If we speak about people who shaped informatics / software engineering, we cannot forget "the father of information age", Shannon, who died nearly exactly 10 years ago, on february 24th, 2001. One of his writing was claimed the "Magna Charta of the Information Age" - and probably this essay shaped our present much more than the now 10 years old other "Magna Charta". His master's thesis from MIT is the most influental master's theses ever written, as of today: it's about the application of boolean algebra to digital circuits, so, in short: he invented digital logic.... http://www.makeahistory.com/index.php/your-details/36479-the-ultimate-machine-by-claude-elwood-shannon-qthe-father-of-information-ageqIf we speak about people who shaped informatics / software engineering, we cannot... more

In a stream of RSS and Twitter feeds, news captions, headlines, water-cooler-talk and the occasional lunch crunch and nightly news reports, it's hard to visualize a snapshot of what's really going on in the world and how seemingly random data may or may not fit together with malicious attacks and how they transform. Take a look at this attempt to visually put some random events together. http://cyy.be/b3Qb07In a stream of RSS and Twitter feeds, news captions, headlines, water-cooler-talk and... more

It is a surreal experience when someone's online presence lives on after his or her death. Since one of my fb friends just died suddenly, and her wall has turned into an impromptu memorial, this hits home.
With the popularity of social networking and online gaming comes a new post-mortem need that entrepreneurs are ready to fill for a price. It is a surreal experience when someone's online presence lives on after his or... more

"The Design Incubation Centre has hatched a concept that would probably make pocket dictionaries a thing of the past. That means, next time you come across an unfamiliar word, you wouldn’t flip pages of a thesaurus or search Google for it. Scrolling your fingers through the word or a phrase in the book will speak its meaning or related information in your ear. The name “Touch-Hear” itself throws light on the modus operandi of the technological concept.
The image depicts water-drop-like sensors on the fingertips and the corresponding white vocal device positioned on the ear. It’s too nifty and small to be spotted by the naked eye. Technology seems to have picked up challenges from the sci-fi world and churned out stuff, the idea of which would have otherwise seemed bizarre..."

Americans today spend almost as much on bandwidth — the capacity to move information — as we do on energy. A family of four likely spends several hundred dollars a month on cellphones, cable television and Internet connections, which is about what we spend on gas and heating oil.
Just as the industrial revolution depended on oil and other energy sources, the information revolution is fueled by bandwidth. If we aren’t careful, we’re going to repeat the history of the oil industry by creating a bandwidth cartel.
Like energy, bandwidth is an essential economic input. You can’t run an engine without gas, or a cellphone without bandwidth. Both are also resources controlled by a tight group of producers, whether oil companies and Middle Eastern nations or communications companies like AT&T, Comcast and Vodafone. That’s why, as with energy, we need to develop alternative sources of bandwidth.

The article goes on to discuss how we can take back the airwaves and create our own bandwidth sources, similar to putting solar panels up to create our own energy.
Isn't Google going to provide the internet to everyone in the world for free one day, solidifying their hold in world domination?Americans today spend almost as much on bandwidth — the capacity to move... more
