Protesters at the “Democracy Village” camp opposite the Houses of Parliament shouted antiwar slogans as Queen Elizabeth’s made her way to address the Members of Parliament on Tuesday. London, UK. 25 May 2010
Earlier police searched the camp ahead of the State Opening of Parliament. Anti-war campaigner Brian Haw, who has been living on the green since 2001, and another protester Barbara Tucker were charged with obstructing police following their arrest during the search.
The camp, a collection of tents and colorful banners dubbed Democracy Village, sprang up on the 1st of May and anti-war demonstrators, climate change activists, and anti capitalist protesters have been living there every since.
During the peaceful protest on Tuesday, participants played music and held banners calling for changes to Britain’s electoral system.
A camper know as Tracey, dressed up as a cabaret queen told onlookers “I’m the new Queen. Liz can ride her bike. I’ve got her a bike over there.”
One of the protesters, prepared a banner reading: “We respect the soldiers but we do not support the war”.
He was keen to emphasize the camps’ non-violent protest message, “People are naive about modern day war – it’s portrayed as clean but actually it has got dirtier. The weapons are more lethal and barbaric – wiping out human lives with the touch of a button”.
He went on to say that he is “not overly fussed about the theatrics” of other protesters – which today included an alternative, somewhat alcohol fueled, Queen’s speech from the Square’s Tracey.
Tracey and her husband Tarquin are “the resident drunks” says Gareth, a land activist from Kew Bridge eco-village.
Gareth said the couple, alongside some activists such as the Election Meltdown group, are part of a minority who distract the public from the cause of the majority.
Some of the Democratic Village were annoyed when activists from the Election Meltdown group sent out a press release regarding their alternative speech, without consulting anyone.
Appealing against the demonstrators removal from the Square, Gareth said the protest was respectful and non-violent, adding: “It’s not exactly an easy ride – we’re living on a traffic island with the most horrific pollution”.
Mayor of London Boris Johnson is seeking legal action to remove the demonstrators camping in Parliament Square.Protesters at the “Democracy Village” camp opposite the Houses of... more

The all-night Climate Emergency Vigil started on the night of Saturday May 15th, just over a week after the election, with a Candlelit Procession down Whitehall from St Martin-in-the-Fields church, Trafalgar Square.
At 12.00 midnight the candle-bearing masses streamed off past the great pillared facade of St Martin's behind the campaign's 7 foot square globe-in-a-greenhouse, the CCC banner and another banner held by a long row of vigil-goers spelling out "Climate Emergency". With candle-lights bobbing and flags waving the Procession made its way down Whitehall, past Downing Street with newly re-occupied No. 10 to finish at 'Old Palace Yard' just opposite the Houses of Parliament. Here the crowd assembled around the statue of George V to be rewarded by a surprise appearance and inspiring speech from John McDonnell MP (whose constituency includes the village that had been threatened by the proposed 3rd Heathrow runway).

Back in August, the UK government administration (collectively known as Whitehall) was criticized by Members of Parliament for failing to meet their own carbon emission targets. On September 15, UK Cabinet Office minister Angela Smith claimed in a BBC article that Whitehall had “saved enough carbon dioxide to fill almost 2,500 Olympic-sized swimming pools.”
2,500 Olympic-sized swimming pools sounds like a lot. Swimming pools are big, after all, and 2,500 of them would hold lots of water. But when I dug a little further, I found that Whitehall’s carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions were actually reduced by only 12,000 tonnes, a nearly negligible amount.
To put this into perspective, in 2006, the Energy Information Administration estimated that the total emissions for the United Kingdom was 585.71 million metric tons (aka tonnes). 12,000 tonnes is only 2 thousandths of one percent of the UK’s total emissions three years ago.
So how did we get from 12,000 tonnes to “2,500 Olympic-sized swimming pools?” It’s called the ideal gas equation.Back in August, the UK government administration (collectively known as Whitehall) was... more

"Whitehall officials will train pro-West Islamic groups to manipulate their Google search ranking in an attempt to drown out extremist voices online, The Register has learned.
The policy is being developed despite recent warnings from a group of international experts on radicalisation that such strategies are likely to be "largely ineffectual".
The Office of Security and Counter-Terrorism (OSCT), a 200-strong Home Office unit created 18 months ago, has said in meetings it wants to "flood the internet" with "positive" interpretations of Islam. It plans to train government-approved groups in search engine optimisation techniques, which it's hoped will boost their profile online and battle radicalisation.
Organisations such as Quilliam, which describes itself as "the world's first counter-extremism think tank" and is jointly led by former radical Ed Husain, have been identified as potential beneficiaries of the work. A spokesman for the group declined to comment.
Officials are currently understood to be in the early stages of the programme.""Whitehall officials will train pro-West Islamic groups to manipulate their... more
