This is a clip from the award winning documentary FIGHTER. FIGHTER was shot and directed by filmmaker Pericles Lewnes who traveled around with a group of Greco-Roman wrestlers looking to break into the new sport of Mixed Martial Arts starting in 1996.
Lewnes, a former wrestler, began the documentary because he always thought that wrestlers could compete well in the sport. He found out that an old acquaintance of his, Rico Chiapparelli, an NCAA and World Cup wrestling champion, had assembled a group of world class wrestlers to cross-train in striking and kickboxing to compete with fighters of other disciplines.
Lewnes slept on floors and wrestling mats as he traveled from gym to dojo with the team documenting what appears to be the only record of the early days of mixed martial arts.
Little did anyone know that one of the wrestlers that Chiapparelli was grooming and Lewnes was documenting, would become a living legend, a five time UFC champion... Randy "The Natural" Couture.
This is a short segment from the one hour documentary that features Couture.
FIGHTER takes an irreverent yet brutally honest look at the world of Reality fighters from their own perspective, through tournaments, training, and daily lives. FIGHTER deftly captures the skill, dedication, rivalry, camaraderie, and tremendous mutual respect.
