Thousands of people face disruption to their Christmas travel plans as snow and cold weather continue to paralyse the British Isles. Most annoyingly for some of us (I am supposed to fly out of Heathrow tomorrow morning to spend Christmas with my family in Sweden) Heathrow is at a standstill since Saturday when 5 inches of snow fell in a matter of hours. The mega airport has been described as a "warzone" as passengers have been sleeping rough all over the airport. According to one passenger the spots around power points were the most sought after, resulting in people and families sleeping in the toilets to get access to electricity for their computers. British Airways is hoping 60 flights will depart Heathrow on Monday morning, but dozens more have been cancelled. Other airlines are in the same situation and it's believed that the delays and cancellations will continue all week. BAA has apologised to people who were forced to sleep in the terminal but Transport Secretary Philip Hammond said aviation was a "safety-first business".Gatwick, Stansted, Edinburgh and Birmingham airports are open.Meanwhile, the Met Office has warned of more snow and ice in many parts of the country.
