The 'apocalyptic' media frenzy post Fukushima which displaced the real disaster story and horrific loss of life wrought by the earthquake & tsunami, sickened Japanese born Mari Shibata. Along with WORLDbytes volunteers she investigates the fear factor. Why did a nuclear incident affecting only a small area fuel global meltdown stories? In an interview with the Director of the Science Media Centre we learn of news values shaped by a concern to terrify people, journalists removed from stories for being too measured and scientists accused of lying. Granted unique access to Oldbury, the oldest nuclear power station in the world we learn how seriously safety is taken and due to fears of terrorism post 9/11 its tragic shut down to visitors. Through talking to relatives in Japan we learn of the progress being made to clear up the real mess made by a natural disaster, a story neglected by the Western media. The 'apocalyptic' media frenzy post Fukushima which displaced the real... more

An important symbol of South London and a key feature of the city’s skyline, the Battersea Power Station, has been left to decay for more than twenty years. Created by Gilbert Scott in 1935, the building has slowly rotted away after both station’s A and B were decommissioned in 1975 and 1983 respectively. The much-loved monument is listed on the English Heritage’s “Buildings at Risk” register.

Thousands of activists are expected to converge in Kingsnorth to protest about controversial plans for a new coal-fired power station.
Police have cancelled leave and rest days that clash with the week-long protest and have arranged public meetings to put residents' minds at rest.
The protest - on a field next to the power plant - is expected to see 2,000 climate campaigners swarm into the area on August 4 to 10.
,,,,,,,To plan to build a new coal fired power station given every thing we now know about fosil fuels & climate change is madness gone stark raving bonkers !
I hope the protesters give it a good go. Kent police have underlined a zero tolerence policy and stated that policing the protest would be the largest operation in the forces history. Lets hope the protest makes the news for the right reasons and the plans get shelved Thousands of activists are expected to converge in Kingsnorth to protest about... more
