A festival involving the sacrifice of more than 300,000 animals is to begin despite facing international protests
Animal rights groups and activists including the actress Brigitte Bardot have condemned the event, which takes place every five years in the Nepalese village of Bariyarpur.
But Nepal's government says it will continue with the "centuries-old tradition" and will deploy armed police to keep the peace.
The religious festival is dedicated to Gadhimai, the Hindu goddess of power.
Mangal Chaudhary Tharu, a priest at the Gadhimai temple, said: "People have deep faith in the goddess and they believe that sacrificing animals will bring them good luck and prosperity for their families.
"I don't think the mood will be spoiled by the animal rights campaigners. They have the right to raise their concerns."
Ms Bardot has written to the Nepalese president urging him to cancel the ceremony.
She wrote: "Thousands of terrified buffaloes will have their heads cut off by drunken devotees.
"I have dedicated my life to protect animals and the best gift I could receive for this lifelong struggle would be the announcement of the stopping of ritual sacrifice."
Pressure group Animal Nepal claims the festival represents "extreme cruelty".
Its director Pramada Shah said the campaign to stop it had won strong support all over the world.
She added: "The idea of animal rights is very new here and people are so used to sacrifices, even well-educated people are resistant to change.
"There is a lot of work to be done here, but slowly, progress is being made."
The animals slaughtered will include buffaloes, birds, goats, sheep, pigs and rats.
Over a million people are expected to attend.

Incorruptibility is the property of a body — usually a human body — that does not decompose after death. Such a body is sometimes referred to as incorrupt or incorruptible (adjective) or as an incorruptible (noun).
Incorruptibility is seen as distinct from the good preservation of a body, or mummification. Incorruptible bodies are often said to have the Odour of Sanctity, a sweet smell.
The incorrupt bodies of these saints are simply a living witness or proof to the truth of the Catholic religion as the one true faith from God, who has confirmed the testimony of the Church in the great miracles he has worked through it's saints.

-Pecados contra la fe: ¿Crees en DIOS, q te ha creado y te ama? ¡As Cometido apostasía q es el rechazo total de la fe cristiana, criticando a los sacerdotes y demás miembros, rechazando recibir los sacramentos”bautismo,comunión,confirmación,eucaristía,confesarse,o matrimonio”?
-Pecados contra la esperanza: ¿Te has desesperado por problemas, ansiedades, dejando de confiar en DIOS?
-Pecados de presunción: ¿Presumes salvarte, sin la ayuda de DIOS o esperando obtener su perdón sin conversión, sin arrepentimiento?
-Pecados contra la caridad: ¿As sido ingrato y tibio para con DIOS y perezoso para orar, asistir o recogerte para hablar con Él?

Pecados de adivinación: As consultado con los muertos o practicas que desvelen el porvenir, de horóscopos, astrología, la quiromancia, interpretación de presagios, metafísica, magia o hechicería, asistir a curanderos?

¿As Tentado al DIOS? Sacrilegio: profanar los sacramentos, recibir el cuerpo de Cristo en pecado mortal.
2°Mandamiento: EL NOMBRE DEL SEÑOR ES SANTO
¿As prometido a otros en nombre de DIOS siendo infiel a esas promesas?
¿As blasfemado, con palabras de odio, de safio contra DIOS y contra la iglesia, los santos y cosa sagradas?

3°Mandamiento: GUARDARAS EL DIA DEL SEÑOR
-Precepto de la iglesia: El domingo y los demás días de fiesta de precepto, los fieles tienen la obligación de participar en la misa.
¿As faltado deliberadamente a esta obligación? Debes aconsejar a los demás cumplir este deber y no impedirle a nadie el asistir a misa.
4° Mandamiento: HONRARAS A TU PADRE Y A TU MADRE
Un hombre y una mujer unidos en matrimonio forman con sus hijos una familia “iglesia domestica”.
Deberes de los miembros de la familia. Deberes de los hijos:
-¿Respetas, amas y agradeces a tus padres por el don de la vida, su amor y su trabajo. Los obedeces con docilidad lo que te mandan a hacer ¿Salvo que sea moralmente malo.

5° Mandamiento: NO MATARAS
HABEIS OIDO QUE SE DIJO NO MATARAS, Y AQUEL QUE MATE SERA REO ANTE EL TRIBUNAL.PUES YO OS DIGO, TODO AQUEL QUE SE ENCOLERIZE CONTRA SU HERMANO, SERA REO ANTE EL TRIBUNAL.
¿As matado directa o indirectamente?

A sad commentary on society is we now seem to take religious scandals in stride. We see countless stories about unthinkable crimes committed by clergy and it barely phases anyone anymore. Is there some sort of trend here? How many events have to take place before the entire institution becomes suspect? Religion has been the main instigation for a large number of wars. Indeed it is the a huge part of the current wars we are currently dealing with. It's been the underlying factor in many multiple murders, serial murders and mass suicides. How many times have you seen a story about a parent doing some horrific evil to their own children only to find they were devoutly religious and claimed to be carrying out some divine prophecy?
I whole heartedly believe in faith. I'm not sure science and logic can account for all things at all times. A lot of people have trouble dealing with the randomness of reality. Sometimes stuff just happens. There's no rhyme nor reason for an unexpected loss at times, yet we search for some reason even divine solace at some point. I can see where faith comes in handy in a similar situation but faith and religion are entirely different things. Faith can be in anything. You can have faith in many things including ones self. There is clearly a place for faith within the human spirit.
Submitted for debate, in my singular, personal, private opinion - organized religion is the bane of the worlds society. Keep in mind I am not disparaging any particular religion in any way. I content the concept, the institution as a whole is suspect and needs a serious overhaul or abolishment.
