Young teen animal activist Elora Malama West has posted a video of a seal slaughter magnet on her blog saying "Take a stand against the fur trade! Wearing fur does not make you fashionable… it only makes you ugly."
In the video the Australian seal fur business man, Hatem Yavuz, laughs and kids about his commercial fur business saying if he wasn't doing it someone else would be. A weak argument for choosing a livelihood, animal rights activists say.
What's your take on this? Should we be complacent in seal slaughter? Is it just a business? Are there moral repercussions attached to it? Given the reality of the brutal way baby seals are caught and slaughtered for their fur - would you take a stand against international fur trade? How do these businesses continue in our "enlightened" culture? Aren't there enough people against it, or are there more people willing to spend 10's of thousands of dollars on furs? Who wears fur? Are they liberal, democrat, concervative, republican, socialist, communist, movie stars, pop stars, rap stars, just who keeps this man in business?
Elora West, an American teenager, wants to put a stop to it. Between high school classes, school work deadlines, and working with Sea Shepherd as a Cove Guardian, she's doing her best to see that sea mammals get a fair shake in our modern world.
We have Gore-Tex - who needs seal fur?

CHARLOTTETOWN, Canada, March 28 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- IFAW (The International Fund for Animal Welfare – www.ifaw.org) has confirmed with the Department of Fisheries and Oceans that a sole sealing vessel has hailed out on the opening day of the commercial harp seal hunt in the Gulf of St. Lawrence, Canada.
The vessel is reportedly heading to the Northern Gulf – the only area where seals have been observed in the Gulf – to kill the few animals that have managed to survive what has been a disastrous year for harp seal pups.
"After spending the past week watching the few tenacious seal pup survivors clinging to life, it is heartbreaking to realize that they may now be killed," said Sheryl Fink, a senior researcher with IFAW. "On the other hand, I am encouraged that only one boat has decided to go seal killing so far this year."
This year has been the worst ice year on record for the east coast of Canada. The IFAW observation team has been in Prince Edward Island and Newfoundland, documenting the ice conditions and few pups that remain. Harp seals need ice for giving birth, nursing and resting, and seal mortality is expected to be very high this year as a result of the poor ice conditions.
"The situation this year is dire, and there is no question that the effect of climate change on these individual animals is devastating. We've seen dead and abandoned pups on beaches, starving pups crying for food and trying to suckle off each other, and whitecoat pups swimming in desperate search of ice on which they can rest," said Fink.
The IUCN Red List of Threatened Species notes that harp seals are going to be negatively affected by climate change. "Under a precautionary approach, these seal pups should be protected from commercial hunting and given the chance to survive. Instead, Canada is proceeding to kill off any animals that might actually exhibit traits that would allow the species to better contend with climate change," said Fink.
The lack of interest in sealing this year is not only due to the scarcity of seal pups, but also a result of a decreased demand for seal products. Markets for seal pelts appear to remain saturated with prices expected to remain around $15 per skin, down from $104 in 2006. A commercial hunt for grey seals earlier this year failed to occur altogether.

Stranded on a beach all alone, this starving harp seal pup faces a bleak and, most likely, short future.
The pup is one of tens of thousands who have washed up on beaches in Canada's Gulf Of St Lawrence during the worst ice conditions ever recorded in the region.
Thousands are presumed dead because the gulf, which is the annual birthing ground of hundreds of thousands of harp seals, is currently lacking both ice and seals.
Many more thousands of seals are expected to die this year, the International Fund For Animal Welfare (IFAW) has warned.
Sheryl Fink, a senior researcher with IFAW, said: 'The conditions this year are disastrous for seal pups. I've surveyed this region for nine years and have never seen anything like this.
'There is wide open water instead of the usual ice floes, and rather than the hundreds of thousands of seal pups that we normally encounter, only a handful of baby harp and hooded seals - animals that are normally found on ice - remain on the beaches.'
This year is expected to yield another especially high harp seal pup mortality rate, following on from 2007 when 99 per cent and 75 per cent of pups are thought to have died in similar circumstances, and 2002's 75 per cent mortality rate.
Scientists have hailed 2010 as the worst ice year on record with little to no ice forming in the Southern Gulf.
They are concerned that the cumulative effects of high pup mortality due to the poor ice conditions, and high numbers of pups killed during Canada's commercial seal hunt could be devastating.
Ms Fink added: 'Finding these ice-dependent seal species on land is extremely unusual, and should be considered a warning signal.
'The seal pups we have found on shore are thin and unable to defend themselves or escape from land-based predators. It is highly unlikely that any of these pups will survive long enough for there to be a seal hunt in the southern gulf this year

I am posting this after going to current feeling certain someone else already had a story about this horror. I wanted to join in and find out what can be done. It's inconceivable to me that this goes on every spring. So now with tears streaming down my face from watching this video I found my question is what can we do to end this cruel and inhumane slaughter? Most people don't pay attention to anything except being hurt in the wallet. Is there a way to do this to Canada? Can we boycott a product or import that would be enough to make them notice? Please comment if you know.I am posting this after going to current feeling certain someone else already had a... more

The end of Russia's harp seal hunt was applauded by the International Fund for Animal Welfare, which has been working in Canada and throughout the world to put an end to commercial seal hunts.
"We are overwhelmingly pleased that the Russian government has finally completed its pledge to protect harp seals," said Masha Vorontsova, director of IFAW Russia.
"The time has now come for the Canadian government to follow suit and end their cruel hunt for harp seals once and for all," said Vorontsova. "These hunts are unnecessary. They are merely supporting the trade in fur used for non-essential fashion items."
The Seal Conservation Society, based in Northern Ireland, says the main product of the Russian hunt has been the white fur pelts of very young seals which are dyed black for sale as hats "for which there is little demand."
Although the European Union currently maintains a ban on the importation of harp seal whitecoat products, an environmental group has found evidence that the ban is not being enforced and that whitecoat products have been entering the European Union from Russia through Norway.
"It has been reported that many people participating in the Russian hunt work in conditions of virtual slavery and are forced by their employer to take part in the hunt or lose their jobs, no alternative jobs being available," the Seal Conservation Society says. "There are two sealing concessions for the Russian hunt, sealers using helicopters to reach the seals on the ice and killing the pups by clubbing them. The number of pups killed by Russian sealers in 1999 was 34,850, all whitecoats."
Environmental groups have been trying to promote ecotourism and small business as alternatives to the Russian seal hunt.
Later this week, the world's largest seal hunt will begin off the east coast of Canada. Last year, more than 217,000 harp seals were killed, 99.8 percent of which were under three months of age. Canada does not allow the clubbing of whitecoats. Sealers must wait until the animals get their darker gray coats at about six weeks of age.
But around the world, opposition is mounting to annual seal hunts in Canada, where most of the world's seal hunting takes place, as well as Greenland, Namibia and Norway.
On March 2, a European Parliamentary committee voted to ban products derived from seals from being imported into the European Union, exported from it, or even transported through EU territory.
Seals are hunted mainly for their pelts, but also for meat and fat, which is used in beauty products.
