Tiger Woods’ shocking cheating admission and subsequent parade of alleged paramours has resulted in more than just unending fodder for the tabloids. The golf superstar has also given comfort to spouses who have long suspected their partners are incapable of fidelity, says Maureen Canning, a licensed marriage and family therapist who works with addiction facilities such as Meadows in Wickenburg, Ariz.
“Woods has created a dialogue among couples, giving them a definition for a serious problem that’s plagued relationships,” Canning says. “Women are finally realizing, ‘I’m not the only one.’”
Until recently, sex addiction seemed like an affliction exclusive to show-biz types. In 2000, self-described sex addict/new husband Michael Douglas reportedly signed a prenup that included a $5 million “straying fee” should he bed someone other than wife Catherine Zeta-Jones. R&B singer Eric Benet attended sex rehab in 2003 after admittedly cheating on then-wife Halle Berry. David Duchovny, who also plays a sex addict on TV’s Californication, sought treatment—and saved his 13-year marriage to actress Tea Leoni — by going to Meadows in 2008. And last year, on the heels of Woods’ confession, ESPN baseball analyst Steve Phillips was caught cavorting with his 22 year-old production assistant, cried sex addiction and headed to rehab.Tiger Woods’ shocking cheating admission and subsequent parade of alleged... more

Things used to be pretty straightforward: You were involved in a stable and fulfilling long-term relationship, but nevertheless the temptations were many and practicing strict monogamy proved way too hard. Eventually, you were caught and you had to decide whether to call it quits or to go back to your partner, admit your full responsibility, beg for forgiveness, and promise that it was never going to happen again. Nowadays, however, there may be a third option: You can claim that you are a victim of sexual addiction, simply unable to manage your sexual urges despite what you know is best for you.
This term has been steadily gaining recognition among the public, helped by several high profile cases of celebrities who checked themselves into "sex addiction rehab" after their infidelities were made public. Self-help groups such as Sex Addicts Anonymous and Sexaholics Anonymous have sprung up in the last few decades, following the 12-step system first made popular by Alcoholics Anonymous. There is even a proliferation of fictional characters from recent movies, novels, and TV series who are described as sex addicts and regularly attend meetings organized by these kinds of groups. The proponents of the concept routinely argue that sexual addiction and substance addiction are analogous syndromes, with both of them rendering the individual a slave to a particular source of gratification at the expense of everything else in his/her life. But is there strong scientific evidence supporting a common physiological basis between these versions of compulsive behavior?
The answer depends strongly in the definition of "addiction" that we choose to adopt, and this is by no means a trivial matter.

1. Sexual addiction is generally defined as a compulsion to seek out sex at any cost. It can embrace any form of compulsive sexual activity from masturbation, to serial relationships, to paying for sex.
2. Like cocaine and methamphetamines, sex dramatically increases levels of dopamine, the “feel-good” neurotransmitter in the brain.
3. After drugs, alcohol and shopping, sex is the fourth most common reason for debt in the UK. One in four callers to the UK Insolvency Helpline blames their financial problems on paying for sex.
4. Dr Marty Klein, a psychotherapist and the author of America's War On Sex: The Attack On Law, Lust, & Liberty, says: “Feeling out of control isn't the same as being out of control, and an unwillingness to exert self-discipline isn't the same thing as being addicted. People who masturbate too much, look at too much porn, or cheat on their partners are not ‘addicts'. They just don't like the consequences of their decisions. They may be impulsive, or angry, or lonely, but we [psychotherapists] know how to help them.”
5. Most self-confessed sex addicts are also dependent on other substances and it is often their use of alcohol and drugs that forces them to seek help. Recovering sex addicts are put on a 12-step programme, much like that of recovering alcoholics and drug addicts, with Sex Addicts Anonymous (www.saa-recovery.org).

Experts say the number of sex addicts is rising — and, contrary to popular opinion, they are not all men. “In America, 30% of people coming in for treatment for sex addiction are female,” says Don Serratt, director of Life Works, which offers sex-addiction treatment in the UK. In this country, few women present themselves as sex addicts, but that doesn’t mean the problem is less prevalent. “They’ll come for help with alcoholism, drug addiction or depression and, in the course of treatment, the sex addiction, the root cause of the other addictions, will be uncovered,” Serratt says.
Susan Cheever, a self-confessed sex addict who has just written Desire: Where Sex Meets Addiction (Simon & Schuster), agrees that this blurring of the lines between the compulsions of love and sex is common among women. “If there is a difference between sex and love addiction, I don’t know what it is,” she says. “Sometimes people say they just fall in love too frequently. Are they saying they don’t want to have sex with those people? Love addict sounds nicer for sure.”
As Cheever recounts in the book, there were times when every man who crossed her path was fresh prey, from removal men to bookshop reps — taking in three husbands and her mother’s oncologist on the way. “Whenever there was a crisis,” she admits, “I found a man to take the edge off the feelings of helplessness and pain” — regardless of the upheaval she risked unleashing on her husbands and two children. “Adultery is the drink-driving of sex addiction,” she observes.
A bleaker story emerges, however. “My parents spent a great deal of time telling me that I was unattractive and would never find a husband. Perhaps proving my parents wrong was one of my motivations. If so, I didn’t realize it at the time. It’s tricky, because addiction to other people, specifically addiction to a sex partner, is the only one that is applauded and embraced by our culture, despite the fact that there is more collateral damage than with drugs or alcohol.”
It is a pattern Serratt is all too familiar with. “Female sex addicts crave intimacy, ” he says. “They’ll use sex and seduction to create that closeness with a guy — but, once they get it, they freak out and move on to the next one.”
Yet, although they crave intimacy, Serratt believes female sex addicts are subconsciously terrified by it. Because of their low self-esteem, they are scared of a man getting to know the “real” them. “Sex addicts will often say, ‘Oh, I can never meet the right man’, but that’s because as soon as a guy turns up who is everything they want, it scares them and they kill it. Once they’re in a relationship, they’ll begin to find fault and start saying ‘Oh, he’s lazy/he’s fat/he’s broke’, then dump him. Sex addicts also have poor discernment skills for choosing boyfriends. They tend to go for superficial qualities, because what they’re attracted to is a fantasy.” Experts say the number of sex addicts is rising — and, contrary to popular... more

Attach sexuality to any goods or services and it blows up right ???
Love it or hate it, sex sells !!!
But why exactly ??? is it biological wiring or are we obsessed with it??
I mean there is so much in life, nature and humor all around. There's food and art and yet somehow nothing gets the attention that sex does...
and is it something we should look at, challenge and change within us? Or do we just accept the somewhat exploitation of our humanness and our human desires ...
What do you think ????Attach sexuality to any goods or services and it blows up right ???
