At the Savannah Film Festival in Georgia, US, Universal Studios President Ron Mayer opened up to recent flops over the past year and felt to let the audience feel the same way of the quality of some of the recent high-profile movies that bombed.
On the film 'Cowboys & Aliens' (On Rotten Tomatoes, a score of 44%), he felt the film wasn't good enough saying "All those little creatures bouncing around were crappy. I think it was a mediocre movie." The Will Ferrell movie 'Land of the Lost' (that has a score of 27%), he felt it was "Just c**p" and on the 2010 remake of 'The Wolfman' (score of 33%), he felt it was the "s***tiest movie the film the studio ever made" saying "The script never got right...the director was wrong. Benicio [del Toro] stunk. It all stunk.", he also referenced 'Babe: Pig in the City' (score of 60%).

LAPD Top Brass is caught on camera being persuaded to allow the "Bruno" commercial film production to continue filming at a tense Prop 8 demonstration downtown in front of City Hall. LAPD had already ejected the film crew twice and threatened Sacha Baron Cohen with arrest for 'inciting a riot'. The Captain make the judgment to grant permission for more filming - if only the crew joins the "south side" where the No On 8 supporters demonstrate. Evidence shows that the Captain and LAPD were unaware if the "Bruno" film crew even had proper filming permits to be at the demonstration.
Was the Captain's judgment sound police policy or an expression of his own personal views on the same-sex marriage issue?
What is the Los Angeles Police Department's responsibility at civil demonstrations - public safety, protecting civil rights, or helping Hollywood get it's shot?
The civil demonstration was November 2, 2008.

The star of "Jaws" has been found resting in a Los Angeles junkyard.
No, not Richard Dreyfuss -- the shark! With the 35th anniversary of Steven Spielberg's classic blockbuster just around the corner, an NPR reporter set out to track down the mechanical beast that struck fear into the hearts of so many.
In order to maximize their control over the creature, the "Jaws" filmmakers built three sharks for their 1975 movie. All created from the same mold, the sharks were dubbed "Bruce" after Spielberg's lawyer, Bruce Ramer. The gigantic metal creatures were 25-feet long and weighed hundreds of pounds. The heads alone came in at 400 lbs. apiece, with jaws the size of a small human.
When reporter and "Jaws"-enthusiast Cory Turner set out to track down Bruce's whereabouts, he went straight to the source -- the movie's director. A spokesman for Steven Spielberg explained that the original Bruces had all been destroyed, as no one had thought to save them.
But theories circulated on a Facebook page for the famous shark that another Bruce might be out there. After a little research, Turner discovered that a fourth shark had indeed been cast from the original mold, just months after its brothers were constructed. The baby of the Bruce family was created for display at Universal Studios Theme Park, where it hung by its tail for fifteen years.
In 1990, the shark was taken down and shipped out to destinations unknown. Turner picked up the phone and started dialing junkyards. He finally found the creature in a yard in the Sun Valley area of Southern California -- just minutes away from Universal. Turner brought the team who built Bruce -- art department members Joe Alves and Roy Arbogast to verify the shark's authenticity.
"It's the real one," Arbogast told Turner after examining the creature. "It's just kinda' nice to see it again after 25 or 30 years. It's amazing that it's still here."
Bruce's discovery couldn't come at a better time. There's talk that Universal might be considering a 3D "Jaws" remake -- with comedian Tracy Morgan in the shark-hunter role. Perhaps Bruce will find his way onto the silver screen once again. The star of "Jaws" has been found resting in a Los Angeles junkyard.

- Meet the Universal Monsters Starting Lineup!-
ROTTEN TOMATOES
For centuries, monster legends have romped over geographic boundaries to permeate folklore stories around the globe. And for decades, ever since Universal first began creating monster flicks in 1923 and subsequently introduced the concept of the horror franchise, movies have made a select few of these monsters legendary through their birth and occasional resurrection on screen. With The Wolfman making his hairy return to theaters on February 12, we at RT thought it was time to recognize the journey that a few of the most iconic and classic Universal Monsters that have made over the years to blaze a path in not only cinema, but popular culture, breakfast tables, and beyond.

Shannon Lee, the daughter and heir of martial-arts expert Bruce Lee, is trying to add some pow to the late movie star's legacy.
(McBride, S., 2009, October 23, par.1)
In a bid to tap into growing interest in Mr. Lee in China and to develop her father into a powerhouse global brand, Ms. Lee last year bought back the rights to his image from General Electric Co.'s Universal Studios, which had held them since the late 1980s. "They didn't put the effort behind it I felt should be put behind it," she says. Universal declined to comment.
(McBride, S., 2009, October 23, par.2)
Then she formed Bruce Lee Enterprises, a licensing company, and LeeWay Media Group, a production company, to raise his profile. Ms. Lee also consulted with the estates of other famous people, including Elvis Presley and John Wayne, to learn more about how to successfully revive a deceased icon's image.
(McBride, S., 2009, October 23, par.3)
In recent years, the Bruce Lee brand has brought in around $1 million a year, the estate says. With the new push, Ms. Lee hopes she can squeeze $5 million to $10 million from it annually. She has already signed deals with companies ranging from Lucky Brand Dungarees Inc. to Charter Communications Inc. Charter is using her father's image...
(McBride, S., 2009, October 23, par.4)
Mr. Lee's image is potentially worth seven figures annually, according to David Reeder, vice president of Greenlight. "He's truly a global icon, and there aren't many of those around." While there are "probably 30, 40 of those people that really resonate" in the U.S., he adds, internationally the list shrinks to just a handful, including Michael Jackson, Muhammad Ali and Bruce Lee.

From the story: You don’t have to break out your eye patch or learn to preface every statement with “Aarrrrr” to be a modern radio pirate. All you really need is a computer and the desire to be heard. There is a potential audience of 1.6 billion internet users worldwide and, as the technology that enables digital broadcasting continues to evolve, its ability to compete with traditional analog radio also increases. For example, both Shoutcast and Ustream now have iPhone apps that allow listeners to receive digital broadcasts wherever they go....

This bit of art, on display in the backlot at Universal Studios, first showed up on Twitter a few weeks back. I'm not sure why Universal has decided to put this up on display as part of the backlot studio tour, and not online for everyone to see, but that's Universal for you. Anyway, Collider now has a bigger, cleaner, high res shot of the first promo art for Nick Frost and Simon Pegg's new movie Paul directed by Greg Mottola, that's being shot as we speak. It doesn't show us what the alien looks like but it's a pretty good promo photo and it sets the mood for what's to come. and they won't be buying any more spec scripts this year.
"Such a move is not unprecedented. Studios often run through their fiscal-year budgets and sometimes make deals with writers and their agents that keep projects percolating but delay payments until the beginning of the next fiscal year, when budgets are replenished.
It's unusual, however, for a major studio like Universal to implement such a move in mid-September, dealmakers say.
A studio insider denied that development has been frozen completely. Rather, the insider said, U has solidified its 2010 slate and has made commitments to the projects it feels will fill its 2011 slate. The studio doesn't need to spend money on future projects right now because it essentially knows which pictures are going to get made over the next two years.
Still, the development is a blow to the dealmaking community, particularly writers' reps. Across the post-strike studio landscape, writers' reps are having a hard time making sizable deals for clients. Reps say despite some assertions in the press that the strike was worthwhile, they are dealing with residual animosity toward scribes that started a slide from past quotes -- a dip that was cemented by the economic collapse.
Writers are now getting fractions of what they were paid before the strike, and new scribes are being presented with take-it-or-leave-it deals calling them to work for scale, reps said.
U isn't the only studio putting the brakes on development. Despite making a recent multimillion-dollar deal to capture Beatles song rights for a "Yellow Submarine" remake involving Robert Zemeckis, Disney has reportedly slowed its development pace as well. However, Disney denied recent reports that it has frozen development.
Word is that Warner Bros. is paying scale to writers who don't have established quotes, and most studios are employing one-step writer deals.
"Civility has gone out the window," said one rep. "

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Movie studio Universal Pictures on Friday responded to a lawsuit filed earlier this week against its parent company and comedian Sacha Baron Cohen calling it “frivolous” and saying its claims were “baseless.”
California resident Richelle Olson sued Cohen and Universal Pictures’ parent NBC Universal, the media division of General Electric Co., in Los Angeles Superior Court over an encounter with Cohen when he was filming his movie “Bruno.”
Olson claims Cohen showed up at a charity bingo event in 2007 as the flamboyant gay Austrian character Bruno and pushed her. Olson says she fell and was surrounded by cameramen who attacked her. Later, she says she fainted, hit her head causing bleeding to her brain, and must now use a wheelchair.
But in its statement, Universal said: “filmed footage of the full encounter, which took place more than two years ago, clearly shows that Ms. Olson was never touched or in any way assaulted by Sacha Baron Cohen or any member of the production and suffered no injury.”
Universal said “we expect each of the defendants to be fully vindicated.”
“Bruno,” which lands in theaters in July, follows Cohen’s 2006 surprise hit “Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan,” which made more than $260 million at worldwide box offices.
That comedy featured the comic actor in the role of a naive and rude journalist from Kazakhstan named Borat, who has unscripted meetings with dumbstruck Americans.
“Borat” attracted several lawsuits from individuals Cohen encountered while shooting that film. Both Borat and Bruno are characters Cohen invented for his “Da Ali G Show,” which aired on British and American television.
