Two French vegans are on trial after their 11-month-old baby daughter died from vitamin deficiency as she was only being fed breast milk. Sergipe and Joel Le Moaligou who are strict vegans called the emergency services in March 2008 after their baby Louise started sweating profusely and crying, and appeared to have no energy.By the time the ambulance arrived at their home north of Paris, she was already dead.Baby Louise weighed a mere 12lb, compared to an average 17.5lb for a child her age, and was deathly pale according to French media. An autopsy showed that she was suffering from a vitamin A and B12 deficiency, which experts say increases a child's sensitivity to infections.French prosecutors claim the vitamin deficiency may have been linked to the mother's diet, and also say that the couple failed to follow medical advice to hospitalise the baby who was suffering from bronchitis. The parents, who also have a 13-year-old daughter who didn't suffer from any vitamin deficiencies, became vegan after seeing "a television programme about how cattle were taken to abattoirs," said the mother's lawyer. The parents are still vegan and "are completely aware of the mistake they made," said the father's lawyer.
If convicted, the couple could face up to 30 years in prison.

BROWNSVILLE - Police say the parents of a 12 year-old girl forced her to live locked in a closet with no light and minimal contact with the outside world. Police say no one had a clue about the abuse, not neighbors or school officials, until the girl's brother spoke up. When police went to the family's home on the 400 block of Jo Ann Lane, they found the girl locked inside the closet.
CHANNEL 5 NEWS has video and pictures of the space were the girl was confined. She was allegedly only let out so she could go to school, eat, or use the bathroom during the day. The bucket in the space was her bathroom at night. Police say she was forced to clean it every morning.
We told neighbor Cynthia Santiago about the way the girl was forced to live. She knew something wasn't right when she saw police last week. "I just saw cops taking pictures and detectives. I don't know. That's a shock!"
Police say this was torture endured by the child for more than a year. The landlord tells us she didn't suspect any problems. She let us inside. Police say the room the girl was living in had no electricity and she would use the light coming through the cracks to do her homework."
The girl's mother told police she kept the girl locked up because she didn't want her stealing food from the refrigerator. But police say the girl needed to eat. They say she was malnourished and looked like an 8 or 9 year-old instead of 12.
Police say one of the girl's three brothers finally told someone at school. He was worried about his sister. Sgt. Jimmy Manrrique of the Brownsville Police Department says, "It's very commendable that the young man was able to speak up in a school setting."
Police say that call for help saved the child. Santiago is grateful the girl is out of the house. She says, "God doesn't bring kids into this world so they can suffer like that."
The girl's parents are in jail. Leticia and Alfredo Ines are charged with injury to a child and unlawful restraint. The mother is a Wal-Mart employee. The step-father is a maintenance worker with Brownsville Independent School District. Late Monday, BISD personnel said Alfredo Ines was placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation.
CHANNEL 5 NEWS wanted to know why no at the girl's school noticed problems. A District spokesperson says they're now looking into the situation.
A hearing is set for next week to determine if the girl will stay in foster care.

This is the moment a mother recklessly pushes a pram over a railway crossing in front of a moving train.
The impatient mother ignored a red warning light at the level crossing, and began to cross the uneven tracks, while other pedestrians waited patiently for the train to pass.
As she crossed, the tracksuit-clad woman realised the Sprinter was accelerating towards her and broke into a run to reach the other side.
The incident, which left observers stunned and horrified, was captured on CCTV at Wareham station in Dorset.
It has now been realised by Network Rail as part of a new safety campaign, Would It Kill You To Wait?
This year 12 people have died at crossings, with five of these in September alone. Another 189 incidents have been classified as 'narrowly avoiding' a collision.
The unidentified woman had been crossing at a spot known for near misses. Councillor David Budd, who supporting a campaign to install barriers at the crossing, said there had been 10 'near misses' at the crossing in the past year.
'This woman is doing exactly what many people do at this crossing - thinking they can get away with rushing across without looking,' he said.
'It's reckless whether she was pushing a pram or not, but all sorts of people do it to save time.
'They don't seem to realise that trains are not going to stop for them like a car might.'
Other footage released by Network Rail shows a pair of OAPs sauntering across the same junction, a van just inches from a collision after it reverses quickly out of the way of a train, and a car with a heavily crumpled bonnet after a collision with a Sprinter.
Iain Coucher, Network Rail chief executive, said: 'The rules around level crossings are clear and simple.
'When the lights flash or the barriers are down, don't cross, a train is approaching.
'Signs asking users to stop, look and listen or reminding you to contact the signaller before crossing are clear and must be followed.
'We understand that people have busy lives and waiting can be frustrating.
'Our campaign asks "would it kill you to wait?" because sadly we know that not waiting can result in tragedy and there's no excuse for that.'
Among the worst excuses offered to National Rail by irresponsible motorists and pedestrians are people thinking the train would slow down to let them through, thinking the train driver was giving way when he sounded the horn and the 'sat-nav told me to turn left so I just kept going'.
Excuse me for this rant in advance HOW BLOODY STUPID ARE THESE PEOPLE the mother (using the term loosly) pushing her baby across the tracks infront of an oncoming train looks like Vicki Pollard & quite possibly the same or less intelligence as her, but the excuses given for this behaviour are even more stupid the red lights translate to STOP so do it.
Local authorities & National rail spend millions on safety for these people who just throw it back in there faces, if they were to have an accident my guess is if they survived a compensation claim would be coming from them, as people who are that stupid refuse to take responsibilty for there own actions & blame anyone but themselves, they need to grow up.
I feel sympathy for the drivers of these trains who watch people being killed infront of them due to stupidity.
People these stupid fools need education then treated as the idiots that they are. This is the moment a mother recklessly pushes a pram over a railway crossing in front... more

They came from around the world hoping to spend a high school year immersed in the culture and joys of America.
Exchange student Carlos Villareal of Colombia says he was underfed and kept in "an unsafe environment."
Instead, five young foreign exchange students found themselves caught in a nightmare of neglect, malnourishment and abandonment by those supposed to protect them.
Now those five -- natives of countries stretching from Norway to Tanzania to Colombia -- are back home telling friends of a different America than they expected. And their brief visit reverberates in America as a United States senator demands accountability and reform, a Pennsylvania district attorney seeks criminal charges and the U.S. State Department concedes it failed to protect kids coming to America. They came from around the world hoping to spend a high school year immersed in the... more

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — An out-of-work widower who abandoned nine of his children at a hospital under Nebraska's new safe haven law said he was overwhelmed without his wife and just "fell apart."
"I hope they know I love them," Gary Staton told KETV. "I hope their future is better without me around them."
The unique law allows caregivers to abandon babies and teenagers alike at hospitals without fear of prosecution. Originally intended to protect infants, it was expanded in a legislative compromise to protect any "child." Some have interpreted that to mean anyone under 19.
Staton anonymously left the five boys and four girls — ages 1 to 17 — at Creighton University Medical Center's emergency room on Wednesday night. He has a 10th child, a daughter who is 18 and was not dropped off.
A number of relatives have volunteered to take the siblings, said Kathie Osterman, a spokeswoman for the state department Health and Human Services.
Staff members were doing required background checks Friday in hopes of placing the children in the next few days, she said.
Staton said his wife died early last year, shortly after delivering their youngest child. He said he quit his job because of his family responsibilities but couldn't pay rent or utilities or take care of his kids.
"I was with her for 17 years, and then she was gone," he said of his late wife. "What was I going to do? We raised them together. I didn't think I could do it alone. I fell apart. I couldn't take care of them."
Staton said he surrendered them so they would be safe.
A call Friday to a number listed for Staton went unanswered.OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — An out-of-work widower who abandoned nine of his children at... more

A New York City first-grader was forced to walk the streets alone after he was dumped from a school bus after it had reached the end of the line, the New York Daily News reported Tuesday.
School officials said they don't know who put Jaeden Vasquez, 5, on the school bus — especially since he wasn't even supposed to be on it in the first place. He lives across the street from the school in the Bronx.
His mother, Aileen Bonilla says the school apologized but that "sorry" wouldn't have replaced her son if he had gotten killed.
"You just let a child off a bus when no one's there for him?" Bonilla told the Daily News. "You don't know what could have happened."
Jaeden approached a woman on the street and told her he was lost. The woman called the school and brought the boy there in a cab, the Daily News reported.
School officials claim that don't know who the school bus driver was, but he may have acted inappropriately. They have launched an investigation.
Five-year-old children are not supposed to be let off school buses unless an adult is waiting, according to Department of Education rules. If an adult is not there, the driver is required to bring the child back to school, the Daily News reported.A New York City first-grader was forced to walk the streets alone after he was dumped... more

It's a situation fraught with so many twists and turns that if you saw it on a movie screen you might not believe it.
It began when a 19-year-old girl from the town of Lancaster, Ohio was accused of molesting a 15-year-old boy. Jane Crane was allowed to stay at the child's Columbus-area home when allegations surfaced that her stepfather was being abusive.
But something apparently clicked between the girl and the underage son of those providing her temporary refuge. She's since been charged with unlawful sexual conduct, after allegedly having physical relations at least twice with the underage boy.
So far, the story is somewhat sad, but not that unusual.
But here's where it takes an odd turn. The teen became pregnant as a result of the encounter and paternity tests prove the boy is the father of the little girl, who was born in late April.
Now a court has ordered the youngster to pay $50 a month child support, despite the fact the act that resulted in the child's birth was apparently illegal.
Crane, meanwhile, could face up to 18 months in jail if she's convicted, and that's now prompted the boy's family to try and gain custody of the newborn. The baby is currently living with Crane and her family not far away.
The parents of the now 16-year-old say that because of the allegations against the stepfather, they don't think their granddaughter is safe and they want to take her home with them. They're also outraged that a teenager said to be the victim of a crime has to pay child support.
The unidentified boy's parents claim their son is having nightmares and problems sleeping and that his life has been changed forever because of his naïveté. His folks are hoping for a plea bargain to resolve the issue, even as the young mother awaits her own day in court this week. It's a situation fraught with so many twists and turns that if you saw it on a... more

A boy of two was left on his own for the weekend, imprisoned in a flooded kitchen, after a woman went out 'to party', a court heard yesterday.
Police, called in by concerned neighbours, arrived to find a horrifying scene.
The little boy, wearing a babygro and pants, had been penned into the kitchen with a baby gate. He was standing barefoot in several inches of water, a jury at Lincoln Crown Court was told.
Kelly Tollerton, a 22-year-old mother of two from Lincoln, abandoned the child over a weekend in November 2006 'so 'in her own words, she could go and party', prosecutor Felicity Gerry told the jury.
