It sounds like a movie script, but it's not....
Dr. Prasher's work in gene research was cut short when his funding by the American Cancer Society ran out.
He could have kept his work to himself. Instead, he mailed a couple of test tubes to Roger Tsien at the University of California and Martin Chalfie at Columbia University.
"It was more important to me to hand over the tool to other scientists with the funding than to have individual glory," Prasher told London's Daily Mail.
His initial work led to the research that allowed Chalfie and Tsien to win the Nobel prize for chemistry. They'll share $1.5 million.

South African's Robben Island museum will be closed while authorities cull a colony of rabbits that has invaded the site where Nelson Mandela was jailed.
Authorities said on Tuesday the museum, popular with tourists wanting to see the former president's cell, would be temporarily closed while the rabbits were killed to protect plant life and historical buildings at the World Heritage site.
"The current population is so large that it threatens to permanently damage the island's sensitive vegetation, and poses a serious threat to other fauna species," Seelan Naidoo, the museum's acting chief executive said in a statement.

The global credit crisis has found echoes in an unlikely quarter, India's Bollywood, known more for its love of lavish musicals and racy thrillers.
The crisis, that has inspired "credit crunch" chocolate bars and "meltdown" parties in the West, is reflected in a new Hindi film "EMI," or Equated Monthly Installments, by debutant writer-director Saurabh Kabra. It is set for release later this month.

Advertisers have known this all along, but now it is scientifically proven: men who are exposed to naked women stop paying attention to prices.
According to a report Tuesday by Flemish broadcaster VRT, a study by the University of Leuven found an inverse relationship between testosterone levels and price awareness among males.
The “naked women” effect is particularly strong among machos, the study found.
“Machos usually tend to be tough negotiators, but advertisements featuring naked women turn them into gullible sheep,” said Siegfried Dewitte, a professor of economics who carried out the study.
The study also found a similar effect on women exposed to scantily-clad men. However, it also found that women generally tend to be more sensitive to the touch, rather than to such visual stimuli.Advertisers have known this all along, but now it is scientifically proven: men who... more

The fish swims around for hours with his white belly pointing upwards and his eyes staring down.
Owner Richard Gordon took over ownership of the Japanese coldwater fish six years ago from his grandson Christopher.
After having him a year, the 63-year-old was bemused to find him floating on his back in his 12 inch wide glass tank.
The marine electrician said: "The first time I saw him I thought he was dead and I was going to flush him away.
"But I flicked the glass and he started swimming again.
"Strangely, when I put food in he'll always swim up to it the right way round.
"He then swims back down again and rolls over and floats upside down once more.
"At first I was worried but he seems happy enough and is able to swim around just fine."
Mr Gordon named his goldfish Horatio after Lord Nelson because he married his wife Diane, 62, on Trafalgar Day.
He believes there may be some method in nine year old Horatio's madness.
The former Royal Navy submariner added: "He always seems to go to the same spot just below the filtration system where there's the most oxygen in the water and floats there.
"It would make sense for him to be there but it could be because he's a bit lazy or maybe he has just got Australian roots and can't tell which way up he's supposed to be." The fish swims around for hours with his white belly pointing upwards and his eyes... more

In 1927, legendary horror writer H.P. Lovecraft wrote a tale of evil in Brooklyn called "The Horror at Red Hook." It was inspired by his apartment, the soul of which he once described as being "something unwholesome, something furtive, something vast lying subterraneanly in obnoxious slumber."
Nellie Kurtzman knows how he feels.
Kurtzman now lives in that apartment - actually located on Clinton Street in Brooklyn Heights, not Red Hook - and says that the spirit of the maniacal visionary is both pervasive and not entirely welcome.
"I feel like H.P. Lovecraft is associated with creepiness," says Kurtzman, a children's book marketer. "Everything I know about him is fairly creepy, so every indication he's around is creepy."
These indications began, she says, even before she and a roommate moved in this past April.
"A friend of mine lives on the top floor of this building," she explains, "and I remember her saying, 'There's this huge apartment in our building where the people seem to have disappeared.' "
The ground-floor two-bedroom apartment had been left unlocked by the tenants who left mysteriously, without notice. Kurtzman and several friends checked it out, and when one of them, a Lovecraft fanatic, figured out it had been the writer's apartment, they brought in a Ouija board and held a midnight seance.
"My friend Martin had this friend Jeff, who died about two years ago," says Kurtzman, who was not at the seance but heard about it afterward.
"Before he died, Martin had left his dog under Jeff's care. He came back late, and Jeff was irritated. Well, Jeff died a few weeks later. So they have this seance, and Martin is like, 'Is anyone here? Are you upset about anything?' and the Ouija board spelled out 'Lucy' - the name of Martin's dog."
Another of the seance participants, the Lovecraft fan, had been in the apartment the previous evening and quietly took a brick as a souvenir. When his turn on the board arrived, it spelled out "brick." In 1927, legendary horror writer H.P. Lovecraft wrote a tale of evil in Brooklyn... more

Two workers were suspended after being caught having sex at a partly frosted window, unaware that a crowd was watching them from below.
The naked pair was the staff of a company called Unity Partnership, contracted by Oldham Metropolitan Borough Council to improve public services.
They could not hear the cheering from the group of passing workers, taxi drivers, and at least two police community support officers, but continued undeterred.
They stopped only when PCSOs took the decision to alert the pair’s managers.
It is believed that the pair has been given a verbal reprimand by the officer.
Lee Robinson, managing director of Unity Partnership, said he was “aware of an incident involving two of our employees”.
“While the details of the incident are still emerging, we want to make it clear that Unity takes this matter very seriously,” Telegraph quoted him, as saying. Two workers were suspended after being caught having sex at a partly frosted window,... more

The Sydney Olympics ran out. Athens doubled the number. So organisers of the Beijing Games are hoping 100,000 condoms will satisfy the needs of Olympic athletes.
While sex is not an Olympic sport it is expected to be an activity in the Beijing village housing 10,500 athletes, all of whom are in great shape and with plenty of free time on their hands once knocked out of the Games.
Athletes have received free condoms at every Olympics since Barcelona in 1992 to help raise awareness of AIDS, and Beijing is no exception.
“There are many young, strong, single people in the athletes’ village and, like everywhere, some will fall in love or other things so we need to make condoms available,” Ole Hansen, spokesman for UNAIDS China, told Reuters.
“A lot of these young people are not married or in relationships so we want to make sure they have the information and tools to protect themselves if they have sexual encounters.”
The UNAIDS, the Beijing organising committee BOCOG and International Olympics Committee are providing 100,000 condoms as part of a campaign on HIV prevention and anti-discrimination.
At the Sydney Games in 2000 athletes quickly exhausted a supply of 70,000 and another 20,000 had to be brought in. The Foundation for AIDS Research, amfAR, said 100,000 were distributed at the Salt Lake City Winter Olympics in 2002 after a plan to distribute 250,000 condoms met protests by religious groups and was scaled back.
At Athens in 2004 about 1,30,000 condoms were distributed. Hansen said the number available at Beijing was based on previous Games’ experience and in keeping with previous Olympics would be available at medical centres at athletes’ centres in Beijing, Qingdao and Hong Kong rather than put in rooms.
“We have people here from all religions and cultural backgrounds, some of whom may feel uncomfortable or offended with condoms in their room,” he said. The Sydney Olympics ran out. Athens doubled the number. So organisers of the Beijing... more

The hunt for the elusive creature - said to be 10ft tall, part man, part ape and otherwise known as the Abominable Snowman - has frustrated scientists for decades.
Now tests at Oxford Brookes University on hairs said to be from a Yeti in India have failed to link the strands with any known species.
Ape expert Ian Redmond, who is leading the research, said: "The hairs are the most positive evidence yet that a Yeti might possibly exist.
"It may be that the region this animal is inhabiting is remote enough for it to remain undiscovered so far."
The two hairs - 33mm and 44mm long - were found in a jungle in the mountains of north-east India five years ago.
A forester claimed to seen a Yeti, known locally as mande barung or "forest man", two days in a row breaking branches off trees and eating their sap.
The Yeti was dubbed the Abominable Snowman in 1921 after an Everest expedition found large footprints at 21,000ft.
Climber Sir Edmund Hillary also found large footprints on Everest in 1953.
And in December last year, an American TV presenter reported 33cm-long footprints in the Everest region of Nepal.
The scientists are using high-powered microscopes to analyse the samples.
The hairs will then be sent to labs in Oxford and Cardiff for DNA testing.
If DNA analysis cannot identify the creature, it should be able to establish what it is related to.
The scientific community has largely dismissed the possible existence of Yeti but it remains one of the most famous creatures of cryptozoology, the study of unconfirmed animals. The hunt for the elusive creature - said to be 10ft tall, part man, part ape and... more
