Tyson Foods settles a suit over drugs in chickens
(oh really?)
Tyson Foods Inc. has settled a multimillion-dollar lawsuit filed by two competitors, including Maryland's Perdue Farms, alleging that the Arkansas company used deceptive marketing to lie about its antibiotics use in poultry. But now the company faces lawsuits from consumers.
(my comment)
Last night I was cooking dinner at my mothers, recently I had explained to her that Tyson Chicken was no longer able to advertise that they sell chickens labeled "raised without antibiotics". My mom had bought some chicken for us to cook and she brought the package over to me and said, "look at this, there aren't any antibiotics in this chicken", as she showed the label to me. I was confused, telling her I know that I read where Tyson's had been sued over this, and was no longer able to tell consumers that their chickens are "raised without antibiotics". I grabbed my camera, and stated; I am going to research this further and put this on Current.com tomorrow.
Later that evening I did a little search, the article that is my url, will explain the lawsuit and some of the pending consumer suits. On down in the article from themorningcall.com, it says and I quote:
At issue is a now-abandoned advertising campaign in which Tyson claimed its chickens were raised without antibiotics. The assertion was sanctioned by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, which later rescinded its approval, instead allowing Tyson to say its poultry was raised without antibiotics "that impact antibiotic resistance in humans."
The USDA has since ordered Tyson to remove that labeling as well, giving the company a June 18 deadline, which has now been extended to July 9, according to Mickelson. Tyson had volunteered to change its labeling, but sued the USDA over the quick deadline.
(my comment)
This June 18 deadline, was extended to July 9; my mother bought this chicken on July 30. The sell by date was August 3.
The Label says:
Chicken Raised WITHOUT Antibiotics
That impact antibiotic resistance in humans
No Hormones Administered
No Artificial Ingredients
Either Tyson has managed to slide by with yet another "postponement" of their USDA order to remove this false ad, or they are just pushing the false claim, and when caught, will gladly pay the fine, knowing that it may cost them money, but the fine is lower than the profit they make selling it to consumers, who buy their product in good faith.
We had chicken and drugs last night~ (thanks Tyson's)

The long-running spat between federal regulators and Tyson Foods Inc. over a hot-selling line of chicken took a new turn as the Agriculture Department ordered Tyson to stop using its antibiotic-free label by June 18.
The agency determined that Tyson is routinely using an antibiotic in its chick hatcheries -- information disclosed by Tyson to the department only recently.
In another development Tuesday, Russia and Japan suspended imports of chicken processed in Arkansas by Tyson and rival producers after routine testing indicated that a flock of Tyson breeding hens in the northwest corner of that state had been exposed to a mild strain of bird flu. Tyson's shares fell $1.47, or 8%, to $16.98 in 4 p.m. New York Stock Exchange composite trading. The long-running spat between federal regulators and Tyson Foods Inc. over a... more
