For most people, political junkies included, last night was their introduction to Brian Schweitzer, the Democratic Governor of the State of Montana.
Schweitzer gave a rousing 15-minute speech that had the entire crowd on it's feet by the end. Bill Clinton was even on his feet, cheering for Obama as Schweitzer led the sea of Democrats on the floor in chants of "Yes We Can" and "O-Ba-Ma!"
Part of the power of Schweitzer's speech had to do with his reasoned and intelligent approach to one of the most important and under-covered issues of the day: energy. The other moving factor, of course, was Schweitzer's charisma.
Although the 15-minutes of Montana's Governor at the 2008 Democratic National Convention were not as high profile as Barack Obama's Key Note Speech at the 2004 DNC, the feeling was much the same - A rising star in the Democratic Party surprised and wowed viewers around the country and the world.
While those of you who read The Stonecipher Report regularly you know exactly who Brian Schweitzer is, for those who don't however, I wanted to provide a post with more information on just who the Governor of Montana is. But first, in case you missed last night's speech, here it is:

While everyone is debating the pros and cons of Obama’s pick of Joe Biden for VP, a small scandal is erupting in Montana surrounding Governor Schweitzer.
The scandal won’t make the national headlines, but the issue underlying it is at the heart of Obama’s message: American politics are in dire need of change. When what is right for the American people takes a backseat to political one-upmanship, there is something very wrong.
In April, the Montana Republican State party filed a complaint against Brian Schweitzer for distributing a Public Service Announcement for Ag Week, a week of recognition and thanks for Montana ’s farmers and ranchers.
Montana law bans the use of state funds to produce PSAs featuring an officeholder who has officially declared his candidacy and the GOP alleges that Schweitzer did just that...

With the start of the Democratic National Convention less than a week away now it is crunch time for Barack Obama. He needs to make the first big decision of his General Election campaign and maybe the first big decision of his presidency, his Vice Presidential Running Mate.
The conventional wisdom is that a VP selection can't really help a candidate, but the wrong selection can hurt a candidate. George McGovern's selection of Thomas Eagleton in 1972 proved that.
2008 however, is shaping up to be a different kind of election. With a man who would be the oldest president to ever serve and a man who was, until recently, unknown outside the state of Illinois, voters may be looking at the VP selections as security blankets. And Obama needs to choose his security blanket very soon.
So who is it going to be?

Montana Governor Brian Schweitzer has been seriously considered for the Democratic ticket this November. I’ve touted this man's rising political star, his political skills and his suitability for VP in numerous articles and I’m convinced he could seal the deal for Obama.
Schweitzer is smart, funny, popular, and most importantly, he is an energy expert. Schweitzer’s deep understanding of the Middle East is due in large part to his six years spent in the region working in soil engineering and agronomy. He’s applied this practical experience to create a simple plan to help America end our dependence on foreign oil.

In the election for Vice President there is only one voter per party. For the Republicans that voter is John McCain and for the Democrats that voter is Barack Obama. Ordinarily, endorsements are not made for Vice President, but since House Speaker Nancy Pelosi seems to be endorsing the little known Chet Edwards recently, we here at The Stonecipher Report decided it would be appropriate to make our own Vice Presidential endorsement.
If you have read the site in the past it should come as no surprise that we have chosen to endorse Montana Governor Brian Schweitzer as our choice to be Barack Obama's Vice Presidential running mate

In the Red state of Montana, that is. But red for how much longer?
Barack Obama spent his Fourth of July at a parade in Butte, Montana, making good on his promise to take Montana seriously in the run-up to the November election.
This is Obama’s fourth trip to Montana since April and last month he hired a full-time director for his state campaign. The Obama campaign has already begun running informative TV ads to introduce Obama to the people of Montana and the voters are paying attention.
But can Barack turn this red state blue?
