It fizzes. It quenches. And it could also contain fecal bacteria.
Nearly half of the 90 beverages from soda fountain machines in one area in Virginia tested positive for coliform bacteria -- which could indicate possible fecal contamination, according to a study published in the January issue of International Journal of Food Microbiology.
Researchers also detected antibiotic-resistant microbes and E.coli in the soda samples.

A new food documentary, InGREEDients was among the films previewed by attendees of Wise Traditions 2009 in Chicago last month. I got a chance to interview one of the producers, David Burton, and here is the scoop.
Producer of the film David Burton is a professional registered nurse. Film making is his hobby, he always loves shooting family videos, which led to making backyard films at his home in Connecticut. Local businesses began to hire him and his friends to make short film documentaries for their marketing and promotion campaigns. At this point, he realized, he could make a go of a film making career.
A mutual friend introduced him to J. Wenzel on a hiking trip on the Appalachian Trail. A successful sales management professional, J. dreamed of being a film producer someday. When he heard of David’s success as a self taught filmmaker, he realized that even without formal training, he too, could make movies.
David and his wife moved to FL, yet he and J. were still batting around ideas of what sort of film they could do together. David had noticed on their hiking adventure, that J. seemed to be avoiding hydrogenated oils. On their trip J. had complained of having brought a trailmix bar that had hydrogenated oil in it. He refused to eat it. And, when J. came to visit him in Florida, they went to a restaurant and David noticed Jay was grilling a waitress about what kind of oil they used in the kitchen. David, said, “What is it with you and the hydrogenated oil?”
Then it hit him. “We should do a movie about this, you are obviously passionate about it,” David exclaimed. They left the restaurant and started researching hydrogenated oils on the internet. They found a website, dldewey .com with tons of information about the dangers of trans fats or partially hydrogenated oils.
Spurred on by what they discovered, and even though J. lived in Connecticut and David lived in Florida, they plunged headlong into the film project. David said he knew the long distance partnership would work, because he admired J.’s work ethic.
The Guys Dig Up Over a Dozen Dirty Ingredients
As they dug for more information, they started finding out about all kinds of other terrible ingredients, they became alarmed about other chemical additives such as MSG, corn syrup, aspartame, bleached wheat flour. They also unearthed a hidden form of trans fats, by doing a patent search they found out that manufacturers of mono and diglycerides, start with partially hydrogenated oil.

Bayer has admitted it has been unable to control the spread of its genetically-engineered organisms despite 'the best practices [to stop contamination]'(1). It shows that all outdoors field trials or commercial growing of GE crops must be stopped before our crops are irreversibly contaminated.

$2 million US dollar verdict against Bayer confirms company's liability for an uncontrollable technology
Greenpeace welcomes the United States federal jury ruling on 4 December 2009 that Bayer CropScience LP must pay $2 million US dollars to two Missouri farmers after their rice crop was contaminated with an experimental variety of rice that the company was testing in 2006.
This verdict confirms that the responsibility for the consequences of GE (genetic engineering) contamination rests with the company that releases GE crops.
Bayer has admitted it has been unable to control the spread of its genetically-engineered organisms despite 'the best practices [to stop contamination]'(1). It shows that all outdoors field trials or commercial growing of GE crops must be stopped before our crops are irreversibly contaminated.
A report prepared for Greenpeace International concluded that the total costs incurred throughout the world as a result of the contamination are estimated to range from $741 million to $1.285 billion US dollars.(2) The verdict indicates that Bayer is liable for what could turn out to be a large proportion of these costs, as it awards damages in the first two of more than 1,000 currently pending lawsuits. The decision must be used to support all claims for losses incurred by other US farmers whose crops have suffered from GE contamination.

Every day we get a little bit closer to an rBGH-free milk supply as more and more major retailers are responding to the growing consumer demand for healthier milk. Chipotle, Kroger, and Wal-Mart are the most recent stores to join the trend. We’re collecting 10,000 petition signatures to thank companies that have gone rBGH-free and to encourage more companies to do it in the future.
In January, Chipotle began serving only rBGH-free sour cream and cheese in its restaurants, and Kroger and Wal-Mart both announced that they will only source rBGH-free milk for their store brands. Though we might not agree with some of these companies’ other practices, their rBGH-free switch is commendable as it means a dramatic increase in the amount of artificial growth hormone-free dairy products available to consumers nationwide. Our petition will also help encourage these companies to label these products as 'rBGH-free.'
Sign the petition thanking these companies for making the switch to healthier milk and dairy products and ask your friends to do the same!
I show my support for this by boycotting dairy until all is clear.
Please sign this and PASS IT ON!Every day we get a little bit closer to an rBGH-free milk supply as more and more... more
