A boy who was desperate to “power up” after watching “Transformers” started drinking gasoline in emulation of the mechanical heroes of the film, suffering permanent brain damage as a result.
The boy, a 14-year-old schoolboy living in China’s Sichuan area, apparently enjoyed good grades and was good with machines, perhaps explaining his fascination with Transformers.
His parents running a shop selling lighters, he found himself with ready access to lighter fluid, which he began covertly snuffing, in spite of being caught several times. Soon he progressed to filching gasoline in bottles and using the vapours to get high with.A boy who was desperate to “power up” after watching... more

After Sandy Allen had a large tumor removed from her brain's left temporal lobe, she found herself struggling with words. Reading became difficult. She couldn't follow plots or instructions. Some of these problems were to be expected, since Allen's tumor was in a part of her brain associated with speech (although areas throughout the brain affect language and communication). But the surgery had another, surprising effect: It seemingly "activated" her right brain, spurring an intense interest in art. After Sandy Allen had a large tumor removed from her brain's left temporal lobe,... more

Researchers from Children's Hospital Boston have found a way to regrow damaged brain cells, a finding that could bring new treatments for spinal cord and brain injuries.
By silencing genes that prevent neuron regenerating the researchers showed that brain cells in mice would regrow vigarously after being damaged.
When the genes were silenced 50% of damaged neurons survived after two weeks compared to just 20% in those untreated mice. Some of the treated mice also showed significant axon regrowth - the long arms of a neuron used to transmit signals.
While the tests show that neurons and axons can be regrown, it's unclear whether their function is fully restored. If brain activity does continue the researchers hope that the treatment can be turned into a drug to easily help treat brain and spinal cord injury.

"Excitotoxin- Class of substances that damage neurons through paroxysmal overactivity. They are toxins that bind to certain receptors (e.g., certain glutamate receptors) and may cause neuronal cell death.
The best known excitotoxins are the excitatory amino acids, that can produce lesions in the CNS similar to those of Huntingdon's chorea or Alzheimer's disease.
Excitotoxicity is thought to contribute to neuronal cell death associated with stroke."

"Excite your Brain Cells to Death"
"What would you do?
If you found out that your daily meals contain a chemical additive that could cause brain damage in your children?
If evidence indicates that this chemical could affect how your child's brain forms and develops.
If the damage caused by this chemical might not show itself until your child was older, manifesting as learning or emotional difficulties.
If this chemical damaged the part of the brain that controls hormones, resulting in hormonal imbalances later in life.
If this chemical might aggravate or even precipitate degenerative diseases of the nervous system and brain such as Parkinson's Disease, Huntington's disease, ALS, and Alzheimer's disease.
So begins the book Excitotoxins, the Taste That Kills, by Dr. Russell L. Blaylock, MD, a practicing board-certified neurosurgeon with a profound understanding of the structure and function of the brain and nervous system.
In his introduction here's what Dr. Blaylock says about the excitotoxins, MSG and aspartate (brand name NutraSweet or Equal), "Despite what the defenders of MSG and NutraSweet will scream, this book is not unduly alarmist...It was only after a year of careful examination and debate that I decided to write this book. I felt that the information concerning the dangers to small children and older persons was too important to withhold. Each person must decide for themself if they choose to believe that the danger is real.""

More and more Scots are literally drinking themselves senseless, according to new figures:
a total of 540 Scots were discharged from hospitals with alcohol-related brain damage in 2006-7 – a rise of 16 per cent on the last figure, taken in 2003-4.
More than a third of cases came from Greater Glasgow. The west of Scotland now has the highest rate of people suffering from Korsakoff's syndrome in western Europe.
Alcohol-related brain damage is an umbrella term for a number of conditions, and Korsakoff's syndrome is the primary one. The condition is the result of vitamin B deficiency from years of alcohol abuse and not eating properly. It causes large-scale memory loss and is classed as a form of dementia. Although cutting out alcohol can stop further deterioration, existing damage can never be reversed.
Most sufferers, once diagnosed, require a high level of care for the rest of their lives.
Conservative MSP Mary Scanlon, whose parliamentary question revealed the figures, said: "The increase in people suffering from alcohol-related brain disease shows the hidden effect of Scotland's dangerous relationship with alcohol." She added: "The Scottish Parliament needs to address the issue of the growing number who are causing themselves irreversible brain damage through alcohol abuse."
