A Canadian study currently under peer review apparently suggests that individuals given seasonal flu shots are twice as likely to get swine flu. The 'perplexing' study has thrown influenza health plans into disarray, with Quebec, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Ontario and Nova Scotia all suspending seasonal flu shots for anyone under 65 years of age. The study appears to be confined to Canada; the US, Britain, and Australia have not reported the same problem, so some are suggesting that the research has 'study bias.' However, the research appears to be 'solid' according to Dr. Ethan Rubinstein, head of adult infectious diseases at the University of Manitoba. 'There are a large number of authors, all of them excellent and credible researchers. And the sample size is very large — 12 or 13 million people taken from the central reporting systems in three provinces.A Canadian study currently under peer review apparently suggests that individuals... more

Noise unhealthy
Letter from Louis Hagler, MD to Contra Costa Times
I am a retired physician with an interest in the medical, social and economic effects of noise pollution. Opposition to a proposed noise ordinance in Concord is short-sighted and misguided in the extreme. As a matter of public health, the City Council has no issue that is more pressing.

CONCORD — This isn't about leaf blowers and barking dogs, Councilwoman Helen Allen said.
But she wants city leaders to talk in the near future about creating a noise ordinance to curb rumbling motorcycle noise, pounding bass-heavy car stereos and other "urban noise" throughout town.

How do you feel if I do this to you at 2:30 AM in the morning underneath of your window?
That it how some people act in the City after they get out of the clubs.
This has been filmed totally by chance. I was waken by other people doing other woeful things that many times I find very difficult to explain in words.

This comments analysis it is on Rasting speech from Angie1234p Comments on Comments.
If some of you took the time to read and follow some of my previous posts where I said that silence does not exit on Earth unless you are on the other space in a gravitational vacuum. What we have in the world it is quietness. Quietness is classified as being an environment where the sounds are acceptable and not excessive invasive beyond property lines. The Earth is composed of sounds. Noise that comes from sound it is an energy. It is an emission. Sounds are not something you can generalize. It must be classified.
-Why? Because sounds are at least characterized by
1. Type,
2. Amplitude,
3. Frequencies and
4. Range

It has been happening from the past to the present so many misunderstandings and denials on the issue of acoustic pollution by a part of the public and our authorities in this Country that many peoples lives have been negatively affected by this denial.
So here it is my question?
What do you recommend personally or on the legislative level to change this human perception that causes noise pollution?
Thanks for taking the time and for your input on this issue. It has been happening from the past to the present so many misunderstandings and... more

My family and I live in Western Massachusetts. We have lived for over two years with an insidious and invasive electrical noise which is in violation of MA Noise Regulations. Our lifestyles and well-being have been greatly compromised for almost 2 years. We have been unable to enjoy a normal night of sleep for over a year and a half.
Noise pollution due to electrical sources has been linked to serious health problems. We have not been able get help from our local, state or government officials, who will not enforce the law. Instead of help, we have received abuse and reverse condemnation. Why is this happening?

There is growing evidence that noise-related stress is a significant public health hazard. According to a report from the World Health Organisation, unwanted noise is causing hearing impairment including tinnitus, disturbing our sleep and triggering stress hormones which could in turn affect the immune system and metabolism.

First it was trains, planes and automobiles. Then lawnmowers, leaf blowers and barking dogs. Now it's loud music, big-screen televisions and home theaters.
If we were playing "Jeopardy!", the question would be: "What noise is driving people nuts?"

That is indeed a sad reality of American's "mediocracy" and "anti-social behavior" that started before or with the film "Easy Rider" back in the 60's. The Film was produced in 1969 but this mediocre motorcycle culture started in the 60's by Harley Davidson and its followers that today acoustically terrorizes inhabitants all over United States.
Should we blame the Producers of the Movie, "Easy Rider"?
Not in my opinion! They had all the rights to do the movie. People in society are the ones that suppose to separate their fantasies from reality and recognize that they do not have the right to imitate that. Motorcycle somehow became a symbol of "a fake freedom" that disturbs inhabitants all over the United States. That is indeed a sad reality of American's "mediocracy" and "anti-social behavior"... more

If you hear a loud muffler in Green Bay, you'll soon be able to turn the driver in to police.
A loud muffler ordinance needs one more reading before the city council before it can be published and take effect.
The ordinance allows Green Bay residents to fill out a form on the loud vehicle and send it to police, who will investigate and determine if the vehicle owner should be cited.

When noise pollution is not making us sick and anxious, it is literally killing us. How do we turn it off?
June 25, 2008 | Henry Bean can't stand the sound of burglar alarms. He hates back-up beepers on trucks and bristles when garbage rigs grind up their fetid loads in the middle of the night, the noise reverberating off Manhattan's buildings. But Bean harbors special resentment for the oblivious car owners whose vehicles blare false alarms. "It bothers me that their cars can shout in my ear, not stop shouting, and I can't do anything about it," he says. "My pride can't handle it. I can't exist if I don't fight back in some way, however pathetically or ineffectually."

Accidents do happen — like the time I was having breakfast with a San Francisco police commander and forgot to turn my phone off of vibrate. When it went off, I jumped and we were both so startled I thought my nervous friend in blue might shoot me.
And accidents especially seem to happen to bicyclists in the Bay Area, because every time there is a collision, a story follows fanning the public outrage.
Oh, and did I mention that in almost every story, it was the car driver who is said to be at fault? In this part of the world, pedal power equates with political power.
So I have to admit, I was a bit taken aback to hear that bicycle advocates were actually the ones generating an idea that would allow them to legally blow past stop signs and perhaps use a little more caution at red lights, which were to be seen by them as stop signs.
