Remember earlier in the week how we mentioned that the Energy Star program would be getting an overhaul? Now it comes out apparently the reason as to why – the U.S. Government Accountability Office (GAO) today released the findings of an investigation it did into Energy Star. The results? Quite ugly indeed.
The GAO determined, in a nutshell, that the Energy Star program certification process is vulnerable to fraud and abuse. The investigation was prompted by concerns over false energy efficient products being hawked to consumers. The GAO managed to, through the self certification program, obtain “Energy Star certifications for 15 bogus products, including a gas-powered alarm clock.” Two bogus products were rejected and three apparently did not receive a response. Additionally, managed to obtain Energy Star partnership status for bogus companies.
Perhaps most disturbing of all this is the fact that the GAO found that “ for our bogus products, certification controls were ineffective primarily because Energy Star does not verify energy-savings data reported by manufacturers.” The GAO, in meeting with officials responsible for the Energy Star program, found that these individuals “agreed that the program is currently based on self-certifications by manufacturers. However, officials stated there are after-market tests and self-policing that ensure standards are maintained.” The DOE and EPA gained support from the GAO in its previously mentioned plans to enhance testing prior to certification.

Starting in June of this year, data center operators can apply for Energy Star status. The new rating system will score data centers based on PUE, or power unit efficiency, on a scale of 1 - 100.
The operators will use an online tool that allows them to enter information on energy use and operations to calculate their PUE. The PUE determines efficiency based on the total power used by the data center, divided by the amount that reaches the IT equipment, not the cooling systems or inefficient power supplies.Starting in June of this year, data center operators can apply for Energy Star status.... more

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency today reaches a milestone for the Energy Star program by passing the 1 millionth Energy Star qualified home mark.
With more than 15,000 partners in sectors all across the economy, Energy Star has been enormously successful at saving consumers money by reducing the energy usage of products used in the home and office everyday.
Since the program began labeling new homes in 1995, Americans have saved $1.2 billion on their energy bills, and reduced greenhouse gas emissions by 22 billion pounds. This year alone, families living in Energy Star qualified homes will save more than $270 million on their utility bills, while avoiding greenhouse gas emissions equivalent to those from about 370,000 vehicles.

Just like your old car, your old appliance is worth an additional bonus check from the government if you relinquish it during the cash for appliance bonanza!
There will be anywhere from 50 up to 200 dollars given to you for your old appliance when you purchase a new one that has the EPA’s issued Energy Star sticker. The sticker was developed by the EPA to indicate an appliance has met the new standards for energy savings. Which means savings for you as well in your home energy bill. In addition to saving us all money, global warming caused by emissions from less efficient appliances is hoped to be greatly reduced. The larger the scale of participants, yes, this means you, the greater the benefit to the earth.
If you’re confident in your old appliance, and aren’t sure you need a new appliance, one thing to consider is that if that appliance is fifteen years old or older the EPA recommends replacing it. Other tips for getting more savings and less impact on the environment out of an appliance include choosing a refrigerator with a top freezer instead of the side by side model. Also, choosing a washing machine that is front loading, versus top loading, is found to be more energy efficient as well.
Each state is allocated funds and has up to February 17, 2012 to apply the incentive. Check out your state and local government web-sites for when the rebate will be in effect for your state. Your local appliance dealer should have this information as well. It is still not indicated whether or not rebates can be applied retroactively, so stay on the look out and you might end up with extra Holiday spending money.

A factory-built home that creators say is a model for being affordable and green will be on display by appointment in Wailuku beginning Monday.
Francesca Carey, president of FABMAC Homes, Affordable Housing Solutions, said the model home exceeds state and county building code requirements and has an Energy Star designation, indicating it is energy efficient.
"We see FABMAC Homes as one more tool in the effort to have quality-built, durable, energy-efficient affordable housing for Maui's local families," Carey said. "It is not designed to meet the needs of the entire housing market, but we see it as a real option for many who want a home they can afford to buy and that has been built to be energy efficient so that it is also affordable to keep."

Scientists have reported recently that the world is heating up even faster than predicted only a few years ago, and that the consequences could be severe if we don't keep reducing emissions of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases that are trapping heat in our atmosphere. But what can we do about it as individuals? And as emissions from China, India, and other developing nations skyrocket, will our efforts really make any difference?Scientists have reported recently that the world is heating up even faster than... more
