SNBC's Rachel Maddow caught Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC) on Tuesday seemingly arguing that his state's 31 percent African-American population puts him at a disadvantage -- and that it's a good reason not to support healthcare reform.

The Republican Party of Charleston County, S.C. on Monday voted to censure Sen. Lindsey Graham over his support for climate legislation and his willingness to work across party lines on the issue.
The Republican has often worked with Democrats in Congress, but Charleston County Chairwoman Lin Bennett says his work on climate legislation is the last straw.
The party resolution passed Monday says Graham has weakened the Republican brand. Bennett expects a similar resolution to be introduced at the state GOP convention next year.
Bennett called his views "out of step with the beliefs of Republican voters."
Graham hasn't been able to catch a break back home lately. The American Energy Alliance, a shadowy group backed by dirty energy interests, has spent $300,000 on radio ads in the state lambasting Graham for supporting "a national energy tax called cap-and-trade."

Senator Lindsay Graham (R-SC) has announced that he is willing to support some form of climate change legislation, but only if the current Kerry-Boxer bill is overhauled to look a lot more like a traditional Republican program of energy independence.
"There will be no climate change bill with my vote unless you have offshore oil drilling," Graham told Fox News on Thursday. "I won't vote for any climate change bill that doesn't allow a dramatic increase in nuclear power. I'm not going to vote for any climate change bill that doesn't allow us to use our coal deposits."
Graham said he doesn't see any chance of current proposals getting past a filibuster in the Senate because "there's nowhere near 60 votes for a cap-and-trade system that puts a lot of businesses out of business."
"Environmental policy has to be good business policy," Graham insisted. "What would happen in this country if you build a hundred nuclear power plants in the next thirty years? It would create millions of jobs. And we need to use the coal that God has given us."
"If we can do that," conceded Graham, "I'm also willing to help the planet be a cleaner, safer place by controlling carbon in a way that doesn't put us in the dark or out of business. ... There's a lot of money to be made from green technology ... but we need also to explore for fossil fuels that we're going to need for generations until we get to a carbon-free economy. So I'm trying to combine concepts. ... I'm trying to create a good business opportunity out of environmental policy."

FINALLY! a Republican leader denounces Glenn Beck. For that, I applaud you Senator Graham. Thank you for FINALLY offering a voice of reason from your party.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Sen. Lindsey Graham, (R-S.C.) offered unusually blunt assessments of the fringe elements of his party and conservative media on Thursday, calling the popular and bombastic Fox News host Glenn Beck a "cynic" whose show was antithetical to American values.
"Only in America can you make that much money crying," Graham said of Beck. "Glenn Beck is not aligned with any party. He is aligned with cynicism and there has always been a market for cynics. But we became a great nation not because we are a nation of cynics. We became a great nation because we are a nation of believers."
Appearing before a crowd of Washington's elite power players and opinion-makers, Graham spoke largely without filter, offering acidic takes on subject well beyond Beck. The Senator called the birther community that questions the president's U.S. citizenship "crazy" and implored them to "knock this crap off" so the country could get on to more important matters.
"I'm here to tell you that those who think the president was not born in Hawaii are crazy," said Graham, who went on to dispel another myth: that Obama is a closet Muslim.FINALLY! a Republican leader denounces Glenn Beck. For that, I applaud you Senator... more
On last night's Rachel Maddow Show, Maddow took viewers through what she called a "magic map trick," in which she crunched the numbers on a handful of health-care statistics, such as teenage pregnancy rates, infant birth weight, premature births and infant mortality.
Her findings? At the tail end of all of these quality-of-life measures are various Southern states. And the worst among them? Mississippi and South Carolina! And hey, speaking of South Carolina, isn't that where some of America's Next Top Health Care Reform Obstructionists come from? Why, yes!On last night's Rachel Maddow Show, Maddow took viewers through what she called a... more
WASHINGTON (AP) - Republican Sen. Lindsey Graham says he’ll vote for Supreme Court nominee Sonia Sotomayor breaking with his party’s conservative leaders. The South Carolinian had hinted during Sotomayor’s confirmation hearings that he might back President Barack Obama’s first high court nominee.
His announcement brings the total number of Republicans publicly backing her to five. Graham is generally conservative but has been known to flash a
maverick streak similar to his mentor, Sen. John McCain of Arizona.
The other Republicans who’ve said they’ll vote for Sotomayor, who would be the first Hispanic justice, are all moderates. The 55-year-old appeals court judge is expected to win confirmation in early August.AP
Russia has decided not to withdraw from Georgia after all; its foreign minister says to “forget about any talk about Georgia’s territorial integrity,” and NATO powers are scrambling to figure out how to end the war.
But don’t worry, because John McCain has a plan: Joe Lieberman and Lindsey Graham are on their way.
McCain and Barack Obama have been waging a low-level battle of their own ever since Russian troops moved into the neighboring former Soviet republic on Aug. 8. While Obama initially called for restraint on both sides, before gradually ratcheting up demands that Russia back off, McCain immediately blasted the Russians for the invasion. When it became clear that McCain was taking a harder line than the White House was, Obama’s aides started pushing the idea that McCain’s ties to lobbyists for Georgia were the reason.
What, exactly, McCain hopes to accomplish by packing his two closest Senate pals off to a war zone isn’t entirely clear. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice is also on her way to Tbilisi, with the ability to negotiate on behalf of the U.S. government (instead of just the McCain campaign). Graham and Lieberman are, like McCain, members of the Senate Armed Services Committee; they frequently accompany him on trips to the Middle East and joined him on a mission to Colombia and Mexico earlier this summer.
But considering that one of the main lines of attack Republicans are pushing against Obama these days is that he’s presumptuously declared himself president before Election Day, it’s a little curious that the GOP nominee thinks sending campaign surrogates to visit the war is a good idea.
