rupert Murdoch, has withdrawn its bid... more

The kingpin of Fox News "Noise", MySpace, and The Wall Street Journal, just to name a few, has promised that he will have a deal with Newsday finished within the week. Newsday is Long Island, NY's largest paper, and the Murdoch Empire expects that it's acquisition will add another $100 million to the coffers.
As if the New York media market wasn't monopolized enough, this purchase would put Murdoch in control of three of the largest newspapers in New York, leaving only the New York Times, and the Daily News outside of his grasp. Scary? Maybe just a little.
