Newsbeat reports on the rise of websites selling counterfeit items from fashion to electronics. Trading Standards noted the websites tend to have similar addresses and layout to the official brands website, which could mean some users can be fooled.
The items are sold slightly cheaper than the official brands to get buyers, however once they get the items the customer realise they've brought a fake.
"Fake electrical goods like hair straighteners, phones and chargers are a particular concern, he added, because they can easily overheat and burn or catch fire.[...]"As soon as we are successful in taking down some counterfeit websites, there are others that pop up and we begin the whole procedure again." Mafia money launderers, terrorists and tax dodgers may be accumulating 500-euro bills because they’re easy to hide and transport, the Bank of Italy said in a report.
“The wide diffusion of the 500-euro bill is a motive of possible concern in terms of fighting both money laundering and terrorism financing,” the June 2009 report prepared by the central bank’s financial intelligence unit said. “Cash is the ideal tool for illegal payment and movement of funds” and “the high-value banknote simplifies the logistical management of large sums of money,” according to the study.Mafia money launderers, terrorists and tax dodgers may be accumulating 500-euro bills... more

AK-47s are the most popular rifles in the world, fueling conflicts across continents. But according to Spiegel, the company that manufactures the AK-47 might be facing bankruptcy:
The legendary Kalashnikov is a Russian export success story. The guns are used by 60 armies worldwide, account for up to 80 percent of all assault rifles and are known as the weapon of choice for terrorist groups and rebel movements. But the Izhmash Arms factory in the central Russian city of Izhevsk, where Kalashnikovs are manufactured, has long been concerned about forgeries.
According to Izhmash Arms' parent company, the Rosoboronexport State Corporation -- which has a monopoly on supplying Russian arms to the international market -- there are about eight countries in which dozens of business are making their own versions of the Kalashnikov. And they are doing this without passing on any licensing fees to the Russians.
Apparently all that stiff competition combined with falling arms sales thanks to the recession (Arms sales are down globally? Actually, for once, thank you recession.) might do the company in.

In the season of giving, authorities have come up with a way to help the homeless through items they have confiscated: Hand out about 10,000 pairs of counterfeit athletic shoes.
The shoes, which include knockoff Nike and Adidas sneakers minus the labels, were seized for trademark infringement by the Los Angeles Police Department's anti-piracy unit.
The LAPD, working in conjunction with the Los Angeles city attorney's office, plans to distribute sneakers Monday to 1,800 residents at the Union Rescue Mission downtown. Several winter homeless shelters in Culver City, Glendale, downtown and West Los Angeles will also receive shoes.

RECESSION! WE ARE INSIDE OF ONE RIGHT NOW. As tired as I am of having this recession jammed down my throat at every opportunity (I am a firm believer that if the press didn't tell us we were in a recession we wouldn't be in one), it has produced some interesting phenomenon.
While crimes like... Say.... Murder might be on the rise during a recession - capitol punishment is in the red.

It seems we can no longer afford to execute the people that are robbing/killing us for the money we don't have. US executions are at a 14 year low citing the cost of execution as a reason for the slump. Ok, fair enough - I've never been pro-death penalty... Maybe this recession isn't so bad I'm thinking - WRONG!

Ain't this recession just a kick in the pants! The global economy is in such a crisis that industries such as 'sex-tourism' are turning belly up. So now when I go to Prague I'm going to have to enjoy the local culture and cuisine... Greaaaaaat......
Ok so, we can't execute people, we can't travel internationally to pay for sex... Things are getting pretty bad. Any solutions? How bout we just print new money!

Neighborhoods in Milwaukee are discussing printing their own nifty little money in order to combat the lack of real money and encourage local spending. I think I might have came up with this idea when I was 6. Well Milwaukee, more power to you! If you can get people to spend Milwaukee fun-bucks then I will be the first person to counterfeit them and buy all your stuff.

The U.S. Senate on Friday unanimously passed a bipartisan bill backed by groups like the recording industry and the labor movement that would increase federal protections over intellectual property.
Introduced in July by Sens. Patrick Leahy, D-Vt., and Arlen Specter, R-Pa., the Prioritizing Resources and Organization for Intellectual Property Act now moves to the House of Representatives, where it will be taken up either Friday or Saturday, before Congress adjourns.
The bill was stripped of a controversial measure that would have given federal prosecutors the power to file civil lawsuits against peer-to-peer users who violate copyright laws. The Commerce Department and Justice Department voiced their opposition to the provision in a letter this week, saying it would create "unnecessary bureaucracy."
The legislation still provides increased resources for the Justice Department to combat intellectual property theft and provide coordination for federal and state efforts against counterfeiting and piracy. It also increases penalties for intellectual property infringements.
Not all of the Bush administration's objections with the legislation were addressed, however. The bill replaces the body that currently enforces intellectual property law with a White House Intellectual Property Enforcement Coordinator. The new coordinator will chair an inter-agency committee to combat counterfeiting and piracy. In its letter, the administration said the establishment of a White House IP coordinator was "objectionable on constitutional grounds."
The Commerce Department said it is still reviewing the legislation as it was passed.
The Recording Industry of America gave resounding praise for the bill.
"At a critical economic juncture, this bipartisan legislation provides enhanced protection for an important asset that helps lead our global competitiveness," RIAA Chairman and CEO Mitch Bainwol said. "Additional tools for intellectual-property enforcement are not just good for the copyright community but for consumers who will enjoy a wider array of legitimate offerings."
Rick Cotton, executive vice president and general counsel of NBC Universal, said concerns that the bill goes too far are unfounded.
"Over the last 20 years, the flood of physical counterfeit projects and the scale of digital theft (have) gone off the chart," he said. "What drives (the U.S. economy are) precisely technical invention, innovation, and creativity--if we don't protect that, we dramatically undermine our economic future."
Along with the recording industry, the bill is backed by the Chamber of Commerce, and labor groups like the AFL-CIO and Change to Win.
