Here's your exclusive first look at a new star-map of Battlestar Galactica's Twelve Colonies, designed by writer Jane Espenson and science advisor Kevin Grazier. And Espenson and Grazier explained to us how twelve colonies can fit in one star system.
Not only is this map a thing of great beauty, but it's totally official — Grazier was science advisor for Battlestar Galactica from the very beginning, and helped to define a lot of the show's concepts. And Espenson, as the original showrunner for the prequel series Caprica, had to do a lot of thinking about exactly how the Twelve Colonies were laid out. This info comes straight from the creators — and from the showrunner's bible for BSG and Caprica. And Grazier, who works at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, verifies that the info in this map is "scientifically plausible."
We're excited to present an exclusive high-res image of the map, which sells for $14.95 from Quantum Mechanix and measures 27" by 39". This is one item that should definitely be on your Dradis.
We asked Espenson and Grazier some questions about the map, and they ended up telling us a lot more about the science and backstory of Battlestar Galactica:

It's Kinect Day! Before we get there, what is happening on television with G4, DirecTV, SyFy, Caprica, Battlestar Galactica, and more? Hear about Wonder Woman and Smallville? The controversial and provocative Caprica is no more. Syfy has pulled the plug on the once promising prequel to Battlestar Galactica before it could even finish its first full season. Fans of the show are fighting back, however, citing Syfy's poor marketing and management of the show for its current ratings woes. You can read more about how fans are responding here:

The Hollywood Reporter says SyFy and executive producer Ron Moore are considering another spin off for the popular series Battlestar Galatica.
"That world is so rich. We're sitting down with Ron Moore and his team."
No news on what they're considering for the spin off plot wise, but I'm in a mix of yay and slight worry that BSG might become over re made. Yet with the awesomeness of Caprica at the moment, one more spin off won't hurt. The Hollywood Reporter says SyFy and executive producer Ron Moore are considering... more

This Battlestar Galactica spin-off is as notable for its design as it is for its acting. The Caprican society is technologically advanced, with their virtual reality clubs and robot butlers. 'Caprica,' a prequel to 'Battlestar Galactica,' is a family drama that deals with the ethical issues of artificial intelligence
Science fiction's foundations are built on the premise of noble scientists creating fabulous technologies for the betterment of mankind.
"Caprica," the new science-fiction drama from the creators of "Battlestar Galactica," differs from that idea.
"It's about how groundbreaking technology often has an engine -- personal motive -- that's built on not so high-minded principles, like greed and envy," said "Caprica" executive producer David Eick, from Los Angeles.
The series kicks off at 9 p.m. Friday on SyFy.
Eick described "Caprica" as a science-fiction drama and family saga that explores the morality of artificial intelligence. The show is from the same creative team that was behind "Battlestar Galactica," which critics hailed as one of the best science-fiction series television has ever offered. "Battlestar" ended its run on SyFy last year.
The new series takes place 58 years before the robotic Cylon race's attack on the Twelve Colonies in an attempt to exterminate its humans creators. The saga of a ragtag fleet of human survivors fleeing the Cylons and searching for a haven was at the center of "Battlestar
