CNN is reporting that its chief medical correspondent Sanjay Gupta today withdrew from consideration as the nation's surgeon general. The network said that its go-to health guy declined to comment.
News outlets reported in January that President Obama had offered Gupta, 39, a practicing neurosurgeon, the top health slot after a face-to-face in November.
The correspondent, who is known for reporting on public health crises from around the world, also had some political cred: he served as a White House fellow in 1997 and as a special adviser to then- first lady Hillary Clinton.
Last we checked, Gupta was reportedly weighing whether he could afford (or wanted) to trade in his lucrative TV and medical gigs for a government job -- and move his pregnant wife and two kids from his base in Atlanta to Washington, D.C.
Meanwhile, Obama is reportedly on the verge of naming someone to head to the embattled Food and Drug Administration, which is under fire for failing to protect the nation's food supply in the wake of a widespread salmonella outbreak. Among those reported to be in the running: Joshua Sharfstein -- also 39 -- and Margaret Hamburg, 54, who are also both physicians.CNN is reporting that its chief medical correspondent Sanjay Gupta today withdrew from... more

This pub always has to bitch about something...
President Barack Obama doesn’t go anywhere without his TelePrompter.
The textbook-sized panes of glass holding the president’s prepared remarks follow him wherever he speaks.
Resting on top of a tall, narrow pole, they flank his podium during speeches in the White House’s stately parlors. They stood next to him on the floor of a manufacturing plant in Indiana as he pitched his economic stimulus plan. They traveled to the Department of Transportation this week and were in the Capitol Rotunda last month when he paid tribute to Abraham Lincoln in six-minute prepared remarks. This pub always has to bitch about something...

Cell phones belonging to hospital staff were found to be tainted with bacteria -- including the drug-resistant MRSA superbug -- and may be a source of hospital-acquired infections, according to study released Friday.
Researchers from the Ondokuz Mayis University in Turkey led by Fatma Ulger tested the phones and dominant hands of 200 doctors and nurses working in hospital operating rooms and intensive care units.
Ninety-five percent of the mobile phones were contaminated with at least one type of bacteria, with the potential to cause illness ranging from minor skin irritations to deadly disease.
Nearly 35 percent carried two types of bacteria, and more than 11 percent carried three or more different species of bugs, the study found.Cell phones belonging to hospital staff were found to be tainted with bacteria --... more

(CNN) -- Dr. Sanjay Gupta, CNN's chief medical correspondent, has withdrawn his name from consideration as surgeon general of the United States, an administration official said Thursday.
"Sanjay Gupta was under serious consideration for the job of surgeon general," the official said in an e-mail. "He has removed himself from consideration to focus more on his medical career and his family. We know he will continue to serve and educate the public through his work with media and in the medical arena."
Sources said in January that Gupta met then-President-elect Obama in Chicago, Illinois, in November to discuss the post. Gupta has declined comment.(CNN) -- Dr. Sanjay Gupta, CNN's chief medical correspondent, has withdrawn his... more

CNN's medical "expert" Dr. Sanjay Gupta is the man Obama wants for Surgeon General. This is a sick choice for the post given that Gupta got many key facts wrong in a CNN "Fact Check" report he did on Moore's pro-universal healthcare film Sicko. Gupta also displayed thinly veiled contempt for the state run healthcare systems in other countries –– not a good sign given that Obama is hoping to install a similar system here in the U.S. during his presidency. Moore didn't let Gupta get away with his shoddy treatment, curing the situation by calling Gupta on his lies and misinformation in a detailed post on his website and in a follow-up debate hosted by Larry King.
Really Obama – Gupta? Can't you find someone more qualified than a TV spin doctor to heal America?CNN's medical "expert" Dr. Sanjay Gupta is the man Obama wants for... more

Maybe it's because I was born a couple of months after Woodstock and wasn't around when marijuana was as common as iPods are today, but I'm constantly amazed that after all these years--and all the wars on drugs and all the public-service announcements--nearly 15 million Americans still use marijuana at least once a month. California and 10 other states have already decriminalized marijuana for medical use. Now two of those states--Colorado and Nevada--are considering ballot initiatives that would legalize up to an ounce of pot for personal use by people 21 and older, whether or not there is a medical need.
This article contains soooo much misinformation re: Cannabis that it is almost hard to believe that it was written by an actual Physician...and potential Surgeon General.Maybe it's because I was born a couple of months after Woodstock and wasn't... more
