www.ArtofPeaceFoundation.org. As a show of solidarity with the Dalai Lama and Tibet, 20 artists have come together to release this historic double album on the eve of the Beijing Olympics. These recordings - some original for the project and some acoustically driven recordings of previously released songs - express our common vulnerabilities and experiences in pursuing happiness, peace and freedom. Collectively, these tracks represent a heartfelt message of support for the path of compassion and non-violence championed by the Dalai Lama. Begun in May of 2008 and completed in two months, the outpouring of support from all corners of the world was unparalleled. Funds raised from the album by the Foundation will go to support peace initiatives and Tibetan cultural preservation projects important to the Dalai Lama.
As the start of the Bejing Olympics nears, we applaud the athletes and the people of China in their accomplishment.
Unfortunately promises made by the Chinese Government to the I.O.C. have been broken over and over, including China's promise to remove the "Great Firewall of China" which blocks access to the internet and information.
Journalists who are reporting on the Olympics are still being blocked and hindered as of today.www.ArtofPeaceFoundation.org. As a show of solidarity with the Dalai Lama and Tibet,... more

That was back in April. who cares?
The 5,500 tons of carbon dioxide pollution that the worldwide torch relay emitted is anything but a memory.
To put 5,500 tons into perspective:
A round trip flight between New York and Los Angeles produces 2.4 tons of C02,
driving 12,000 miles in a 2006 Ford Explorer, 7.83 tons.
The British Virgin Islands emit 84,000 tons of C02 per year,
the European Union emits 3.1 billion per year
and the United States 6 billion per year.
A 250-guest wedding, assuming that 125 attendees spend the night at a high-end hotel, will produce 9 tons of C02.
see link to know how 5,500 tons was emitted.

A hundred Tibetans and Tibet supporters freeze for five minutes in gorgeous Grand Central Station in New York. They hang a banner reading "One World, One Dream, Free Tibet", drape the Tibetan flag over their bodies, and freeze in protest against China's illegal occupation of Tibet and its human rights violations against the Tibetan people.
The activists also raise their closed fists in the air to show solidarity with the Tibetan people, in a gesture reminiscent of the 1968 Olympics black power salute.
It's a clever and creative action by the Students for a Free Tibet interns in NYC, and you should all check it out as one of the many means through which ordinary concerned citizens can engage in nonviolent and direct political action.

BEIJING; The U.S. track and field team's protest of the women's 100-meter final at the Olympics was rejected Sunday night.
The Americans asked that the race be reviewed because of a possible false start by Torri Edwards, one of the country's sprinters.
Edwards herself said she thought she false-started. She wound up finishing last as Shelly-Ann Fraser led a Jamaican sweep of medals in the dash.Associated Press

BEIJING -- Half a world away, Kamanhaus is divided.
Actually, LeRoy Kaman would probably take issue with calling his home Kamanhaus. He'd prefer "the Kamans' house."
And if LeRoy Kaman turns on the television in Grand Rapids, Mich., on Monday morning to watch his son Chris play basketball, he'll be cheering against him.
"My dad is not so thrilled," Kaman said. "My mom has always supported me, she's great. My dad is kind of negative about it. He's like: 'You're not German, you're an American citizen.'"
But the Los Angeles Clippers center is not only an American citizen, he's a German citizen now, too, in possession of a freshly minted Deutschland passport that was processed earlier this summer, allowing him to join the German national team for the Beijing Olympics.
So when Germany takes the court against Team USA on Monday at 8 a.m. ET for its final game of this tournament, the man in the middle playing opposite Dwight Howard and Chris Bosh will be Chris Kaman. A red-blooded, born-and-bred American, three generations removed from the great-grandparents who decades ago first set foot on U.S. soil at Ellis Island in the shadow of the Statue of Liberty.BEIJING -- Half a world away, Kamanhaus is divided.

KINGSTON, Aug 15 (Reuters) - Jamaicans are split down the middle over which of their world-class sprinters stands the best chance of winning the men's 100 metres at the Olympic Games in Beijing.
Usain Bolt, whose world record time of 9.72 seconds in New York on May 31 shocked the world, and former record holder Asafa Powell eased through their first-round heats on Friday. "I know that it will be Bolt all the way, in fact, I believe that he will take the sprint double as there are few who should beat him in the 200 metres," said Catherine Jones, a housewife from Bolt's home parish of Trelawny in the northwest. "Asafa all the way, man," countered Marlon Green, a welder from St. Catherine, the home parish of Powell. "The way that Asafa has been running in the last month makes me believe that he cannot be beaten over the distance," Green said.
Hometown sentiments are natural but although the rivalry is fierce, both sides have moved to underline the great friendship the two athletes share.
"We are good friends and we respect each other," Powell said last month.

It seems as if the Chinese authorities have learned to be more restrained in their apprehension of foreign protesters. Domestic protesters are still facing harsh punishments. Even those only applying to use one of the Olympic protest zones have been punished. Note that none of the designated protest zones have been used, which require a five day notification to police in advance. It seems as if the Chinese authorities have learned to be more restrained in their... more

Well, why aren't we surprised? Good intentions aside, did we not expect something like this?
According to the British publication The Telegraph, Chinese Olympic Organizers faked the spectacular opening fireworks show for viewers around the world.
According to the story, Beijing used computer graphics, recorded previous to the beginning of the Olympics to fake the show.
I, like many others, watched in awe, as many beautiful fireworks were seemingly set off in the Beijing Olympic Stadium. According to said publication, it was done for safety purposes, but all the same, it would have been a lot better if it were real.
