To promote its new alien-invasion series, ABC is creating the shock of something inexplicable appearing in the skies over New York. Starting Friday, October 23, 2009, the Giant Red Letter V-- written by skywriting planes-- will begin to appear over New York landmarks like the Statue of Liberty, the network says, to promote "V," a remake of the 1980s miniseries that begins next month. ABC won't specify which landmarks will be getting the giant V treatment, but it will go on for several days. New Yorkers can expect to see the sky graffiti overhead early Sunday October 25, 2009 and again on Halloween October 31, 2009.
Cities being subjected to the campaign include New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Boston, and Philadelphia. Both New York and Los Angeles are set to be “V’d” several times.
There’s been so much turmoil around the release of V, an ABC sci-fi series based on a 1980s NBC show and mini-series, that I started to dismiss it. ABC broke up the premiere so that the show would debut as a mini-series before going to full series in the spring. That news came after production came to a halt for a complete series overhaul. Something was going very wrong.
At least ABC’s marketing team seems confident enough in the show to pull out all the stops, promo-wise. THR reported yesterday on a skywriting promo that will feature a red “V” over US cities. Now ABC has released the list of cities, including New York, Boston, Minneapolis and Los Angeles. (Not shockingly, Cleveland is absent from the list. Oh well.)
Check out the complete list of cities after the jump.

Juarez, Mexico has become a war zone featuring the sort of ghastly crimes Americans thought only happened in Africa a la 'Blood Diamond'. Drug cartels waging all-out war have plunged Juarez into a melee of retaliatory violence. The situation is worse than previously reported by Vanguard eight months ago. (http://current.com/items/89845362_narco-war-next-door.htm)
These are some of the most disturbing quotes:
" New figures released to CNN on Wednesday by Mayor Jose Reyes Ferriz indicate the death toll for this year has already surpassed 2,000 homicides -- almost 400 more murders than the total count for 2008.
"It has been 22 months of this war, and it hasn't stopped. The violence has increased, and the possibility that it will stop is becoming more remote," Reyes Ferriz told CNN in a phone interview."
"A government source close to the investigation told CNN about a case where a relative of a drug cartel member was tied to two trucks and stretched until his arms where ripped apart. Dismemberments and beheadings have become a common method of retaliation."Juarez, Mexico has become a war zone featuring the sort of ghastly crimes Americans... more

LAST Wednesday, changes to New York’s notorious Rockefeller drug laws went into effect, allowing judges to shorten the prison terms of some nonviolent offenders. This measure will further reduce New York’s prison population, which has already declined, in the past 10 years, from about 71,600 in 1999 to about 59,300 today. (The state’s crime rate also dropped substantially during that time.)
Nevertheless, mainly because of opposition from the correction officers’ union and politicians from the upstate areas where most of our correctional facilities are, the state has been slow to close prisons. It was not until earlier this year that policymakers in Albany, confronted with fiscal crisis, mustered the will to shut three prison camps and seven prison annexes — a total of about 2,250 prison beds — in a move that is expected to save $52 million over the next two years.
But the state could go further. The prison system still has more than 5,000 empty beds in 69 prisons. What’s more, there are other ways to lower the prison population. For starters, state lawmakers could repeal the Rockefeller mandatory sentencing provisions that remain on the books. They could also increase the number of participants on work release. In 1994, more than 27,000 people were in this time-tested program that helps them manage the transition back to their communities. Today, about 2,500 are enrolled.
In addition, the state could reduce the number of people — last year, more than 9,000 — who are returned to prison for technical parole violations like missing a meeting with an officer or breaking curfew. Most experts agree that for about half of these people it would be safer and smarter to enroll them in re-entry programs or provide more supervision. Also, more prisoners with good institutional records could be given parole. And eligibility for so-called merit time, which reduces prison terms for inmates who complete educational and other programs, could be expanded to people convicted of violent offenses many years ago.
Taken together, these actions could cut the state’s prison rolls by 5,000 to 10,000 more, enabling the governor and the legislature to close at least four prisons the size of Attica, which holds 2,100 inmates, or a greater number of smaller facilities.
After New York passed the Rockefeller drug laws in 1973, a mandatory sentencing movement swept the country, raising the nationwide prison population to nearly 2.4 million, from 300,000. This experiment in mass incarceration was a failure. There is no conclusive evidence that it enhanced public safety, and some research suggests that time in prison makes people more prone to violence. It wasted billions of dollars a year. And it has devastated the low-income minority communities where most of our prisoners come from.
New York can now help point criminal justice in a more sensible and constructive direction — and show other states how to save money — by downsizing its prison system.
Robert Gangi is the executive director of the Correctional Association of New York, a nonprofit organization that monitors prison conditions.LAST Wednesday, changes to New York’s notorious Rockefeller drug laws went into... more

One of the crucial sattelites used by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), parent company of the National Weather Service, used extensively to measure surface wind speed and direction over land and water, and also used to forecast tropical storms, is within weeks of failure. To add insult to injury, Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison (R-TX) has proposed to cut NOAA's funding by $172 million, which will be diverted to the State Criminal Alien Assistance Program (SCAAP). The SCAAP budget will increase by 75% while NOAA is so understaffed, the only program that can absorb this burden would be the sattelite program.
What do you think about this?

The Lakota Foundation Invokes Response to Suicide Rates Among Teenagers on Pine Ridge.

Huntington – LI, New York, Oct. 4th, 2009 – The “standing room only” capacity at the Cinema Arts Centre’s
early Sunday morning audience were treated to a rare event, “First Voices: Listen We Must”. The 4-hour special included music by the group Ghosthorse, Lakota dance, WOUNDED KNEE
a film by Stanley Nelson – followed by a discussion including a “meet and greet” breakfast. The panel of Lance White Magpie, Christine Rose
and Tiokasin Ghosthorse
gave examples of the conditions on Lakota reservations in the South Dakota with life expectancy, health, housing conditions and homelessness, transportation, water contamination, federal-state-tribal relations, scenarios of racism in what is now being called the “Mississippi of the North".
“People came from Rhode Island, Pennsylvania, Connecticut, New Jersey as well as New York. The music had people connected completely. The film [Wounded Knee] was something we all should see and the discussion afterwards was uplifting”, said Jim Krivo, one of the organizers of WBAI-NY
.
0A
“There has never been an attendance like this, as far as I’ve seen, at the Cinema Arts Centre”, many people were either “awakened” or “I couldn’t believe it” were more of the comments made by the pubic in attendance.
The benefit shed light on the Lakota adults and elders who are deeply concerned for youth living on the reservation today, with the High School drop-out rate at 73% and the teenage suicide rates at an “Alarmingly,... 10 times higher than the national average” among northern reservations, “90% all Indian teens who commit suicide have a diagnosable mental illness” said Senator Johanns of Nebraska, who testified at the S. 1635 – 7th Generation Promise: Indian Youth Suicide Prevention Act of 2009
on September 10, 2009.
Lakota youth face tremendous obstacles in their life. 90% of the population on the reservation lives below the federal poverty level and there is an unemployment rate between 85% and 92%. One-third of the homes are severely substandard, without water, electricity, adequate insulation, and sewage systems (Source: Indian Housing Authority). The Pine Ridge Reservation is home to approximately 40,000 persons, 40% of which are under the age of 18.
Tiokasin Ghosthorse, said=2 0during the panel discussion “children as young as 5 years of age commit suicide, which brings to mind the barriers of education which forms the backbone of a child’s mind. The education Lakota children receive within the presence of the American system is almost completely lacking in Lakota cultural education on those same reservations. While most reservations have suicide prevention grants, they offer a minimally oriented band-aid approach, which has not stemmed the rash of suicides since I was a teenager in the 70’s. A holistic cultural approach is needed that cuts through the barriers of generational trauma and goes to the root of the problem rather than the symptom.”The Lakota Foundation Invokes Response to Suicide Rates Among Teenagers on Pine Ridge.... more

I write to you, America, as a Muslim-American who is frustrated at seeing both sides of my identity spreading myths about each other. In part one of this two part article, I address America from a Muslim perspective. In part two, which will follow in the coming weeks, I shall write to the Muslim community, from an American perspective.
Dear America,
Our world today is assaulted with myriad headlines describing rising extremism and terrorism, and political instability in Afghanistan, Pakistan, and the Middle East. Despite the plethora of bad news, most recently we have seen a day of hope marked by the end of Ramadan, where Muslims from all nations, social classes, and sects openly united in the spirit of humility, brotherhood, thankfulness, and peace.
As human beings, you and me have a tendency to let the negative marginalize the good and the true. But in this Ramadan the unity and the message of peace and humility that nearly a billion Muslims have exhibited should not go unnoticed, nor should it be underestimated.
America, even though you are part of us (Muslims) and we are a part of you, you often fear and misunderstand the one thing that unites the billion of us around the world is peace, love, and spiritual strength. You fear our religion, Islam. I write the following to not accuse anyone or apologize on behalf of any group. In part one of this article, I speak to you America, as one Muslim who is part of the majority of Muslims standing against the Ahmedinijads, Bin Ladens, and Taliban and Al Qaeda. These men have stolen my voice... our voice. The actions of a violent minority have for too long trumped the selfless and righteous actions of the moderate majority who do good in the name of Islam.
Firstly, Muslims are not a violent people and Islam is not a violent religion. I fear you overlook the fact that the faith of Muslims has been monopolized by the corrupt despots of Muslim countries and Muslim extremists. And it is the extremists whose power is bolstered by a media that has paralyzed the voice of the Muslim majority, who in fact abhor violence and terrorism.
It can be confusing even to me because on one side we only see Muslim extremists on the TV preaching hate in the name of Islam and we barely hear the majority. As I will touch on in part two of this article, Muslims have even marginalized themselves. But America, Muslims are a community of over a billion people, most of whom live in poverty within developing countries governed by oppressive, abusive, authoritarian regimes. These very regimes remain bunkered against an alienated group of extremists who are taking to the gun instead of a potentially rigged ballot. It is our mothers and daughters and sons who are being killed on a daily basis by either violent extremists or botched missile attacks by NATO. We are against violence and terrorism America, be it from Muslim extremists or NATO bombs. We are against violence because it is we who are the primary target of most terrorist attacks today. And while we may disagree with your military actions and policies, we look up to the principles that make up America... I speak of the freedom to be critical of yourself as a society and government; the opportunities awarded by the most comprehensive education system in the world; and your effortless ability to adapt in an ever transforming world.

By Dr. Russell Blaylock (www.russellblaylockmd.com)
"By 1853, Parliament began passing laws to make the untested vaccine compulsory throughout the British Empire. Other countries of Europe followed suit. Once the economic implications of compulsory vaccinations were realized, few dared to disagree. Then, as now, the media were controlled by the vaccine manufacturers and the government, who stood to make huge money from the sale of these spurious vaccines..."

What is in the Regular Flu Shot?
•Egg proteins, including avian contaminant viruses
•Gelatin, known to cause allergic reactions and anaphylaxis are usually associated with sensitivity to egg or gelatin
•Polysorbate 80 (Tween80™), which can cause severe allergic reactions, including anaphylaxis
•Formaldehyde: a known carcinogen
•Triton X100: a strong detergent
•Sucrose (table sugar)
•Resin, known to cause allergic reactions
•Gentamycin, an antibiotic
•Thimerosal: mercury is still in multidose vials
Analysis of material by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention by Dr. Russell Blaylock. (September 5, 2009)
Critical Observations:
•Doctor visits for flu are down from the level in April
•Total flu hospitalizations are similar or lower than for seasonal flu (yearly flu)
•The number of death secondary to flu and pneumonia is unchanged from yearly rate
•Only two states are reporting widespread infections -- Georgia and Alaska. Other states report only regional or sporadic activity, meaning it’s not very contagious.
•There is no evidence that the virus has mutated at all anywhere in the world
•The virus remains susceptible to the drugs Tamiflu and Relenza.
•Only 43,771 cases have been reported in the United States. Because of poor reporting the CDC estimates that true numbers indicate that one million have been infected. Many people did not get sick enough to go to a doctor. Likewise, not all people are tested who go to a doctor.
•Of these 5,011 have been hospitalized and 302 have died.
Death Rates From the H1N1 Flu
•If we use the 43,771 figure and 302 deaths that means the death rate is 0.6 percent, an extremely low death rate for any flu.
•The percentage of hospitalized patients who died was 6 percent, again a very low incidence of death.
•Since the CDC estimates that one million have been infected, we must recalculate death rates. Using this more accurate figure, the death rate is in truth 0.03 percent, which means 99.97percent will not die from this flu. Your chances of dying are incredibly low.By Dr. Russell Blaylock (www.russellblaylockmd.com)

MERCED, Calif. - A California man whose legs are amputated says police used a stun gun on him twice and violently manhandled him even though he was unarmed.
Internal affairs investigators say they're looking into the complaint by 40-year-old Gregory Williams, who was arrested Sept. 11 on suspicion of domestic violence and resisting arrest.
Williams and witnesses say officers tasered the wheelchair-bound man twice, then left him handcuffed with his pants down on the sidewalk in broad daylight. Williams spent six days in jail before prosecutors said they lacked evidence to charge him.
Merced officers said in a police report that Williams was uncooperative and refused to give his 2-year-old daughter to Child Protective Services. The police department has declined further comment, pending the internal investigation.MERCED, Calif. - A California man whose legs are amputated says police used a stun gun... more

“So why did the Israeli government boycott the commission? The real answer is quite simple: they knew full well that the commission, any commission, would have to reach the conclusions it did reach.”
--------------
The important points come near the end: that the rather conservative findings of the report (and its acceptance of Israel’s dubious right to self-defense–dubious because Gaza is effectively occupied), have acted as a "bombshell" in Israel because Goldstone calls for action, and because the report contributes to the fraying of Jewish support for Israel and to the "Legitimacy War" that Israel has been losing in the eyes of the world. "A historic contribution" to the Palestinian struggle for justice, Falk concludes.
-------------
Uri Avnery (Israeli peace activist, and former Knesset member), “On the Goldstone Report” 19 Sept 2009
Richard Goldstone, former judge of South Aftica’s Constitutional Court, the first prosecutor at The Hague on behalf of the International Criminal Court for Former Yugolavia, and anti-apartheid campaigner reports that he was most reluctant to take on the job of chairing the UN fact-finding mission charged with investigating allegations of war crimes committed by Israel and Hamas during the three week Gaza War of last winter. Goldstone explains that his reluctance was due to the issue being “deeply charged and politically loaded,” and was overcome because he and his fellow commissioners were “professionals committed to an objective, fact-based investigation,” adding that “above all, I accepted because I believe deeply in the rule of law and the laws of war,” as well as the duty to protect civilians to the extent possible in combat zones. The four-person fact-finding mission was composed of widely respected and highly qualified individuals, including the distinguished international law scholar, Christine Chinkin, a professor at the London School of Economics. Undoubtedly adding complexity to Goldstone’s decision is the fact that he is Jewish, with deep emotional and family ties to Israel and Zionism, bonds solidified by his long association with several organizations active in Israel.
Despite the impeccable credentials of the commission members, and the worldwide reputation of Richard Goldstone as a person of integrity and political balance, Israel refused cooperation from the outset. It did not even allow the UN undertaking to enter Israel or the Palestinian Territories, forcing reliance on the Egyptian government to facilitate entry at Rafah to Gaza. As Uri Avnery observes, however much Israel may attack the commission report as one-sided and unfair, the only plausible explanation of its refusal to cooperate with fact-finding and taking the opportunity to tell its side of the story was that it had nothing to tell that could hope to overcome the overwhelming evidence of the Israeli failure to carry out its attacks on Gaza last winter in accordance with the international law of war. No credible international commission could reach any set of conclusions other than those reached by the Goldstone Report on the central allegations.
In substantive respects the Goldstone Report adds nothing new. Its main contribution is to confirm widely reported and analyzed Israeli military practices during the Gaza War. There had been several reliable reports already issued, condemning Israel’s tactics as violations of the laws of war and international humanitarian law, including by Amnesty International, Human Rights Watch, and a variety of respected Israeli human rights groups. Journalists and senior United Nations civil servants had reached similar conclusions. Perhaps, most damning of all the material available before the Goldstone Report was the publication of a document entitled “Breaking the Silence,” containing commentaries by thirty members of the Israel Defense Forces---continued below“So why did the Israeli government boycott the commission? The real answer is quite... more

Thomas Charles Bender is a mason by trade.
Until nine months ago, his only brush with the law was for a pair of hunting infractions, including failure to wear a fluorescent orange vest.
Bender's life took a nightmarish turn Jan. 3, when his former fiancée told police he'd raped her.
Driving down Bethel Road, Bender found himself surrounded by 12 to 15 police cars at the intersection of Fox Road.
He later learned his accuser told deputies to consider him armed and dangerous.
Bender, 29, spent eight weeks in jail before he was able to raise $25,000, the 10 percent of his $250,000 bail needed to be released.
Then on March 16, his accuser, Samantha Carter-drabczyk, contacted the Frederick County State's Attorney's Office and asked to discuss the case, according to court documents.
She recanted her rape allegations during a meeting that same day with four criminal justice authorities involved in the case: Assistant State's Attorney Lindell K. Angel; Rebecca Littleton, a victim-witness coordinator; Cpl. Jason West, a sheriff's office detective; and Wayne Moffatt, a state's attorney investigator.
According to court documents, Carter-drabczyk told the group she had been angry at Bender when she made the allegations in January. She told them the two had argued and then had consensual sex.
Moffatt asked Carter-drabczyk if she was coming forward to see justice done, according to the documents.
"He was falsely accused," deputies quoted her as saying in documents seeking charges against her.
Now the 29-year-old Thurmont woman is awaiting trial on criminal charges herself: three counts of making a false statement to police, a crime punishable by up to six months in jail and a $500 fine for each conviction.
A pretrial conference is set for Sept. 25 in Frederick County Circuit Court.
Thursday evening, Carter-drabczyk changed her story again, two weeks before her next court appearance.
For Bender, recovering his life as he knew it before his arrest has been slow.
"It's so frustrating," he said. "I didn't do anything wrong."
On June 16, Bender received a notarized letter from criminal justice authorities telling him the criminal charges against him had been expunged from court records.
Bender said his arrest has cost him countless jobs and at least $40,000 in legal fees.
Even though his record has been cleared, he's still required to pay about $460 a month on his bail. The stigma from the allegations has left him humiliated.
Two of the deputies at his arrest were people he knew from attending Thurmont -area schools. While held on charges of first-degree rape, second-degree assault and false imprisonment, Bender was kept in a cell block with men accused of robbery and attempted murder.Thomas Charles Bender is a mason by trade.

The United Nations nuclear assembly voted on Friday to urge Israel to accede to the Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) and place all atomic sites under the world body's inspections, in a surprise victory for Arab states.
The resolution, passed narrowly for the first time in nearly two decades, expresses concern about "Israeli nuclear capabilities" and calls on the International Atomic Energy Agency chief, Mohamed ElBaradei, to work on the issue.
The Middle East resolution, sponsored by Arab states, was backed by 49 votes to 45 against in a floor vote at the IAEA's annual member states conference. The vote split along Western and developing nation lines. There were 16 abstentions.

Florida law firm Morgan and Morgan filed a first-of-its-kind lawsuit alleging that a company's collection calls were so frequent and harassing that they contributed to a person's death because they increased Stanley McLeod's blood pressure and stress levels.
McLeod's debt problems stemmed from the fact that he had difficulty paying his mortgage because he had to quit his job at Sears after suffering a massive heart attack.
Dianne McLeod, Stanley's wife, described how he would get 10 to 12 calls each day. With each call his face would turn red and he'd experience shortness of breath.
McLeod saved tapes of some of the messages left on their answering machine. One message even commented on the expensive helicopter ride that saved Stanley's life: "Get your act together and make the payments on your mortgage. In a document published by The Israel Project entitled “The Israel Project’s 2009 Global Language Dictionary”, Dr Frank Luntz unmasks a modern-day propaganda campaign that would have made Napoleon and Machiavelli proud. He writes:
There is NEVER, EVER, any justification for the deliberate slaughter of innocent women and children. NEVER. The primary Palestinian public relations goal is to demonstrate that the so-called “hopelessness of the oppressed Palestinians” is what causes them to go out and kill children. This must be challenged immediately, aggressively, and directly.
The emotional appeal to saving children works, but the appeal is based on two lies:
(1) that Palestinians generally (not only suicide bomber extremists) are the ones who kill children, while Israelis (not individual extremists, but Israel's armed forces) never slaughter Palestinian children.
(2) The second falsehood is that the Palestinians have a public relations goal that must be challenged when, in fact, the Palestinians have proven to be hopeless and goalless when it comes to public relations. Unlike Frank Luntz, the Palestinians have no effective PR voices. They can't even get their ambassador in the UK to speak out to the British public about Israel’s lies and propaganda.

Here's the 500 plus page report coming from the United Nations. Skim it and refer to what interests you. You'll find out that Israels indictment here is much more serious than the indictment against Palestine. Israel committed some grave humanitarian crimes, amounting to far more serious war crimes than Palestine is charged with.
Now we know the lobby and the far right will post here and are going to say bias, lies, etc when in fact, the world knows the truth about Israel. Every day more and more people find out and demand justice. Every day more and more corporations and countries and colleges are divesting AWAY from Israel. Its pretty clear who is the evil party.
Israel will face the music in the International Criminal Courts and hopefully pay the ultimate price handed out by justice.

Based in San Francisco, Jews For a Free Palestine (JFFP) is an organization of nominally Jewish activists who support what they call "Palestine liberation solidarity efforts." In conjunction with its partner organization, Renounce Aliyah, JFFP says: "[W]e denounce the continued racist and inhumane policies of the Israeli government. There can be no safety for Jews internationally as the Israeli government continues in the role of occupier and oppressor, while falsely claiming to represent us all."
JFFP protested side-by-side with such groups as International ANSWER, United For Peace and Justice, Al-Awda, the International Solidarity Movement, If Americans Knew, the Muslim Students' Association of the U.S. and Canada, and the Council on American-Islamic Relations.
Jews for a Free Palestine calls on Jews to actively oppose U.S. economic aid to Israel, and to "affirm the Palestinian Right of Return." JFFP places the number of Arabs who ought to be granted this "Right of Return" to Israel at 5 million.

Why are we not surprised that the Israeli government would continue to steal land not belonging to them. This was part of the Road Map to Peace-a BIG part that they originally agreed on. It was a lie to not only steal land, but to dupe the American people of the 3 billion dollars a year, PLUS billions of dollars more in aid from unsuspecting and trusting Americans.
Israel will then have an excuse for the violence they themselves will precipitate from this 'Fuck You' attitude and call it Terrorism, when in fact, the Palestinians are defending their property and their lives.
