Still waiting for the Current Shopping Network Debut-
Regular viewers of Current TV’s Countdown with Keith Olbermann may have noticed that the progressive newshour has gone dark this week. I don’t mean that host Keith Olbermann has taken to quoting Sylvia Plath and wearing out the grooves on his My Chemical Romance records, I mean he has literally been broadcasting from a dark place. Early on in Monday’s show, technical problems beset the program, and since then, Olbermann has been hosting his show from what appears to be an endless black void. Mediaite has confirmed that Olbermann has not been confined to an interdimensional limbo, nor is he broadcasting from inside Rush Limbaugh‘s head.
I missed Monday’s episode, so when I tuned in Tuesday to see Olbermann lighting a candle at the top of the show, gaping black maw of eternity behind him, I figured it was some in-joke that I had missed the setup to. As it turns out, an on-air technical mishap the night before had forced the host to change locations. Here’s where the problem started, and Olbermann’s candle-lighting gag:
Since then, Olbermann has continued to host the show with that black background, and has taken to cracking wise about the low-tech milieu, making copious references to the DuMont Network. Although born of necessity, the look is oddly, enigmatically compelling, like a living black-velvet Elvis painting, or a newscast from some alienated sci-fi dystopia.
Even more mysterious is the fact that no one seems to have noticed. There was no mention of the change on Olbermann’s Twitter feed, so apparently, his fans took it in stride as well as he did. Maybe it’s my fascination with behind-the-scenes minutiae, but not knowing what could possibly force a 21st century television personality to broadcast from the inside of a sensory deprivation tank was just driving me nuts.
Well, mystery solved. According to Current TV President David Bohrman, “The facility we lease for the production of Countdown has had a series of technical problems. Monday a dimmer rack overheated and blew out the lights, forcing the crew to move to a different part of the set.”
It probably is just me, but I find it amazing that it looks like Olbermann is at the very edge of the universe, when he’s really just a few feet away from his usual set. I’m also fascinated by the fact that the desk Martin Bashir teases his show from looks like it’s a picture on the wall of Tamron Hall‘s studio. No, that’s actually Martin Bashir in there!Still waiting for the Current Shopping Network Debut-

Second quarter cable news ratings reveal that MSNBC is doing just fine without Keith Olbermann.
Better actually.
The network continued to gain viewers and year-over-year is up 3%.
Lawrence O'Donnell, who replaced Olbermann at 8pm after his abrupt departure in January, lost some viewers -- 974,000 viewers compared to Olby's 1.06 million (he saw a similar drop in the demo). But, to be fair, the drop is pretty negligible.
However! Since Olbermann staged his return to TV last Monday, and the numbers are interesting.
Current has been stingy about releasing daily figures, but Brian Stelter at the NYT got his hands on last week's numbers and they suggest viewers may actually be turning off O'Donnell in favor of Olbermann.
Per Stelter: "'Countdown' on Current averaged 354,000 total viewers in its first week, and 131,000 viewers ages 25 to 54. “The Last Word” on MSNBC averaged 794,000 total viewers, and 203,000 viewers ages 25 to 54, a drop of about 20 percent from Mr. O’Donnell’s second-quarter average."
That 20% drop is significant, especially considering Current airs on far fewer stations. And while some of it can be attributed to curiosity, it suggests that Current's gamble of essentially presenting the exact same show Olbermann was doing at MSNBC is paying off.
From the looks of it his loyal viewers, who have been making do with Lawrence O'Donnell, really did miss him.

Government researchers in Brazil say they have found one of the world's last uncontacted tribes in a remote corner of the Amazon rainforest.
Aerial pictures revealed by the Brazilian government's agency of indigenous affairs (Funai) showed four large thatched huts fully surrounded by various crops in the Vale do Javari region.
Aloysio Guapindaia, a Funai director, also said they would work to keep the tribe isolated and safe. The tribe is thought to belong to the Pano linguistic group that straddles the border between Brazil, Peru and Bolivia.
Gabriel Elizondo reports from Sao Paulo in Brazil.

(CBS) - When fans jump onto the field during a major league baseball game, there is usually a short moment of triumph followed by tears when security eventually catches them (traditionally with a tackle).
This video has the triumph in spectacular fashion without the tears in the end - check it out.
That guy seriously has some moves! The video was shot by YouTube user "megamark09" (i.e. Mark Lancaster as the video notes) on May 13, 2011, during the Astros versus Mets baseball game. The actual incident took place at the bottom of the 9th inning, and for those who are curious, the Mets beat the Astros 6-4.(CBS) - When fans jump onto the field during a major league baseball game, there is... more

Now I know why my Train Ticket is so friggin high......
The next stop for New Jersey in its debt collection fight with the federal government may be federal court.
Related
Times Topic: Trans-Hudson Passenger Rail Tunnel (ARC)
On Friday, the Transportation Department flatly rejected the state’s arguments for refusing to repay $271 million that was spent on a project, canceled last year, to build a pair of rail tunnels under the Hudson River. The message to Gov. Chris Christie was blunt: Repay now or we will collect the debt the hard way. Plus interest.
In a letter to New Jersey’s senators and representatives in Congress, Ray LaHood, the transportation secretary, warned that his department had “many tools under the Debt Collection Act to recoup the lost federal taxpayer funds, including withholding future state funding from a wide variety of sources.” But “in consideration of the current economic challenges burdening New Jersey,” Mr. LaHood added, he hoped to “develop a workable payment schedule” and avoid having to resort to those collection methods.
Mr. LaHood should not expect to find a check in the mail any time soon. Mr. Christie, who was in Massachusetts on Friday to speak at Harvard University, declared in January that “we are not paying the money back.”
Kevin Roberts, a spokesman for Mr. Christie, said the governor’s staff would “review the decision before determining next steps moving forward.”
One option is to sue the department to try to stop it from seeking to collect, but Mr. Roberts would not say if a lawsuit was being considered.
In the meantime, interest on the debt will pile up quickly. The federal government currently charges interest at a rate of 1 percent a year, which in this case amounts to more than $50,000 a week.
The dispute dates to last fall, when Mr. Christie, a Republican, chose to halt construction on the tunnel project, known as Access to the Region’s Core, or the ARC tunnel, which had just begun and was projected to cost $8.7 billion. The federal government had pledged to pay $3 billion of that cost, and the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey had committed $3 billion more.
But Mr. Christie said he had become alarmed by estimates of potential cost overruns. He decided that New Jersey could not cover those excess costs and, over strenuous objections from Mr. LaHood and Senators Frank R. Lautenberg and Robert Menendez, canceled the project.
When federal transportation officials demanded that New Jersey repay money already spent on the project, Mr. Christie hired Patton Boggs, a Washington law firm, to challenge that demand. The lawyers, who reportedly have billed the state and New Jersey Transit about $800,000, argued that the state stopped the project because of unforeseen costs that were beyond its control.
But in his letter, Mr. LaHood said Mr. Christie had affirmed his support for the project a year ago when New Jersey Transit officials knew that the cost of the tunnel could rise as high as $12 billion.
Mr. Lautenberg and Mr. Menendez, both Democrats, issued a joint statement criticizing the approach taken by Patton Boggs.
“We worked hard to get the parties to negotiate a fair resolution of this conflict,” the senators said. “However, the state’s outside lawyers pursued an all-or-nothing approach, which brings substantial risk to New Jersey taxpayers.”
A federal official involved in the dispute said the state could have offered to repay as little as $1 and the government would have been obligated to negotiate a settlement, a process which could have dragged on for years. All the while, no interest would have accrued on the debt, according to the official, who was not authorized to speak on the record. Now I know why my Train Ticket is so friggin high......

Researchers now think that if you are going to go crazy...smoking weed may speed up the process.
The study is here: http://archpsyc.ama-assn.org/cgi/content/full/archgenpsychiatry.2011.5#YMA05005T1
The NPR article follows:
"Can marijuana use lead to mental health problems popping up sooner?
The question weighs on the minds of parents and doctors. Now there's more evidence, culled from more than 80 different studies, that marijuana can speed up development of serious psychotic illness.
Australian researchers found that marijuana users who developed psychosis were 2.7 years younger than nonusers who became psychotic. Other sorts of substance abuse sped up psychosis by 2 years, but alcohol alone showed no effect. The result were published online by the Archives of General Psychiatry.
What's going on?
The researcher say the results point toward a strong effect for marijuana in vulnerable people:
This study lends weight to the view that cannabis use precipitates schizophrenia and other psychotic disorders...."

December 18,2010 by Sarah Lieberman:Hoodwatch Media affiliate Chicago| It's no secret that in this life we will surely die someday, but sometimes, a time spent in life is too short. Some time over the labor day weekend, Atlanta rapper, and music composer Lord Hector Diono was remixing a previous release in his studio in Decatur Georgia when he received a phone call from a chief insider to his music nucleus, Mr. Dwight Wash of Forrest,Mississippi about 7pm Saturday September 4, this year. Hector was informed that his good friend and confidant Leteaka Coston had passed away earlier that morning from a massive heart attack, dead at the age of 29. Today we announce Hector's decision to release a piano composition he wrote in memory of Miss Coston to the entire world. The single is entitled "I Hope You Shine"(A Letter To Lateaka Coston) and will appear on itunes, one of many music outlets contracted to the rapper he'll use to spread the word about how much Miss Coston meant to him and his closest friends. The free version is available now at http://lordhectordiono.bandcamp.com/track/i-hope-you-shine-a-letter-for-lateaka-coston Hector told his online media staff October 18, 2010, "plain and simple, this will not stand, she was too damn young to go like this". Since then the rapper and music composer has been trying to complete the music project he deemed at times too hard to carry out. Lord Hector finished the project on Saturday December 4, 2010 and sends his deepest regards to her family and life partner Drama Franklin. The record will be released on his indie label; Dark Town Music Group and distributed by Island Def Jam Music on Christmas Day December 25, 2010(Updated December 25, 2010) Now Available on Napster.com| http://music.napster.com/lord-hector-diono-music/album/%E2%80%9Ci-hope-you-shine%E2%80%9D-%28a-letter-to-lateaka-coston%29---single/14079656#s_module Story by by Sarah Lieberman [UPDATE] by Jess Glass August 22,2011 Lord Hector Diono commemorates the 30th birthday of his fallen friend Ms. Lateaka T. Coston, Marietta, Georgia who would've turned 30 years old on August 24, 2011. A memorial tribute single released Friday August 19,2011 entitled "Reach For You" http://www.amazon.com/Reach-For-You-Memorial-Tribute/dp/B005HZV37C/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1314010447&sr=8-1 The single is another attempt to add some closure for our CEO whom I spoke with on August 2, 2011 and came to my own conclusion that he is still very much affected by the sudden loss of Ms. Coston but shows improvement on the length of time he can actually talk about her demise. http://www.cnn.com/2010/WORLD/americas/09/21/chile.miners.drill/index.html
STORY HIGHLIGHTS
The Plan C option is normally used to drill for oil
A company representative says hard rock, need for precision will slow down drilling
The 33 miners have been trapped since August 5
Rescuers are using three drilling methods to reach them
An oil drill that rescuers are using to reach the trapped miners in Chile could provide a faster solution than the other two methods they have employed.
The Plan C drill has been able to reach depths of 1,000 meters in 24 hours, a representative of the company overseeing technical aspects of the operation said.
But officials do not know how long it will take the drill, which is normally used in very different circumstances to drill for oil, to reach the 33 men trapped 700 meters (2,300 feet) underground.
"Once we start drilling in earnest I will have a much better idea of how fast we can make it down the 700 meters to the miners," said Juan Carlos Marin, a representative for Schlumberger who is in Chile to oversee technical aspects of the operation.
He said engineers are dealing with hard rock and a much smaller area than they normally encounter.
"When we drill for oil, we have a much bigger target area of perhaps 50 or 60 meters. Here we have a margin of error of just four meters," Marin said.
Four meters is the approximate width of the tunnels in the San Jose mine complex.
The need for precision in this drilling operation means the drill will move much more slowly, he said, but he gave no precise predictions.
"If we did not have such a specific objective at 700 meters, then we could do this in two days," he said. "But what changes all this is that we have to reach an objective with precision, and so we do not know how long that could take."
For now, the company has told Chilean officials that it could take 40 days to complete the work, he said. He did not say whether time it took to assemble the rig and drill the pilot hole was included in that timeframe.
The rig, which is owned by Canadian Precision Drilling, began operations Sunday and has drilled a pilot hole down 23 meters.
A pipe will now be placed in that pilot hole, which will be encased with a steel tube and cemented in. Marin expects that work to be completed and drilling to begin in earnest within three days.
Two other drills are trying to reach the miners, who have been trapped since the mine's August 5 cave-in. The drills, dubbed Plan A and Plan B, each require two holes to be drilled and have been moving at a rate of 30 or 40 meters a day.
Plan A has drilled a 15-inch shaft to a depth of 333 meters, Mining Minister Laurence Golborne said.
A 12-inch bore hole made by the Plan B drill reached the miners Friday, making it 623 meters into the mine. But it must be widened before the miners can squeeze through -- a process that should take a few weeks. At the full diameter of 28 inches, it has reached a depth of 22 meters, according to Golborne.
Officials already are planning how they will bring the miners to the surface once a bore hole is wide enough for the task. The daunting rescue may require an oxygen-fed cage that will haul them up one at a time.
Previously, officials have said that the workers could be rescued, if all goes well, in late October or early November.
When asked if the Plan C drill would be able to cover 100 meters a day, Marin said "ojala," Spanish for "I hope so."
It also means "that would be nice."
"When I look at their faces on their video they have sent to the surface, I would love to have them out by tomorrow," he said.http://www.cnn.com/2010/WORLD/americas/09/21/chile.miners.drill/index.html
