A motley group of volunteers takes part in the process of turning pigs into sausages, from field to fork. Farmers illustrate the differences between how pigs are raised in massive, industrial pork processing centers versus local farms, including the need for castration. Some small farms let pigs mature and live full lives, but testosterone in pubescent pigs taints the taste of the meat. To prevent this, the pigs must be castrated after birth, and the process is gruesome.
Ever wonder where your food comes from? In each episode of "Kill It, Cook It, Eat It," a diverse group of participants is challenged to procure their main course the old-fashioned way: by hunting and killing their chosen prey, butchering it in the slaughterhouse, helping to prepare it in the kitchen, and ultimately sampling it at the dinner table. Some may enjoy the process while others recoil, but for each diner it's an intense journey that just may change their perspectives -- and appetites -- forever.

A primary school is bringing home the bacon after rearing pigs in a pets' corner and then turning them into sausages to sell to parents for £3.25 a packet.
Children at the school help with the feeding, cuddle the pigs and even give them names, but when one parent asked where the missing pigs were, the school answered: "The kids ate them last week."
One grandmother said: "I was shocked when I was told I would be able to buy some of their sausages and that their pets would be coming back as bangers."
The headmaster of the Leicestershire primary school called the scheme a "huge success."
The school is on its third batch of pigs and has brought in three more for rearing.
This story reminded me of when I was in 4-H and showed livestock. At the end of every county fair I had to load my 4-H calf on the truck to go to the packing plant. The first year I did it I was 10 years old and I cried and cried and cried as poor Pumpkin looked at me with those big, sad eyes and walked the plank to hamburger heaven. Sniff, sniff.A primary school is bringing home the bacon after rearing pigs in a pets' corner... more

They drink too much and they're too fat to fight, that's the damning conclusion of German parliamentary reports into the country's 3,500 troops stationed in Afghanistan.
While British and U.S. troops in the country face a strict ban on alcohol, their German comrades are allowed two pints a day.
The stunning statistics reveal that in 2007 German forces in northern Afghanistan drank 1.7million pints of beer and 90,000 bottles of wine.
The troops also downed 896,000 pints of beer in the first six months of this year, the Times reported.
The statistics only add to the embarrassment of the country's federal army, Bundeswehr, after a report earlier this year found troops to be too fat, smoked too much and didn't exercise enough.
It showed they lived on beer and sausages while shunning fruit and vegetables.
The parliamentary report claimed that some 40 per cent of all German army personnel are overweight - a higher percentage than in the civilian population.
At the time Reinhold Robbe, the parliamentary commissioner for the armed forces, stated: 'Plainly put, the soldiers are too fat, exercise too little, and take little care of their diet.'
The Times also reported the damning allegation from a senior officer that Germany is failing in its main mission to train the Afghan police. He descibed the efforts as 'a miserable failure'.They drink too much and they're too fat to fight, that's the damning... more

"A pint of lager = 2.3 units = 170 calories = a sausage roll."
If this was printed on your beer or wine bottle, would you drink less or stop completely? Such warning labels could soon be reality if a proposal by the Government's Advisory Council on the Misuse of Drugs is put into action. Experts say information about the dangers of drinking aren't doing much to keep us from being so boozy, but knowing how FATTENING alcohol is will have a greater impact. (Clearly, this initiative is targeted more at women and image-conscious young people).
Calorie content warning labels don't sit too well with the drinks industry though. And they made a good point that instead it might just push people to skip meals... that ever-so-ridiculous justification mechanism we use: I could either eat a sausage roll or have a pint.
Do you think this is a good idea? I think simply putting the calories on the bottles is a good idea, but making a comparison will lead to more people drinking on an empty stomach."A pint of lager = 2.3 units = 170 calories = a sausage roll."

A BURGLAR who broke into the home of two sleeping men rubbed spices over the body of one and hit the other with 20cm sausage.
In what police in the US city of Fresno called one of the most bizarre cases they had come across, the burglar threw away the assault weapon as he fled and a dog ate it, the Fresno Bee newspaper reported.
Fresno County police officer Lieutenant Ian Burrimond said the suspect was found hiding in a field a few minutes later.
Deputies had no problem linking the suspect to the crime, he told the paper.
"It seems the guy ran out of the house wearing only a T-shirt, boxer shorts and socks, leaving behind his wallet with his ID," Lt Burrimond said.
The victims, both farmworkers, told police they were woken on Saturday morning by a stranger applying spices to one of them and striking the other with a sausage.
The spices and the sausage were from the victims' kitchen, Lt Burrimond said.
After their attacker fled, the men discovered their home had been ransacked and cash stolen.
Lt Burrimond said the money was recovered but the sausage used in the attack was thrown away by the suspect and eaten by a dog.
"That's right, the dog ate the weapon," Lt Burrimond said.

Authorities say they've arrested a man who broke into the home of two California farmworkers, stole money, rubbed one with spices and whacked the other with a sausage before fleeing.
Fresno County sheriff's Lt. Ian Burrimond says 22-year-old Antonio Vasquez was found hiding in a field wearing only a T-shirt, boxers and socks after the Saturday morning attack.
He says deputies arrested Vasquez after finding a wallet containing his ID in the ransacked house.
The farmworkers told deputies the suspect woke them Saturday morning by rubbing spices on one of them and smacking the other with an 8-inch sausage.
Burrimond says money allegedly stolen was recovered. Authorities say they've arrested a man who broke into the home of two California... more
