The Thanksgiving holiday holds a religious theme for many, but for some it’s in a way that seems quite the opposite of their religion.
Like yesterday’s celebration, for example. Rightwing media told a ridiculous tale of Muslim terrorists attempting to denigrate the country, and by imposing their own terrorist-like religion upon the holiday.
It started with an opinion piece written by Pamela Geller on Monday’s “American Thinker” site.
Citing a “citizen activist” as her source, Geller claimed the Butterball company, a chief provider of the turkey traditional enjoyed for Thanksgiving meals, had produced its birds to be sold in the U.S. in a halal format. (And in case you don’t know, “halal” is a dietary guideline practiced by Muslims.)
Already known to be an anti-Muslim zealot, Geller declared this to be a secretive “scandal” pulled by Butterball.
“Non-Muslims in America and Europe don’t deserve to have halal turkey forced upon them in this way, without their knowledge or consent,” Geller wrote.
Even worse, she implied that Butterball was attempting to sneakily convert its American consumers to the Islamic faith. “Infidel Americans are unwittingly going to be serving halal turkeys to their families this Thursday. … Halal turkey…is just the opposite of what Thanksgiving represents,” Geller claimed, calling for a boycott of Butterball products.
She even created a “Boycott Butterball Turkey” page on facebook. And the story got taken from there all over the rightwing side of the worldwide web.
Islamophobic sites such as Jihad Watch (“You’re eating halal”), Bare Naked Islam (“WARNING!”), and Now the End Begins (“Butterball Turkeys Support Islamic Terrorism”) promoted the rumor. From there it went to conservamedia The Blaze (“Islamic Butterball?”). Two other “Boycott Butterball” pages made it to facebook, as well (1 and 2).
And on Wednesday, the day before Thanksgiving, it wound up on Bryan Fischer’s radio show on the American Family Network.

For all the seafood lovers out there the recent London launch of the CrustaStun – a device that “humanely” kills lobsters with a single jolt of electricity rather than by boiling them alive – is a welcome device, but how are other animals we enjoy eating killed these days?
UK slaughter methods
The main governing body of all slaughter of animals in the UJ is the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA). They set the rules for what is and what isn’t legal when it comes to killing animals for human consumption. Below are the most common ways of slaughter animals in the UK:
Captive-bolt stunning
Made famous by Javier Bardem’s hitman in No Country For Old Men, this lethal gun is pointed towards the back of the head of the animal, and when fired it causes immediate unconsciousness through brain trauma. Most cattle, sheep and goats are killed in this way. After being stunned the animal is subjected to exsanguination, commonly known as “bleeding out” by having its jugular vein, carotid artery, and trachea cut by a knife. When properly performed the animal’s blood flow freely and it dies within a few minutes.
Electrical stunning
Pigs and poultry are sometimes killed through electrical stunning. The stunning is done by sending an electrical current through the brain or heart of the animal before slaughter. If the current passes through the brain it induces an immediate but non-fatal general convulsion that produces unconsciousness. Current passing through the heart produces an immediate cardiac arrest that also leads shortly to unconsciousness and death. The animal is then bleed out and dies through loss of blood. Electrical stunning has proved difficult with chickens as it is easy to over-stun them, this can lead bone fractures or electrocution, which prevents the animal from bleeding out properly and negatively affects the quality of the meat.
Controlled Atmosphere stunning
On of the most common ways to slaughter pigs and birds are by gassing them. If successfully performs this method doesn’t just stun the animals it kills them. Pigs are usually gassed in groups in special chambers for up to two minutes, and the gas used is carbon dioxide. Before bleeding them a sample of gassed pigs are pricked on the nose with a needle, if the pigs move their heads or show any response to the prick, they may recover very quickly so it is very important that the gas levels are high (around 90%) to reduce the chances of recovery. Birds are killed by gas mixtures designed to induce loss of consciousness without undue distress. Birds can in some systems be placed in the gas chamber whilst they are still in their crates, which reduce the amount of handling stress. They must be dead by the time they are shackled to prevent the pain of shackles and the distress of inversion on the poultry line. Another advantage over electrical stunning is that the birds do not suffer pre-stun shocks and carcases have less broken bones and haemorrhaging.
Shechita (Jewish) slaughter
In order to ensure that slaughtered animals are up to the strict Kosher standards animals must not be ill or harmed before being killed. Animals are slaughtered by having their trachea, oesophagus, carotid arteries and jugular veins cut using an extremely sharp blade (chalef), and allowing the blood to drain out. Because the animal can’t be harmed prior to being killed the animals are not stunned to become unconscious like in common British slaughter. The person performing the slaughter has to be a Shochet (ritual slaughterer), a religious Jew who is duly licensed and trained.
Dhabihah (Muslim) slaughter
To make the meat Halal the Muslim butcher must slaughter the animal by a swift, deep incision with a sharp knife on the neck, cutting the jugular veins and carotid arteries of both sides but leaving the spinal cord intact. The slaughter must be performed by an adult Muslim, and some believe the name and praise of Allah must be read before sacrificing the animal. Some Halal meat is pre-stunned before slaughter but as a large number of animals are not pre-stunned both Muslim and Jewish slaughter procedures have come under fire for causing animals a “unnecessary” amount of suffering and distress before being killed.

A Brief Illustrated Guide to Understanding Islam
The first chapter, Some Evidence for the Truth of Islam, answers some important questions which some people ask:
* Is the Quran truly the literal word of God, revealed by Him?
* Is Muhammad 1 truly a prophet sent by God?
* Is Islam truly a religion from God?
In this chapter, six kinds of evidence are mentioned:
1) The Scientific Miracles in the Holy Quran: This section discusses (with illustrations) some recently discovered scientific facts mentioned in the Holy Quran, which was revealed fourteen centuries ago.
2) The Great Challenge to Produce One Chapter Like the Chapters of the Holy Quran: In the Quran, God challenged all human beings to produce a single chapter like the chapters of the Quran. Ever since the Quran was revealed, fourteen centuries ago, until this day, no one has been able to meet this challenge, even though the smallest chapter in the Quran (Chapter 108) is only ten words.
3) Biblical Prophecies on the Advent of Muhammad , the Prophet of Islam: In this section, some of the Biblical prophecies on the advent of the Prophet Muhammad are discussed.
4) The Verses in the Quran That Mention Future Events Which Later Came to Pass: The Quran mentioned future events which later came to pass, for example, the victory of the Romans over the Persians.
5) Miracles Performed by the Prophet Muhammad : Many miracles were performed by the Prophet Muhammad . These miracles were witnessed by many people.
6) The Simple Life of Muhammad : This clearly indicates that Muhammad was not a false prophet who claimed prophethood to attain material gains, greatness, or power.
From these six kinds of evidence, we conclude that:
* The Quran must be the literal word of God, revealed by Him.
* Muhammad is truly a prophet sent by God.
* Islam is truly a religion from God.
If we would like to know if a religion is true or false, we should not depend on our emotions, feelings, or traditions. Rather, we should depend on our reason and intellect. When God sent the prophets, He supported them with miracles and evidence which proved that they were truly prophets sent by God and hence that the religion they came with is true.
The second chapter, Some Benefits of Islam, mentions some of the benefits that Islam provides for the individual, such as:
1) The Door to Eternal Paradise
2) Salvation from Hellfire
3) Real Happiness and Inner Peace
4) Forgiveness for All Previous Sins.
The third chapter, General Information on Islam, provides general information on Islam, corrects some misconceptions about it, and answers some commonly asked questions, such as:
* What does Islam say about terrorism?
* What is the status of women in Islam?

May I suggest to the seeker of truth do the following NINE STEPS for purification of the mind:
Clean their mind, their heart and their soul real good.
Clear away all the prejudices and biases.
Read a good translation of the meaning of the Holy Quran in a language that they can understand best.
Take some time.
Read and reflect.
Think and pray.
And keep on asking the One who created you in the first place, to guide you to the truth.
Keep this up for a few months. And be regular in it.
Above all, do not let others who are poisoned in their thinking influence you while your are in this state of "rebirth of the soul."
The rest is between you and the Almighty Lord of the Universe. If you truly love Him, then He already knows it and He will deal with each of us according to our hearts.
Peace to you and Guidance from Allah the One Almighty God, Creator and Sustainer of all that exists.
