Whether it's a simple log cabin in Illinois or a mansion in Hyannisport, Massachusetts, presidential homes hold a special place in the hearts of Americans.
Hawaii's legislature will now consider honoring President Obama's home.
The Punahou Circle apartments could soon be placed on the National Register of Historic Places if Representative Tom Brower has his way.
"We're looking for the place that reminds the most about President Obama and he spent his formative years at the Punahou Circle apartments, visited his grandmother there before her death, so we're hoping to place this on the National Registry of Historic Places," he said.
Getting a structure on the National Register of Historic Places is a lengthy process.
And Brower admits this is a rather unusual case.
"It would be the entire building. We could do the apartment itself but we're researching what would make the most sense. I think the building as a whole has become a symbol though to Obama's home in Hawaii," he said.
President Obama lived in the tenth floor apartment with his late grandmother when he attended Punahou School in the seventies.
The building is owned by the Emma Kwock Chun corporation.
"I haven't talked to the owner directly but I have heard that he's open to these discussions. So I wanted to introduce this resolution to get the ball rolling on talks and we invite him to submit testimony. We will contact him," Brower said.
A spokesman for the owner has said the apartment has "significant historic value."
The president did live briefly in Manoa Valley, but Brower believes the Punahou Circle building represents a longer and more important period in his life.
Since the United States has become more urbanized, it was probably only a matter of time before a president's childhood home was a high-rise.
"From my understanding, this may be one of the first times that it's an apartment rather than a home that has become the dwelling for the president," Brower added.
It could be years before a decision on the historic place registration is made.Whether it's a simple log cabin in Illinois or a mansion in Hyannisport,... more

I came upon this while looking up the history of, the now defunct, "News World" and thought I'd have some fun sharing the results.
For those who didn't know, here's where and why Current began.
(psssst...check out the rambling rant at the bottom of the c/net page. Seem familiar?)
