Rescue workers struggled to release trapped people from a derailed train on Monday, April 12 in the aftermath of an accident that killed nine people and injured at least 28 near the city of Bolzano in northern Italy. Reports from the scene suggested that the landslide which derailed the train had been caused by a burst irrigation pipe causing mud, rocks and branches to come rushing down on top of it.
Firemen and workers struggled to secure the carriages and get access to the trapped passengers as the train hung dangerously over the edge of a cliff above a river.
The local train was carrying commuters and students and had come off the tracks in a narrow gorge on the line from the town of Castelbello to Laces in the Alto Adige region.
The train had slid down a slope before running into a line of trees that had saved the packed train from plunging into a river below. One of the carriages was left hanging precariously over the water and firefighters were reported to have used cables to prevent it from slipping further down the mountain.Rescue workers struggled to release trapped people from a derailed train on Monday,... more
